Isegrim

Go see the movie "Apocalypse Now", that might be a good inspiration and will give you a good impression of war atmosphere...
Besides, there might even be some potential for an adventure game... (Similar to Indiana Jones)

I think you should have some river parts in the jungle.

Layabout

I have three points to contribute. Here they are.

1) Learn to spell

2) Learn to use grammer.

3) What are you asking people to critique, this here being the 'critics lounge'.

The end.

Pirate Jack:  English is not my native language, but I think it's spelt "grammar..." and I don't think "critique" is a verb either...
(sorry, please don't take it personally, but I couldn't resist... ;D ;D)

Uh, critique is a verb... it's what you do here... critique things...

You don't sound old enough, or mature enough to understand anything about the Vietnam war.  There was layers of political, social and militarical actions that weaved intricate threads of confusion all over the whole war.  It wasn't just some soldier running through jungles, shooting people.

To use the Vietnam War as a backdrop, you'd have to dig deep into emotions, feelings and situations I don't think you could handle.  Vietnam is a very emotional and deep subject for many people.  It would just come off crude.

However, you could do a Jungle Commando game, in a non-descript setting - a fantasy setting basically.  It would be a cool setting.  Just don't calously use Vietnam.

I'm Australian, we spell some words differently... or something... :p

I was more annoyed you used m8s instead of mates. And that your keyboard was lacking a period key and your spacebar doesnt seem to work.

Mr Flibble

I'm with blackthorne, Vietnam was a complicated affair. I mean, do you know any thing about it?
For example, it was once called French Indo-China?

Not really relevant, but if you don't know the background, you're just going to come off purile.

And the grammar think is a kick to the jockstrap.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

erm no, that's critisize, or however the feck it's spelt...

But yeah go with the random jungle, instead of Vietnam. Vietnam has issues I wouldn't touch with a 50 foot pole...

yes.

anyway, jungle is really hard to draw also, so I'd take that into consideration. At least it is for me.

I thought we'd tried our hardest to outlaw slagging people off on these forums? I agree though, this is a forum not a mobile phone - so please try and use words rather than abbreviations of words, Raider. This is a place to discuss things rather than chit-chat.

As for your game, I agree with Isegrim - check out Apocolypse Now, it'll certainly give you some great ideas for a possible serious adventure game.. :)

I think interactive fiction is the way to go:

>GET AGENT ORANGE

You get the Agent Orange.

>DROP AGENT ORANGE

I think Blackthorne has given the smartest advice, why not just set the game in any old jungle and make a Broken Sword style game where you find a mysterious temple or a lost civilisation.

If you want the war element, why not have a plane crash or a shipwreck lead soldiers to end up in unfamiliar territory.

Oh man... I'm definatley all over this game. There's so much that could be done with Vietnam in IF form:

>AVOID DRAFT
Your futile attemps to avoid the draft land you in prison.

Or later in the game, when you actually reach vietnam...

>FIND CHARLIE
You search the bushes, but Charlie cannot be found.

>GET POT
You take the dime bag lying on the ground.
>SMOKE POT
I make music.
