The Secret of Monky Island is that Guybrush is a little boy from the late 19th century dreaming of being a pirate when he got lost in an amusement park - if Lucasarts wouldn't have made MI3 and MI4 without Ron Gilbert.

- That's my theory.

That may be right, but LeChuck's glowing eyes do set things up for a sequel. Ron Gilbert once joked he would make an alternative Monkey Island 3: The Secret of Monkey Island or your Money Back. Also, do you mean 20th century? Little Gubrush and Little LeChuck's clothes aren't late 19th century.

Edit: I see what you mean NsMn, having googled a screenshot. LeChuck's clothes are definitely 20th century and the others strike me as a stylised version of 1950s styles. You're right that they look dated though. It's probably the various carnival anachronisms that made me confident it was the 20th century.

NsMn

They're not? Well, only Chuckie looks modern... Guybrush and his parents wear really old-fashioned clothes.

Phemar

The secret is that Guybrush lost his parents in an amusement park and the whole game is seen through his imagination's eye.

Hence the anachronisms etc. The tunnels under the islands are maintenance tunnels.

Who cares about Monkey Island, I want to know the shocking secret of Donkey Island.

Layabout

Uhh, only 3 people know the ACTUAL secret of Monkey Island. Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman.

as for the carnival thing... there is no actual proof that was ever the secret of monkey island.
I am Jean-Pierre.

I think it had something to do with Guybrush parents..

This is the way i saw it, but Ron is always so vague.

The secret was...
a great way of selling the game to curious and gullible people like you!

The secret to capitalist consumerism: make surepeople want to buy something, even though they don't know why they want to/what good it's for.

That's the long explanation for: it was just a catchy title.

Never did figure it out.

As they say in the first game, only LeChuck knows... why don't you ask him!
