Object View Number 30... doesn't exist?

This problem is probably so retardedly simple, but I can't figure it out. I've done it loads of times before. I'm probably tired, but now it's just getting on my nerves.

I have THIS:

SetObjectView(0,30);
AnimateObjectEx(0,1,6,0,0,0);

When the character walks over  Hotspot.

There is DEFINATELY a View 30, and DEFINATELY an Object Number 0.

Am I spelling Definitely wrong?

Anyway,

When I walk over the Hotspot, it boots me out of the game with an error message: "SetObjectView: Invalid View Number".

It is so DEFINITELY a view that it's not even funny. Also, the Loop Number is correct.

Is it Definitely, or Definately?

EDIT: It works with other view numbers...????

EDIT 2: Well, it works with all view numbers BELOW view 30, but doesn't work with a view number HIGHER than view 30....???????

Pumaman

Hmm, I remember having a similar report to this a while back, and it didn't seem to make any sense then either.

How many views do you have in total? If you create a couple of new ones, does view 30 start working?

Meowster

I created 10 new views and tried. Still not working. I also tried using view 40 and it didn't work. I used AGS v2.54 ....

... And now I made it worse, by downloading the latest version of AGS and loading my game with that, and now for some reason I can't change ANY settings with the editor. It seems to think they're changed in the editor... until I load the game, and it starts in the same place again and again, won't change the character view etc.,. It seems that I can't edit the game any longer.

AND I can't load it up in the OLD version that it worked on, because it refuses to load it as it was saved by the newer version. Ahhhh! Now I'm completely stuck. I feel dumb, ashamed and frustrated.

I'll have to wait til monday before I can even get back my backup files on the school computers. Ahhhhhh!

Why on earth won't V2.56 let me edit anything?! ???

Pumaman

How big is your game? Would you like to upload it for me to take a look at?

Meowster

I would, in fact, love that.

Do I just send the contents of the compiled folder, or do you need the other files? (Minus, obviously, AGS... I am not THAT stupid)

Pumaman

Just the  ac2game.dta, acsprset.spr and editor.dat files should do it, along with a room file that demonstrates the problem.

Meowster

URL is.....

http://www.geocities.com/parasitegames/br.zip

Now I come to think of it, I prolly should have included the midi files.... if it doesn't run, you'll need any ol midis called MUSIC14 and MUSIC3

Here's what you need to do to see BOTH problems:

First, the player start position is for testing purposes. Anyway, he's not supposed to start there. In the editor it also says to start in room 3, whereas that is room 2. The character view specified in the editor is not the same as the character view shown in the game. I can't edit anything from the game.

Press CTRL+X and go to room 21. Er, it will make sense, one day. Anyway, look at the star, and then use the stairs. Walk along that room and you'll hit the exact spot where the problem occurs.

Hang on, can you even play the game with only those files? Well, anyway...

Pumaman

I tried it and I got the error - but in the editor, there are only 29 Views, so the error message is correct. Do you see more than that?

Meowster

#8
Yup. I see 40 views. Only 29 of which work. ???

Pumaman

That is strange ... if you unzip the files you uploaded for me into a new folder, and load that game into the editor, do you still see 40 views?

Meowster

#10
Let's see...

Five minutes later

Huh, no. That's pretty weird. I only see 29. I definately copied this from the original file which insisted it had 40 views. Let's try editing this file...

I just made view 30 in that file... and it all worked absolutely perfectly. I can also edit the game in the editor as well. Which is weird, because... it's exactly the same file as the file that I can't edit with the editor with. What? ???

I'm gonna try copying over the 'old' version of this file in the original BR directory now...

30 seconds later...

Oh my dear god. Ahhh! For some reason, if it's used in conjuction with all the other files from that folder, not ONLY does the editor refuse to edit, but it INSISTS that view 30 doesn't exist. What the hell!?

Does that make any sense? Is there a mutiny in the original BR folder? Let's try moving my OLD stuff... into the NEW folder instead! I'll single out the gangleader!!!!

Somewhat later...

It seems that those files I sent you on their own work fine... but coupled with any other file, they don't. I'm still working out which file it is that doesn't like them...

Much, much, much later...

I put all the room and music files into the new folder with the 'working' files. It works fine, just dandy. Do I even NEED the other files?

Quite a bit later, in fact

It recreates all the files anyway when you save the game.... like "editor" and "backup.dta" so technically, all the same files are there, except they actually WORK. Could it have been corrupted at one stage, IE when I was saving it? It all works fine now.

I'll describe exactly what I did:

I removed those files from the original folder to send to you, but they worked fine for you. They also worked fine for me... when not in the original folder. So I made a new folder for them, and moved all the ROOM and MUSIC files into the new folder. I loaded it on AGS, and all the problems were solved. It now can count higher than 29, and allows me to edit. On saving the game, it recreated the files "editor" and "backup.dta" so that there were exactly the same files as in the old folder, but these ones work.

Sounds like a corrupted file, huh?

Pumaman

hmm, that is very strange indeed. It has me baffled, in fact.

Do you still have a copy of the old game folder which has the problem? If so, any chance you could zip it up and send it to me so I can try and work out what happened?

How very puzzling.

Meowster

Thank god I keep my computer like a trash can. Do you mind if I send it to you over MSN or AOL? Only Geocities takes forever, and with large uploads it tends to screw up. It's 1.90mb.

MSN: Yufster@hotmail.com
AOL:YufsterChan

I'll be on for ages.

Pumaman

Thanks for sending it.

The reason for the problems was that you had an old version of the ac2game.dta file in your Compiled folder, which was overriding the new one.

If you just delete your Compiled folder and save the game again, it should all work.

I'll update the editor in future to spot this problem and take care of it.

Meowster

Yay, I CONTRIBUTED something useful!!! Kinda.

But does that explain why it didn't believe there was a view 30, even before I switched to the newer version of AGS? I only switched because it insisted there was no view 30 .
