Somewhat of an update, as I've started serious work on the game again after a bit of a "xmas break". I wasn't quite happy with the old control GUI, so I'm completely redone it and I rather like the outcome. You can see it in one of the updated screenshots (in the first post) alongside the status GUI which remains on screen throughout most of the game.

Hp, MP and current level will be on screen all the time, and you can call up the control GUI (or whatever you want to call that sort of thing) to see other stats such as DEF, STR, WIS, LUCK and current EXP (and EXP necessary to reach the next level). You can also use/equip items/armour/weapons or magic.

The picture of the girl is whichever companion you choose.

There'll be some more updates soon, 'cause I'd at least like to post a screenshot of the first major battle.

I missed this thread the first time around even though I had heard about the project. And I must say... it is looking quite very good. I hope that you can get it done as soon as you can. I really like the stuff you produce, including Cirque de Zale and your comics :)

Pizzaman

The screenshots look amazing.  It looks extremely professional.

I usually hate it when things seem too girly and Pink , but this looks cool. I can't wait to play it.
And it has Anime style too , bonus!

Yeah, I agree. Usually when I hear someone's making a game "with ANIME in it!!11" I roll my eyes and curl up into a ball, but I promise it isn't like that ^_^ I just... happen to draw like that and I wanted to incorporate a little of my art into the game the same way your typical Japanese RPG does. I always adored the little character profile pictures in Breath of Fire 2 or FF4.

The game won't be "cutesy" as such, but I am trying to make it easy on the eyes. I always hated levels in otherwise pretty games that were set in an industrial zone or something. I want even my spooky, dark levels to have a certain ... aesthetic pleasure to them.

A good example of this is the forest level in Paper Mario 2. Typical dark forest, but holy hell, was it beautiful.

Pizzaman

So how do you make backgrounds like that?  Is it like tilesets?  and you just piece them together?  Or is there a program that handles that kinda stuff.

-Pizzaman

Kinoko

I'm just creating my own "tiles" and... putting them together. It's great, because I can get the look of tiles backgrounds, and the ease of not drawing every individual thing seperately, yet I have the freedom to not bother with tile placements if I want to (for example, the dungeon I'm working on now just has trees willy-nilly, not spaced out evenly). I'm using good ol' Paint Shop Pro.

This looks absolutely amazing!Ã,  :o I've always wanted to make a RPG! Especially one's like FF, BoF and Terranigma. But it just seems to be too much coding involved. It must take a lot of concentration and time to do all the coding and all the detail on the characters and the backrounds.
But looking forward to it.

Quick update, I've made the game's webpage now (check the first post) which I think is pretty snazzy. It's also got more screenshots and a more detailed completion report.

BTW, thanks everyone for the nice comments! ^_^

Pizzaman

Nice site.Ã,  Ohh you're the girl who made the circa de zale game.Ã,  Ã, :o

Your reputation precedes you well.Ã,  Judging from the quality of that game, this one is very promising.

btw, your game is featured on www.abandonia.com and got a good score.Ã,  Its a site with old dos games, and a handful of adventure games.

That's where i found the game actually, anyway i'm rambbling.Ã,

I had read the review before, Pizzaman, but thanks for pointing it out because you reminded me to check the 'comments' again :) Even though the game's close to a year old now, I still like seeing what people have said about it (and if there are any bugs still @_@).

Kinoko

*ahem* Another double post, sorry.

Just an update, there are some sample music tracks available on the first post.

Wow sweet screenshots!  I'm amazed at this!  The only thing is the music, I'm into alot of it but there are some instruments that sound kind of ick.  Like in Home at the drum fill of 38 seconds, try something with a little more snap to it.  Just my thoughts... Awesome though, truly!

In the other topic you said you hadn't worked on the game in weeks? Why not? Not inspired?  I think the game looks very cool, sort of takes me back to the days of Phantasy Star or Chrono Trigger.  Ten hours of gameplay? That'd be utterly delicious! ^^

Thanks Shab :) (Can I call you Shab?)

Yeah, my music skills are pretty nil. I may even get my music genius friend to rework them for me at some point.

I haven't worked on the game since Easter. I took an Easter break because I had been working on the game, well, an obscene amount each day and it had taken over my life. After Easter, because I had kicked the habit, I took advantage of my time to look for a job and do some other lifey stuff. Then, I was living every single day for a couple of weeks just waiting for mail to find out if I was going to Japan. Now that that's over, theoretically, I could start work on the game again, but I'm still jobless... ah fuck it, you know? I WILL start work on the game again. I'll try to find work around that.

You know, I've never played Phantasy Star... I guess I should some day.

Moresco

You can call me Shab...if it pleases you haha.  No worries about the music - and at some point I am going to start my adventure/rpg music archive up, just tons of excellent free music for people to steal and borrow from.  It will be groovy.  Alot of it is leftover melodies from my anime project which produced over 90 tracks and I'm only using about 50 or so.

Phantasy Star 2 is awesome, it's on the Sega Genesis!  Phantasy Star 3 is a bit different, and takes some adjusting to after playing 2.  Three is also on Sega Genesis.  Oh, you can get 1,2, and 3 on a GBA cart if you can find it.  Phantasy Star 4 is only on Genesis I believe, it's pretty good in the style of 2 but it's way too easy IMO.  I played the Online games but I'm such an old school gamer, it's hard to get into it.

Didn't go to Japan? That's a shame, I can't wait to visit Japan myself, I'd be going to do language studies though.  Yah no job here either.  I've got two weeks to get one though, because I need to get some things in order for a job I hope to get in November.

Ah, I meant... I AM going to Japan, but the waiting for the mail telling me so is over ^_^

Pizzaman

Christ! I got your room music stuck in my head now.
