I thought it might be useful, or simply interesting - to tell people where, when and for how much we have found classic adventure games that we love. I might learn of somewhere to buy Under A Killing Moon through it, and it might give you an idea of where to look to find some other things too. So, if you find something recently (please don't tell us about games you found five years ago) then do speak up!

Today, I found Beneath A Steel Sky on CD for 99p at my local Oxfam - I was chuffed! :D

Hm. That's all!

Two days ago I've seen Fallout 2 at a local store. About $10. Too bad I had no money for it.

I bought a copy of Gabriel Knight 1 at Oxfam once, complete with all its floppy discs and manual and clomic book and everything. i had planned to actually install it and have a real authentic oldey timey adventurey gamey experience but I couldn't get the thing on my computer.
So I'm going to sell it on Ebayt, I shoul;d get about 310 for it if my research is correct (ie: Looking at ONE copy that had been put up for auction on ebay)

What?

Oh, don't look at me like that! I don't have any use for it!

I always went to this department store with a neglected multi media corner. I bought simon 3d, guilty, ringworld and loads of other crap, adventure games, all in cardboard box and for less that â,¬7,- (still overpriced for games that don't even run on a modern computer). Sadly they cleaned out that wall last spring and placed a Dixons in the corner. Redundant, since there is a Dixons outside next to the department store. I bought most of the games for the lapaset quiz over there, so they still sell crappy games ,but no more crappy dos games..

Other places to go game delving is in toy stores, book stores, music stores and computer stores (not computer game stores, I mean). Back in the 90's when PC's became populair must-haves, lots of there stores got their own little multi media corner. But the owners don't know games, so they neglected it, maybe till this day. Which is perfect for us adventure gamers, since we want to buy games released in the 90's, not modern day. A perfect example is that hidden corner inside the music store on Athens airport.

And of course the normal game shop. Just the other day I bought Zork: Grand Inquisitos. They had more than one copy and also had copies of Monkey Island 4, Full Throttle, The Longest Journey and a few others not worth mentioning (why every game store sells myst and csi games is beyond me).

I like to tell one more game delving story; I was in a book store and found Woodruff for â,¬50,-. The jewel case was broken and the price tag was so old it turned yellow/brown. I might love adventure games, but I'm not going to pay full price for a decade old game.

I hope I don't sound smart-ass, or plain stupid, but isn't that game freeware nowadays?

Edit: Not that I would find 99p too expensive, of course.

With a CD you can display it on your wall or something. :P

Our local gamestore has Teh Gabriel Knight games, the Longest Journey series, the Simon the Sorcerer series pack and The Fallout Games and many more.

Yep, it is freeware - but I like collecting adventure games, having them on CD is important to me! I don't go all out and try and find original boxed editions, I just like to have a copy I know I can rely on in the future :)

Mikko

Yeah, not long after I had posted I came up with the same solution. :)

To give at least little something to the topic too, I think good places to hit paydirt would be garage sales and similar.

At the Earl's Court Computer Fair in 1988, someone was selling original Infocom adventures (in the big grey boxes) for 5 quid apiece. They had many copies of everything, in what looked like boxes straight from the publisher. Unfortunately I was a poor student at the time, so I only had cash for a few of them: Enchanter, Sorceror, Spellbreaker, Leather Goddesses of Phobos, Starcross, Stationfall, Trinity, The Lurking Horror. Awesome times!
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II

I recently bought Freddy Pharkas for 0.33 â,¬. Haven't had time to play it yet, though.
I look just like Bobbin Threadbare.

Yeah, it's on scummvm.org. Cd and floppy version.
I'm composing the music for this game:

There should be an online store that sells classic adventure games (legally) for low prices. I'd shop there for sure. :)
