Anyone know any 2D sci-fi theme game, that has atleast 640x480 resolution. I need to see how characters/backgrounds look in higher resolution games, because I'm planning game in that theme and i can't decide how to draw  :(

All the ones that come to my mind had pre-rendered graphics and FMV characters on occasion - like The Journeyman Project series or The "Christopher Walken" Ripper.

For drawn graphics in sci-fi you should search the AGS database in that category.

These come to my mind:

Space Quest 6
The Orion Conspiracy
Kaptain Brawe: A Brawe New World
Machinarium

Oh, now I remember - Callahan's Crosstime Saloon has lovely drawn, "realistic" graphics.

Higher-res sci-fi adventures mostly use prerendered 3d backdrops with 3d characters - like in The Longest Journey, Syberia, Blade Runner(voxel characters here) and many others.

From 2d games I can only remember I have No Mouth and I must Scream - I think it was 640x480, and used a rough dirty/gritty style to mesh characters with backgrounds. It's a slightly disturbed game, though. And by "slightly" I mean - seriously disturbed. But very good. :)

As for AGS games - the obvious one will be A Second Face - The Eye of Geltz is watching us

So you'll probably have to invent the wheel here, but I'm sure it can be done.

Innocent Until Caught 1 and 2 were pretty interesting as far as the sci-fi universe goes.  Puzzles were a ho-hum variety between easy, illogical, or frustrating, so it covers the gamut.  If you like the idea of playing a space-thief-turned-hero then it's probably something you'd enjoy.

Also, there's a little-known Space Quest riffer called Rex Nebular that was actually hundred times more fun than any Space Quest game in my opinion (and I've played them all).

Finally, if you don't mind a little 50's sci-fi there's It Came From the Desert, a delightful little action-adventure about the dangers of ATOMIC BOMBS in a 50's setting.  I have only fond memories of this game, although the sequel, ANTHEADS, I didn't really get into in spite of it being a faithful (and direct) sequel.

None of those have 640x480 or higher though.

Go here, optionally select an appropriate year (>1995) and start browsing:

TheRoger

Not Sci-Fi but take a look at "The wispered world" for highres 2D graphics with beautiful backgrounds.

And Rocket Ranger!  :D

TheRoger

Hehe, I changed background style because of "Whispered world", though I never played that game  ;D Need to save up some money and try that.

640x480 is large enough to paint backgrounds in a larger scale and resize them with bicubic without making everything too blurry. If needed, you may touch them up at pixel level after that.

I'm not surprised you didn't find the inspiration you were looking for. 3D lent itself so well to sci-fi that there are no outstanding examples of 2D sci-fi in higher resolutions that I can think of. I guess Space Quest 6 is the best example, but still used a lot of 3D elements, resulting in a slightly patchy look.

I do think Ben304's style would translate interestingly to high-res (or even 3D in the vein of Oddworld).

I'd take a look at some Deponia and A New Beginning screenshots.

Both are very beautiful. Neither are released yet.

A New Beginning IS released http://www.amazon.de/Deep-Silver-New-Beginning-PC/dp/B003TPW4X4/. Looks beautiful, maybe I should buy it.

Ah, so it is! Thanks for pointing that out, cat!

It does look very beautiful!

You know, I just now realized that those are two different games. The premises sounded so similar.

The commercial adventure games that come to mind for modern sci-fi, like Moment of Silence and Perry Rhodan, are all 3D-rendered. There's the white chamber, I suppose - the graphics are a bit weird, though.

New Beginning looks great but I haven't found any actual gameplay videos of it to judge beyond the trailer and still shots (which all look like cutscenes).

It's been out for months (the German version): http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/a-new-beginning

...so I bet there are some playthroughs on YT.
