You could go to the ags games page and set the genre filter to "horror". There are some free horror ags games.

Yep, that'll do it. :)

For those games outside AGS, you might try these WinterMute games:

Beyond the Threshold
The White Chamber
Dead City, though the developers website is down and I can't find an alternate download location.
Steam: LimpingFish
PSN: LFishRoller
XB: TheActualLimpingFish
Spotify: LimpingFish

There's also the awesome (and barely known) Barren. It's not a horror game per se, but still rather dark and somewhat creepy... and with a GREAT athmosphere.

Forget those modern kids, adventurer, and listen to my ancient wisdom  ;)
Two words: LURKING HORROR. It's a classic, it's free (abandonia.com) and it will scare the living shit out of you. No joke, this really is a great game.
Also, it can quite possibly be run on any recent coffee machine.

More modern, but still very good: Clive Barker's Undying (more shooter than adventure but very good and glum atmosphere).

If you want to laugh at what we considered horror back in "teh old days", check out 7th Guest and Phantasmagotia.

Ah, and there's this really scary thing...

Realms of the Haunting is also a very competent horror rpg with Doom elements.

And then, of course, there are the Elvira games by Horrorsoft, which I cannot recommend enough.

Holy- that looks beautiful, I want it!

I can't believe no one has mentioned Yahtzee's adventure games. They're not fully horror games, maybe "thriller" is a better term. They have their share of spookiness and gore though.

Start with Five Days a Stranger and take it from there. :)

Layabout

No-one mentioned them because they are full of contrived plot devices and are arse-loosingly crap games.

Me too... a lot...
Each to his own, I suppose.

I figured it was a given, but I had forgotten that he said "keep in mind I'm a total adventure gaming newbie."

I love Trilby´s Notes and I think you can consider it a horror game. It is full of gore and has some playing surprises. The only problem (not for me) is its parse-based game play.

You may want to check out the interactive fiction game Anchorhead, though I'm not sure where you can get it.

Snake

I've downloaded pretty much all of the horror games in the database and haven't yet been able to play them all. But I am going to recommend Prodigal. I really enjoyed this game but have not yet had the time to thank the creators. Though there are a few bugs and nit-picky type things of my own here and there, they did an exceptional job with this game. The first part was very reminicent of the original Resident Evil. Ace music as well. Very atmospheric.

If you happen to download Prodigal 0, which is on the same page, be sure to play through Prodigal first.

If you're into parser games with horrible graphics check out the Hugo House of Horror series. They're not bad games but some of the puzzles can be a bit contrived and they're not really "horror" per se. Just though I'd throw them out there.

I played this a while ago and it was extremely scary.
If you like your survival horrors then you'll love this.

*This isn't the same download I used when I played the game, so be vigilant.

Totally.

Except they may or may not be free.

Pst....
Spoiler
I'd bet you could find them on an abandonware site. But we're not supposed to talk about such things, so don't ask about which sites are good. Just google it.
