So, Dreamfall, the sequel/followup to The Longest Journey, has gone gold for the XBOX and it will be released on the PC and XBOX (not 360) on April 17, 2006 (USA, at least).

What's gone gold? It's when the game is done and it has been sent to manufacturing to press the discs and pack it into cases to be put in stores.

What's The Longest Journey? What? You don't know? It's probably the last great full-length adventure, and probably the reason why a lot of newer adventure game attempts have a female character as the lead.

I'm getting that game for sure. TLJ may have had some dumb puzzles and some weird stuff, but it had plenty of cool stuff to just look past those mistakes. Hopefully they know what we didn't like and avoided it in the sequel, and this one is definitely is going to be more epic than the first.

Are you buying the game?

The purple gorilla scares me. Seriously. I was excited, but when I started reading some reviews, it kinda put me off. I'm open to reading more about the game, but as of now, no.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

Probably, but I'll be waiting for it to drop in price because I'm a cheapskate  ;)

I'll definitely be buying it. I'm also a little confused by the term "gone gold". I assume it's had a lot of preorders, or something.

Scummbuddy

No, no. Edmundo was being funny with the way he wrote that. "Gone Gold" does mean that they have the final disc and final version of the game (they hope) on a single disc and it is off to the presses, like he said. It doesn't mean like in music when a record goes gold or platinum, which refers to the amount sold.

No, actually it's because I can't write. I've modified the post. :P

Radiant

I won't buy it because my system is too low-end. Even if it were not, I would wait for some positive stories from people I trust to have a taste similar to my own.

The moment of silence, Still life, Farenheit???

BOYD1981

the review i read of Still Life made it sound a bit rubbish, and Fahrenheit isn't an adventure game.

The Moment of Silence was not good either.

Fahrenheit had its own problems.

Still Life was decent... until its crappy, crappy ending.  I found it... upsetting  :P

This is the week! I've preordered my game and I can't wait to play it.

The two things I loved about TLJ were: 1) colorful Language without shame, 2) Epicness. and it seems that this game is going overboard with epicness and I'm sure the language will be there.

The game also seems to be using 3d effectively, not just for the sake of being 3d. Replaying TLJ over the past week made me realize how limited having flat backgrounds can be on a game of epic proportions, because I really wanted to look on all directions and just run around the world.

There's also a new website: http://www.dreamfall.com/ . Just look at the screenshots and listen to the music.

I'll wait till the end of this year before I buy it.  That's when I plan to replace my Win98 machine with the top of the line WinXP computer, just in time before getting stuck with Vista.

Pet Terry

I just ran this.

My computer didn't even meet the minimum requirements! I didn't realize that the games nowadays need so powerful computer, when did that happen? So no, I don't think I will be buying it anytime soon.

On the other hand, I haven't even played the full version of TLJ yet. I saw it in bargain bin the other day, though...

If TLJ was the last game of the good old point and click type, then good riddance. I will never combine rubber duckie with magnet ever again.

While I'd prefer a second or third opinion first, the more cynical of my expectations seem to have been realized.
IGN review:

I'll probably restrict this to must buy after it hits budget pricing.

Igor

But then again..
It got 5 out of 5 on Gamespy: http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/dreamfall/702029p1.html
9.6 out of 10 on Xboxaddict: http://www.xboxaddict.com/products/staff_reviews/view_xbox.php?Product_ID=1279
8.1 out of 10 on Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/longestjourney2wt/review.html?sid=6147844

What all reviewers basicaly agree on, is that the game features one of the best stories and some of the most believable characters in video games yet.. packed in a bit limiting gameplay. Sounds like TLJ if you ask me. So i'm guessing, if you are fan of TLJ you'll like Dreamfall too.

edmundito

Yeah! I heard it kind of cliffhangs and you want to know more! Oh wait, that's kind of TLJ too!

I hated the IGN review. the person was too concerned over technique (graphics, sound, gameplay, load times, etc. etc.) than the actual game itself (the story, was it funetc.), unlike the GameSpy review which is ironic because Gamespy is owned by IGN. Then again, I hate that games have to be judged like figure skaters instead of being reviewed like a movie or a book or anything else that has some kind of cultural value embedded in it. (which is why I particually like reading the underground section at adventure gamers and the stories in Idle Thumbs.

Beyond technique, what do you see? Like Cortez would say, or something.

I want the game now! :(

MrColossal

Yes but what the reviews I have read have stated is:

The graphics are gorgeous, the story is great, the animations are iffy and the game play is uninspired and watered down.

If a review focuses on gameplay [like you said IGN did too much of] and explains to me that the gameplay is nothing new and boring, that is what I want to know. I don't want them to focus on the great story or the characters. I want to know if I'll have fun playing the game, not be interested in the cutscenes. This is a game, not a book or movie.
