Ishmael

I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

<Calin> Ishmael looks awesome all the time

The video doesn't do the free beer justice.

I met Dave back when he was only a DEMI-God!

MrColossal

I met Dave back when we were on EzBoard!

And we got some VERY expensive sandwiches!
"This must be a good time to live in, since Eric bothers to stay here at all"-CJ also: ACHTUNG FRANZ!

Andail

I spent a couple of days at his appartment-o-love in New York City. We went to karaokee, had pizza and tried on hats at street markets.

Nice movies.

Good presentation you made! :).

Very cool! Informative and interesting look at your game, plus interaction with real Jews! Well done Dave! :D

interaction with real Jews! :D

Real jews!  With genuine kvetching action!

Chicky

Awesome Dave :)

I never realised your game got quite this big, i thought the Shivah was a mags entry? I guess i'm just slow on the uptake. Awesome presentation anyway! Yay Dews!

American Pie 3: The Wedding made me laugh the other night because of a line about Shivah's, reminded me of your game, Dave!

Dave Gilbert

Hm.  Since you all know what a shivah is now, you'll probably get one of my favorite jewish jokes:

A jewish man brings his native american fiance home to meet his mother.
"Pleased to meet you," the fiance says. "My name is Su-ka-tawa, but you can call me Running Water."
"Well," the mother retorts.  "My name is Rosa Epstein, but you can call me sitting shivah!"

It's funny.  Really.

Evil

Wow, that was a fantastic presentation. I don't think that AGS has every, or could ever, be presented better. The very hands on approach was very good and I think they took away a lot more then just the "Hey, look at this cool game I made." And for the little amount of time you had, you gave them the whole scoop. Even when you were demoing AGS I thought "Wow, that looks really easy. I should try that!"

I didn't want to start a new thread, so I figured I'd post this here...

I'm really glad they once again misspelled the ShivaHHHHHHHHHHHH.  :=

How funny.  I was just at an IGDA meeting and saw Greg Costikyan of Manifesto speak on a panel.  Thanks for the image, LimpingFish.

I was in Barnes and Noble tonight and flicking through the latest "Retro Gamer" magazine (with the Oric retrospective) I found a review of the freeware version of The Shivah. They gave it 86%, and said it was excellent but got a little unfocused towards the end. At least they spelt Shivah correctly.

I didn't fancy laying down $12 (it's published in the UK and imported here) so I can't scan it. Sorry.

Dave, I watched your utube video, and I gotta say, you are my new crush. The way you carried yourself is something I very much envy.  If I found a cure for an incurable disease tomorrow, I would have trouble standing in front of people to tell them what I did.  I played your game and thought it was terrific.  Don't worry about the crush thing.  I am 37, married, and have a grandbaby on the way.  There will be no stalking involved.

Nikolas

I was probably the 47th person to buy the game, but now, hopefully, the sales will have gone up by 1000000000000000%... (anyways, above 500? 1000?).

No need to tell us Dave of course, just wishful thinking (and based to what we see all around us, it seems that it could be possible).

Either way the soundtrack was sooo nice, and your collaborators are also brilliant so... I will pre-order my copy of the blackwell legacy ;) :D

Hehehe.  I WISH, Niklaus. :)  The game's gotten a ton of publicity but it usually amounts to a small flurry of sales followed by the standard 1-2 a day.  The fact that the game was originally freeware contributed big to this, since over 10,000 people played the game for free.  Had even 5% of that number purchased the game, I'd be much better off. ;)

The fact that people are actually pre-ordering BL has given me some renewed confidence, and the small press BL has generated has brought more people to the site, who are then presented with Shivah, etc.  It's my hope that each subsequent release will help market the previous releases, but only time will tell.

Marlamoe:  Thanks!  I can't stand looking at that video now, as every stupid twitch and stammer stabs at my gut like a neurotic dagger.  I watch it and think, "You could have gotten a haircut, you slob.  Stop smacking your lips!  Do you have to say 'um' or 'ah' every other word? Bleh, you're a disgrace."

Scummbuddy

Retro Gamer # 29 has a small little blurb about your game. I took a camera phone picture of it, but I'm working on getting it up.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.
