I'm trying to figure out how to legally distribute my game (on floppy disk) only I need to be able to effectivly zip it up and then have an "install" type program so that people don't have to use win-zip to open it up. Does anyone know how to do this without breaking copyright laws? Also: Could anyone do this for me (unless it's REALLY easy) as I can't really download any programs right now as I'm not even using my own computer (let alone a fast and effective one).

I think A Day In The Life by Mr Rodekill (I hope I got the title right) had such a thing, although I'm not sure...

Any help or advice would be greated with greating and possible cake (but not cake like on Corrination Street, wot the old people ate... I mean regular cake... I don't even WATCH Corrination Street, I just heard about it from my BF. Aparently it was funny)

The Clickteam Installer (unregistered free version) one seems to be pretty popular:

Here it is

Also, I'd be willing to do it for you, but make it a chocolate cake  :P.

Captain Mostly

does this unregistered free thingy have distribution issues attached (i.e. is it going to be technically illigal for me to sell my program that uses it...)?

If not, then yay! I'll use that! If so: I need something different... Is it possible to do this sort of thing in VB? I can use that (but wouldn't know how to make it pull this kind of gag)

Is "Inno Setup" a cryptic coded message I don't understand? Because I don't understand what it means...  ???

Yeah, I wroked it out after searching on google. There's 18 ways to do it, apparently:

Incidentally, the cake thing reminds me of Chris Morris's thing a few years back:

Heh, don't bother with mine, not sure if it's OK for commercial use. Sorry.

However.....from the Inno Setup website......

Is it really free of charge, even for commercial use?

Yes, it may be used completely free of charge, even when deploying commercial applications. However if you wish to show your appreciation and support its development you can make a donation.

So. go with that one.....

he he he. That Cake drug thing was from the UTTERLY BRILLIANT Brass Eye program! Someone ought to start a thread about how brilliant Brass Eye was so that I can say things like: "Yo! The peadophile episode was the best by MILES!" and "Brass Eye was good, but JAM was better..." and "Do you remember The Day Today, which was also really really good..." and so on and so forth.

Delphi used to come with "Install Shield" (the professional installer that almost every commercial product uses) -- I may still have that on CD somewhere.

speaking of installers, VISE is offereing a freeware license for their installer if you make freeware,  which I guess it's pretty cool. You can get it at:  http://www.mindvision.com/Pricing/shareware.asp

but if you game is comercial, mostly, I guess you have to pay. or get INNO SETUP!!!!
http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php

There's also NULLSOFT INSTALLER 2.0, which looks very similar to inno setup:, but I think it uses a different script system for making a setup program:

Just use an archiver with both "create self-extract archive" and "create split file resources" capabilities, one being RAR (don't like it, but...).

Captain Mostly

I have got and used inno setup thankyou everyone!

although I'm a LITTLE dissapointed that no one made a comical reference to my deeply clever thread title. I'm only here for the gratification of people spotting how cool my puns are ("informer" sounds a little like "installer"! D'ya see wot I did!! YAK YAK YAK!)

If my puns aren't leet, I don't know WHO'S are...

QuoteInstaller... (a-lick ya bum-bum down!)

Sounds like some shit Missy "Fat" Elliot would belch.

I fear it was a little before her time (At least her big time)

SOMEONE must remember it... I swear it was in the charts only ten years ago!

Toefur

Heh heh heh. Who doesn't remember Informer!? Crazy people... I remember the day my sister got the lyrics for it off a friend... that was one of the happiest days of my life.

At the time.

Also quite a let down, too.

I am so going to download that now. You bastard mostly! It's stuck in my head!

I have Install Maker Proffesional, so if you send the files to peter@w8ff.com I'll be happy to make an installer for you.

I can also make in VB an installer for you, but then you still need to have the VB dll's, wich are about 800kb if it ain't more!

Captain Mostly

As I say, I've made the install file now, but many thanks for your offers!

I am interested in this professional installer though... would this allow for themed VPXT images to be displayed throughout the installation process? If it would allow for a more personalised feel than inno setup, I may well take you up on that! (unless there are legal issues about distribution, of which I am much afeared!)

TECHNOLOGY!!!!

To be honest, I don't think that the paedophile episode was the funniest (being half as long as the rest didn't do it any favours), and Jaaaam was quite clearly the best thing ever (whatever happened to 4 later, eh?)

Also, Mostly, I think I remember you sying in the 'How gay are you' thread that your boyfriend was rather gay, as gay people go; but watching Corination Street?  What's more, finding it funny?

That's...

Just...

So...

Very odd.
