Why don't we make a section with all sprites ripped by lucas games or others?

I remember I had ripped monkey island1 & 2, indiana jones 4 characters, screens and other cool stuff, before my hard disk files were lost  :(. I used a program called costrip (http://scumm.mixnmojo.com).

If we rip the cool stuff and we convert it for ags everyone can use it for new games!. Example if someone has guybrush character he can share it with all ags users, and much time is saved.  ;)
I think also is needed someone who is able to put all the cool stuff together, because some sprites are divided. So I ask to the people who can do that, their help for this project. The sprites and other ripped files won't be used for commercial games, only for free games!  8)

Let me know......

One word:

WHY?

Let people rip it themselves and get sued (probly wont happen though). I, like many people, prefer hand drawn sprites as it shows effort and originality. Thats just my oppinion tho

I gather you're a N00b, so I'm gonna explain how it works here at AGS:

None of us use other people's backgrounds and sprites, unless it's a joke or a test game. We all make our own sprites, even if we're not that good, as it adds originality and ups the standard of our game.

The only time we'll use other beegees is when we're in a team game etc.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

(If this came out harsh, it wasn't intended to, I'm just trying to help.)

that's not true at all Zor, many people have edited sierra and lucasarts and random other company sprites for many games. We don't all make our own sprites [Roy Lazoravich stole just about every single sprite from Monkey Island to make his game]

a huge site full of sprites [much like Junc's] could also be used as a way to look at how other adventure game art looks, see how they handled certain things like night scenes or drawing sprites or working with a limited pallete.

So you might like a reference archive. I think this could be a pretty good idea!

You want to draw a jungle scene, but know what to add in to it. You go to the reference archive, search "Jugle BG" and woila! You can get a few ideas...learn from everyone else!

I say brilliant!

The Thinker

I think if we rip sprites from other games, we can help everyone who isn't good enough to design his own sprites and want to make a sequel or just another game.  ;)

I remember many people were going to do game sequels, but they abbandoned their project because weren't good enough to make sprites

I think sharing is the best thing a community can do.  8) If we start this project many people will take part in ags community ever if they are bad designers.  :)

So keep the "sharing" alive!

weren't good enough to make sprites

NOT GOOD ENOUGH?

There is no such thing as not good enough in ags. I still get a kick when playing text based games, the forefounder of text parser games. We have a critics lounge to help people improve.

although this post seems random

within it lies truth.
everything will become clear soon.
but until then, rest assured everything will be ok.
surely you trust me?
i would trust you, in the same situation.
tempting as it is to ask, i must ask you to refrain.
eventually the answer will come.

wow, you spelled "a website" vertically... now I must make rethink my life.  :P
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

Archive of original sprites isn't such a bad idea. Another thing is how it fits HERE, on AGS website. Not much, in my opinion.
But It's fine for learning and fangames. Using this to encourage massive use of someone else's artwork is...    ...well, If I'd use someone's gfx and my game becomes famous, I'd be ashamed, not proud.
Bad designers are many. Bad as "yet bad". Community helps them alot to become not so bad designers and they don't need to steal someone's hard work for that.
There's alot nicer way, similar to yours - RON games. Everybody shares gfx and it's absolutely legal ("Okay" is better word).

If done sparingly, I don't think ripping sprites (or backgrounds) is bad. It certainly won't get you sued any more than making a prequel/sequel (for the simple reason that a lawyer-type won't play through your entire game and spot which sprites are ripped).
I am reasonably sure, for instance, that King's Quest IIvga contains a number of graphics ripped directly from Sierra games, including the rooms for the wrong destinations of the Door, and the 'teleport poof' graphic which is from the genie in KQ5. I don't see a problem with that.

That's a pretty quick 180 there.

I think it's a great idea. An archive of a ton of different sprites, art styles... you know what they say, good artists, um, do something, great artists steal. I don't mean copy paste sprites, but to be able to have all that resource to reference when creating your own art, I think that'd be really useful.

A similar idea for an archive was mentioned here.  Lately, I've seriously been considering developing this site, an archive where people can log in and upload scripts, graphics, and music, and download what they need for their projects.

Would anyone be willing to host this?

EDIT: CJ, I'm aware that you offered to host this if anyone was willing to make it, but I think it might be better if it wasn't affiliated specifically with AGS, so developers who use other engines would feel more welcome to use it, too.

I think ripping sprites from games and share them in an archive could be a great idea  ;D. I'd like to know if there are sites that have all sprites extracted by indiana jones and monkey island games  ::). I don't want to spend my time drawing 'cause i'm not good to make designs.  :'(

BlackMan890

Ripping other graphics and character is a sign of lazyness
pm me if you find this really disturbing or insulting

but there are few exeptions like making a sequal to mi or atlantis or the game you ripped

MrK2

These people are right, it could be a great idea make a sprite archive to remake games or make sequel games.

MrColossal

then get ripping and set up a website, you don't need our permission to do that

you need the companies that made the games, but I doubt the big ones will really care.

also, not that it matters but this thread is quite a few months old and nothing came of it then. so saying that you're all for the idea is fine but if you don't take action you'll never see it.
