Funny :)
This is going to be interesting since DOTT is my alltime fav. :D
This is wonderful. Maniac Mansion is one of my all-time favourite games. ;D
I'm very much looking forward to this one.
I wish you all the best. :D
I've already heard about your project, best wishes. When are you planning to release the demo and the full game?
Yay! Now it's finally official \o/
Wow this looks great! I'll make sure to keep an eye on this one. Good luck

I think a demo or a teaser will be ready somewhere in 2010. We can't say much about the final release date, cause we're working on it in our spare time.
So, as the Duke would say: "When it's done." ;)
By the way, the working title is "

Please PLEASE PLEASE don't let this project die guys. It sounds and looks amazing.
Whoo I can't wait! We can never have enough MM games :)
Love that Razor!
Damn, I really love the look of this game! I just replayed DOTT a while ago but I never actually got around to finishing Maniac Mansion. I'm sure this game will change that though. :D
This looks absolutely awesome :D
I never actually finished maniac mansion so I'm waiting patiently for this :)
Spectacular! I really liked the open-ended playing style of Maniac Mansion. Very different from any other adventure I have played. An updated version is more than welcome - especially if it looks that good. :D
ALTER!!! Das ist ja mal mega-geil!
Ahem... I mean, DUDE!!! That's awesome!
I like Wierd Ed's walking animation. ;D
Wow!! Very nice!! I was expecting this since that "Dott style characters" C&C thread, also, Syd looks a bit like Conroy Bumpus haha :P
Anyway, good luck!!
Just so you know, in the original Maniac Mansion, Dave is always one of the three playable characters no matter who you choose (because it's his girlfriend who's been kidnapped). According to Day of the Tentacle, the three heroes who officially went into the Mansion on that fateful night (a night that had a game based upon it) were Dave, Bernard (of course) and either Syd or Razor (since they're the only ones able to make Green Tentacle's band successful and microwave Weird Ed's hamster, both of which are known to have officially happened). In interviews, it's been revealed that Razor was originally intended to be playable in Day of the Tentacle, which means that it was probably her and not Syd who went into the Mansion with Dave and Bernard.
Concerning new features, are there plans for voice acting auditions? Or a new playable character (for example, maybe Hoagie, who could be capable of getting a different version of the ending Syd and Razor can get, so you wouldn't have to make too many changes).
Edit: Also, please please please please PLEASE remix the title theme!
In fact we are planing to have a special ending for every incarnation of the 'trio'.
And yes, we're playing with the idea to have one or two completly new characters to enter the mansion with.
Hoagie and Laverne can't go because it's clear that they've visited the mansion in Dott for the first time. 8)
And a remix of the theme is also on the list. :)
Looks great! DOTT is one of my all-time favorite games, and I like seeing Maniac Mansion get the same treatment. Will you be able to die in this version as well?
Wow looks good. So these are all your own graphics?
Well, Bernard of course is the same as in Dott, the interface too and we borrowed some items from Dott and Sam&Max to capture the original look, but everything you can see here is stuff made by our team. 8)
Quote from: Scorpio82 on Fri 13/11/2009 18:46:40
Will you be able to die in this version as well?
No, the kids won't face final death and we'll cut out the dead ends. Maybe they'll die in a way like Guybrush in MI1 and MI3. ;)

Concerning the Hugo and Laverne thing: AGH! I've been out-nerded!
And concerning the endings, how the game ends in the original version depends on which character's special skills you use to get the ending. Michael, Wendy, Bernard and Syd/Razor each have an ending only they can get (Syd and Razor have the same ending). Dave has no special skills and Jeff's only skill is fixing the telephone, which Bernard can do. So, doing the math, assuming Dave is always a member of the party and assuming no new characters are added, there are six selectable characters, so there are fifteen versions of the original trio. Taking into account the number of different endings each version of the trip is capable of getting (and treating Syd and Razor's endings as being different), there are 25 trio-and-ending combinations. If you make Dave optional (as in, replaceable with a different selectable character like the others) or add any new characters, this number will, of course, become bigger. If you give every single trio-and-ending combination it's own ending sequence (or even just an end sequence for every version of the trio, shown after the original ending and ignoring how the Meteor was dealt with), I will be very impressed.
Edit: Oh, and is there any chance of voice acting? Maybe you can release it without voices first and release a voice-acted version later. I'm not sure, but I might be good at Dr. Fred and Green Tentacle.
Hugo? :o ;D
I don't want to spoil to much about te new endings, only this:
Syd and Razor won't have the same things to do anymore and Jeff will have his own special skill that suits his character. 8)
And yes, a talkie version of the game is also planned. First in German, cause it's our mother tongue but it's far to early to cast the voices. :-\
Quote from: Mister L on Fri 13/11/2009 21:06:14

Argh, I meant Hoagie! And I call myself a nerd.
On the subject of me being a nerd, the continuity-obsessed geek in me hopes that it'll still be possible to get the official ending that leads to Day of the Tentacle (Dave, Bernard and Razor enter the mansion, Razor makes Green Tentacle's band successful and gets the recording contract, and somewhere along the way she does something unpleasant with a hamster and a microwave).
Hmm, I don't see the point, that Greens band is so successful in Dott. ???
Obviously the band got a new name. In MM it was "G.T. and the Suction Cups," but in Dott it is "G.T. and the Sushi Platters" and they are 'too experimental' to get any airplay. Doesn't sound like a 'million $ contract'-ending to me? :-\
All I can say is: It will happen everything in our game that happend in MM. But also much, much more. :)
The golf clubs and guitar silhoutes, are those from Sam and Max?
No, from Dott. ;D

Well, that makes things simpler. Green Tentacle could still have gotten his band off the ground (to the extent that he did) without the recording contract. That means that the only thing Razor definitely did was microwave the hamster. Which reminds me: in DoTT, when microwaving the frozen hamster, Laverne warns players about what happens to kids who do that in real life. Maybe you could have Syd/Razor do the exact opposite: "Hey, kids! Microwaving hamsters is fun and awesome!" *SPLAT* "See?"
Concerning new content and puzzles, perhaps you could have a way to fix the broken staircase.

No way! :o
We consider this to be one of the gratest unrevealed secrets in adventuregame history right after the 'real' secret of Monkey Island! ;)
This is not gonna happen.
Hmm, what do you think could be up there? 8)
Hey, at least I'm not asking you to add fuel for the chainsaw.
Well, not unless Zak McKracken is a playable character. (For those who don't know, the fuel for the chainsaw is nowhere in Maniac Mansion, but turns up in Zak's game.)
Out of curiosity, will you be remixing the NES version's music? Also, which version of the title theme will you be remixing, the PC version or the NES version?
The NES-Music will appear in the game in a 'special' way. ;)
We'll use MP3-versions of the Dott-soundtrack like in MMDeluxe for most of the screens.
We want the main theme to sound a bit 'dottish' and we still have to find someone who's able to make that for us. :-\
Well, there is one guy I know of who makes music (including cover versions) for money - Andrew Pants at songstowearpantsto.com - you'd probably have to give him links to the Maniac Mansion theme song and some samples of DoTT's music in your request, of course. I'd gladly donate money (via PayPal) for such a thing.
Are you planning a web-site? If yes, when?
http://www.maniac-mansion-mania.com ;) Not really the website for this game but since DOTT-MM is a "child" of the MMM-Community... ;)
We will have our own website for the project, but I don't know when this will happen. We're putting all our energy into the development of the game now. 8)

Re: Maniac Mansion - Dott-Style (not just another remake)
The phrase in the parenthesis shows how much work you're probably putting in this game.. And I respect and understand that. I've made fan-games (1 terrible) and I'm making a remake, so just wanting to tell you the idea sounds brilliant, and with the right attitude the execution can't go bad. Just don't try to make a game to target both the "purists" and those that want to play the game and see what's new (I used a difficulty setting to do that).

I hope 'babelfish' did that right. ;D
This is just amazing ! I love Dott style and I always wanted to play Maniac Mansion but terrible graphic made it impossible.
Such a fresh and crispy yet classic looking graphic style. Even without the topic title the graphics would still have screamed "day of the tentacle". Keep up the good work.
Made a blog entry about your game at my game blog (http://mertesgameblog.wordpress.com/2009/11/24/maniac-mansion-remade-dott-style/)
Can't wait for this to get finished!
Hey, will you even add the character theme songs for people like Dave, Bernard, & The Edisons, and remix them? That would make this game perfect.
DOTT is one of the best games lucasarts ever made. :'(
Also, what does Dave look like in this game?
This is amazing.
The title screen alone had me in stitches, and the first screenies look very, very promising. I think this really could be great. As in really, really great- having the old classic in the outstanding DOTT look. Would also save me the trouble of fiddling around with DOSBox ;)
I must say this does looks very good I love the style it just reminds me more of the curse of monkey island
(The 3rd Monkey island i think). At least I got something to look forward to. Just that I hope they will
be a English version or else I am going to have learn German ;D .

Wonderful animation. Simply wonderful. ;D
Is there gonna be talk in this game, or will there just be text?
Voiceacting is on our to-do list. But first we'll release it in german language, maybe with english subtitles. An english translation would be the next step. :-\
Is there any new information on the project? Ive been keeping up with your board, and I havent seen anything new in a while.
Also, Ive noticed that there is another German team recreating MM, and will be 3d. Do you know of this one?.....Im looking forward to both, but yours looks much more polished, judging by your animations.
Anyway, keep it up, Im really pumped...Thanks
Okay, here is a quick update.
The project is going a bit slow at the moment. We're still having trouble finding help with the animations. :-[
Anyway, here is something we haven't shown before:

Ahh, you turned the scrolling storm drain room into an interesting angled piece. Very interesting approach! So far I'm quite impressed with the different angles and such you're using to spice up the original locations. Smart move!
If I could do animations, I'd gladly help you. That's an awesome photoshot there.
Mister L, please check your inbox.
Hey guys, any luck in finding help for animations?
Make that a big YES here! :D
To early to show something, but this is going to look awsome! 8)
I'm going crazy, waiting for this game. ;D
Thanks for the update. That is awesome news. ;D
Hey guys, how far have you gotten on animations? :)
Hey Egon, thanks for the interest in our game, but it's still to early to show more stuff. ;)
Fact is, that the last 3 weeks were very productive. I think we could show a techdemo or teaser this summer, but that's not a promise. ;D
Dave is now fully animated, Razor is nearly completed. 8)
By the way, we still need a talented musician who can do "dottish" music in mp3-quality, including a remix of the Maniac Mansion theme. :-*
Well, hopefully, you'll find a musician out there. I hope we'll also get to hear all the character themes, like the Edisons' theme, Dave's theme, & Bernard's theme.
BTW, speaking of Dave, could you show us any pictures of him? Even if they're just mere early sketching? Pretty please?
Well, okay an early sketch should be no problem:
BTW: Razor is now walking and talking in all directions!
I'm pretty sure, we'll have a teaser out this summer. ;)
Looking forward to the teaser. It should be awesome. ;D
Good luck in finding your musician.
Wow it looks awesome!
Try http://indiegamemusic.com/ if you're looking for a musician or music for the game.
Perhaps someone there can do DOTT music or is interested in a challenge :)
Do you guys have any more Dr. Fred pics available, or maybe any new Nurse Edna pics from the game? Also, has Dr. Fred been fully animated, yet?
Well, Dr. Fred looks almost completly like in Dott. We changed the skincolor (back) to blue, the animation will also be the same.
Here're some pictures of Edna (before we changed the skin):

This game's looking great. I'm a big LucasArts fan, but must admit that I never played Maniac Mansion (although I've played DOTT several times). This is going to be the first time I'll play Maniac Mansion! You guys really need to get a site up soon.
Hey, I was browsing for Maniac Mansion pics and I caught this project you're working on. KICK ASS!!! It looks like it'd be a blast to play. I have a question, though: Why did you chose to go with a darker shade of blue for the Edisons instead of their original cyan color?
I don't mean to be too hardcore a purist, but I colored the Edison DOTT sprites in their original colors and they looked cool. I'm sure you've done the same and I'm curious as to what prompted you to go with a different shade of blue?
Quote from: Green Suction Cup on Fri 28/05/2010 23:13:54

Time for a quick update!
We've now found the final title of our game:
Maniac Mansion - Night of the MeteorWe're still very busy working on the objects and effects and our animator still has 3 of the 7 main-characters to complete.
But we'll do it - and when it's done, you'll get the game together with this cover:

Special thanks to Sara! ;)

And, if there's a talented and willing musican out there, we still need someone for the soundtrack! :D
(http://www.bonzenmann.de/test/help.gif)
Wow! You mean there will be physical copies of the game?
No, that would be to expensive, but we'll upload a DVD-cover in high quality, so you can print it. 8)
What's about the demo?
MisterL I couldn't find it in this thread. But is there a website for the game?
A demo or teaser will come as soon as the main character-animations are done. ;)
We've no website jet. :-\
At the moment we put most of our spare time (which isn't too much) into the game-development.
You can meet us and other 'maniacs' here:

I gotta say, what you got so far looks awesome! I hope you find it rewarding enough to work with that you actually follow it through to the end. It looks incredibly promising.

great cover art and title! :D

It will most certainly be freeware! :o
Hehe, I like the idea. Even better than the 3d remake that is in progress right now :)
If you need a translator from german to english just let me know. I'd like to help out there ;)
Really excited about this! I'm so glad I stumbled upon this while looking for the phantom speech pack for deluxe.
May I suggest creating two modes for the game? One that has all the death and mayhem of the original plus a warning if the game becomes unwinnable and one without death and unwinnability. I like the low frustration of the later deathless failure-free LucasArts games too, but death in the original Maniac Mansion is just too hilarious to leave out of the game, plus you could do something with a "ghost" kid or have the dead kid's stuff be transferred to his/her next of kid (or still be usable). Just a suggestion. This sounds like it will be special either way.
Here's a list of all the deaths possible at least with the NES version that I can remember:
Drown in the radioactive pool
Open the microwave after heating up a jar of radioactive water
Explode Weird Ed's hamster and return it to him
Get Sid/Razor a record contract and show it to Green Tentacle
Enter the Meteor's room without a radiation suit
Forget to turn the power on/refill the pool
Push the red button
Fail to get rid of the Meteor on time
Play a tape of the tentacle mating call to Green Tentacle (what does he do to you?!)

I like the 2 modes, or the warnings, or the "try again". A definitive death is so frustrating.

In 'Maniac Mansion Deluxe' the stuff of the dead kids turned up in a parcel in front of the gravestone, free to be picked up. 8)
We decided not to use dead-ends or the death of characters, because our game is much longer, has more items, more puzzles and more solutions than the original game. Would be too frustrating to go thru all this just beause of a minor mistake at the beginning. :-\
But we'll have 'near-dead' sequences. Instead of dying we'll show some cartoon violence. ;D
And be assured, all of the orinigal death-scenes will show up (some way). ;)

Will there be extra plotlines and endings?
I don't want to spoil too much, but yes there will be extra plotlines and endings. ;)
In the original Maniac Mansion, every ending corresponded to one of the characters (Syd and Razor shared an ending, while Dave and Jeff don't have their own endings). How will the new endings be included? Will Dave and Jeff have their own endings? In fact, will Dave and Jeff actually have unique uses? And will Syd and Razor play differently to each other?
Well, if I would tell you how the new endings will look like, I would spoil too much. :-\
But yes, every character will have an unique ending and Syd and Razors tasks won't be the same any more.
We try to stay very close to the original but we want to give everyone a good reason to play the game with every possible team-constellation, even if they know Maniac Mansion inside out.
It'll be worth it, I promise! ;D
I'm very much looking forward to this game. ;D
Do you plan to release a demo?
Sounds fantastic. This is gonna be big. It's gonna be like on TV and stuff. And I don't mean like that show with Joe Flaherty, bigger than that.

Hmm, you're right. In the first release of Maniac Mansion Deluxe they used the color from the original '89 game. But in the later versions (1.3 or 1.4 I think) this light purple color was used. 8)

In every version of Maniac Mansion I've played, I was able to go into the kitchen early, and as soon as I see Nurse Edna, I run away from her and when I reach the door, she warps back to her room. Is this going to be the same or similar?
I played some versions where you can't use that trick. She remains in the kitchen for a couple minutes and the only way to get her to move is to sacrifice one of the kid.

I think I know every version of the game and you can always escape Edna by running away quick enough. 8)
It's not going to be exactly the same in our game, but we'll have a similar scene. :)
You guys really need to get a site up!
Mister L: Yes, you can escape her by running away, but she'll remains in the kitchen. If you want to make her go away from the kitchen so you can steal the cheese before Ed do so, you must sacrifice a kid.
Don't ask me which of the 5 version does that. In fact, I'm not even sure sacrificing a kid make her go away. She could remains in there until her timer runs out. But I know it pissed me off greatly because I was used to one of the versions where when she's in the kitchen, you make her run after you, leave the kitchen, enter again and she's gone, back in her bedroom.
Say, are you gonna improve the role of the secondary kids in your remake? It always bothered me that 95% of the puzzles could be solved by any kids and the only time their unique skills were useful was for a couple puzzles to deal with the purple tentacle, fix the phone or microwave the hamster.
And now I wonder if one of the kid will get tied to Edna's bed post this time.
I don't think I shoud spoil more than I already did. Fact is, there will be a lot more to do for all playable characters. 8)
As long as it involves her taking you to her room, tying you up and then breaking out the black leather and whips just like the original...
Oh wait, that's just wishful thinking. I'm sure Ron Gilbert and co would've done something like that if they'd been able to, though ^_^.
Heya :)
Just wanted to say that I really like the artwork that you have posted. It looks really well drawn and definatly D.O.T.T.ish. I really like the idea behind this. I wish you the best of luck in getting it done. I did have a question tho... Are you using the original style Layout of the Mansion or a Style more similar to the "Motel" version in D.O.T.T. as the structual Layout? I just always thought it was wierd that in the 2 games the Mansion didn't match up. I Randomly came across this in a search for Zak Mckracken stuff, and you know how that goes, Zak leads you to think of the gas can... which makes you think of the chainsaw, which before you notice you've been playing Maniac Mansion for days :) . Oh the nostalgia. HAHAHA. That would be cool too, a D.O.T.T. style Alien Mindbenders :P . But anyway, Back on topic. ***Spoiler Part for D.O.T.T. if you haven't played it*** Whats a good thing about this game, is that in D.O.T.T. They talk about Maniac Mansion being a game. You know the whole contract signing part, and the copy of the game in Eds room. Its almost like you could do the whole Re-telling of the "Actual Story" with your version of it. ***Spoiler End*** So i think your possiblities of things could be endless to do with this. Sounds like a great idea, and already good work :). Good Luck, and I'm looking forward to playing your game.

We use the original MM-style layout of the mansion.
I think they had to change the rooms for 'Dott', because MM had more (or completly different) rooms than Dott needed. I was pleased that some items from the original still appeared in Dott like the 'grandfather-clock' and of course 'Chuck the plant'.
I was also pleased when i saw 'Chuck the plant' in TellTales 'Tales of Monkey Island'! ;D
And we'll meet that plant again in our remake. :)
No pressure,
but if you don't finish that game I'll kill you, cut your ears and penis, eat them with mint sauce, rape your dead body, burn your house, rape your dead body again, kill your dog, cast a voodoo spell on your entire family for the next 25 generations. I also consider doing the same thing to your dog's dead body as I'd do with yours.
No pressure.

Hi. I'm new and your project is exactly what adventure game's fans need. I have a few questions:
1. Do you know Broken Sword series? German fans made their own sequel of this game: BROKEN SWORD 2.5 and they even engaged actor Alexander Schottky as George Stobbartt voice (he used his voice as George in all Broken Swords parts) .
Maybe you will be able to engage German voice actors from DOTT: Dietmar Walbeck as dr. Fred etc. Maybe he would agree to play again dr. Fred. What do you think?
2. Do you remember family portret that is hanging over the fireplace? Maybe in remake you would use it: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FbFu1YBZ-Hw/TA36kBcVS8I/AAAAAAAAAho/TIHIPEkJRS4/s1600/Edisons.jpg
3. How much percent did you make?

I think you're right! ;D
1.) Sure we know "Baphomets Fluch 2.5". It's a great game!
In fact I was trying to find 'Dietmar Walbeck' over the internet, but he seems hard to catch. On the other hand, we're not jet ready to
cast any voiceactors.
2.) We know that portrait very well, but we won't use it in our game. It just doesn't fit the Dott-style.
3.) All I can say is, that the backgrounds are done and I think we'll have the standard-views of the main characters ready this summer.
There will be about 17 full animated characters in the final game and our programmer has already scripted some pretty neat effects
that I've never seen on any other AGS-Game. 8)
AND WE'RE STILL LOOKING FOR A TALENTED MUSICIAN!
If you're willing to pay for someone to make music for you, this site (http://indiegamemusic.com) will help you find someone, although not everyone may be willing to do a cover version (that is, a new version of an existing song). They'll all be eager to do entirely new songs, though. And, of course, as I suggested before, there's also Songs To Wear Pants To (http://songstowearpantsto.com/), which makes both new songs and cover versions. And again, I'll gladly donate money if you end up having to pay for music.
Why pay when it would be such an honor for any musician to make music for that remake!

We still have much time before we must have the music.
Someday we'll find the right person. Or he/she will find us! ;D

Well... Yes! ;)
Our leading background artist is currently pushing most of the screens to a higher qualtity level.
We're also planing to put up our own website soon.

There's still much work to do, so if anyone likes to join us... 8)
Looks absoulately AMAZING! ;D
I want to play this game so bad. :D
Love Sid's shoes, btw! :)
...and there I was thinking I had mastered the DOtT-style (for backgrounds) pretty well. Looking back at my efforts I was already disappointed at my own results. Your background artist has done an amazing job! (as has your character artist) Keep it up! Please!...
Good to hear - and see - things are progressing! The original version of that location looked great already - but now it looks even more awesome! Keep up the good work!
Sid's grin there sells the character design.

That's really fucking cool. I'm looking forward the website and the completed game. ;)
Perhaps I can contribute in between times some music-files. ;) Do you want to use midis or mp3s?
Do you want to integrate Hoagie and Laverne, too?

Have you tried contacting adventuredevelopers.com ? They probably will offer some server space for this.
Btw, this looks amazing.
(And I never played the original.)
Be careful if you have antialisaed objects in the foreground (the black golf clubs) because the characters can't be antialised the same way, so it might look awkward when they walk there. I'd advise to test the result before extending that practice to every room.
@ 1mal_volltanken:
Hoagie and Laverne will not appear (at least not as main caracters). Remember, they meet the Edisons in Dott for the first time.

Here's a small update in which we show a new animation from the game:
http://www.night-of-the-meteor.de/en/news
The up walkcycle is excellent. The right walkcycle is a bit robotic (almost looks like he's kicking his leg forward) but it works.
Edit: Since you've asked me for tips before, I've posted my edit to the right of the original to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Basically I just made the movement of the arms and legs smoother and brought the leg all the way down on a down step. I also made him bob up and down naturally. The head turning left and right is purely optional and something I did just to see how it would look.

I must say, the new animation looks really good! :D
The problem is, that we considered Dave as finished, all other wiews are already done, especially the walk-views where he holds the flashlight. :-[
Maybe we'll rework our current animation, but not at this point. :-[
Thanks for your effort! :)
How about a Dr. Fred image or animation?
The animation of Dr.Fred will be almost the same as in Dott. We only changed the face a bit (and the color of cause). ;)

Hi, we need some help!

It is a bit hard to understand... :-[
You can listen to it here:
http://www.televisiontunes.com/Maniac_Mansion.html
hey MisterL.
It is very hard to understand. After listening to it, this is what I *think* it is, but I'm probably wrong. :P
------------------------------
In the family gene
There is a centre of the dream.
To brave the sand-sharp sweet \ suite.
Taking chances, yet know
The highest moment will take loft (not sure about this line).
And right before our eyes will take happiness and peace of mind.
Maniac Mansion. Maniac Mansion.
The Eddison's family dream.
Maniac Mansion. Maniac Mansion.
That's so me.
I think I got most of it:
In the family gene
There is a glimmer of a dream.
To bravely sail uncharted seas
Taking chances, ooh yeah (something?)
The highs and lows, we'll take the lot
And right before our eyes (something, maybe divine. Or: right before I survive?)
I get some peace of mind.
Maniac Mansion. Maniac Mansion.
The Eddison's family dream.
Maniac Mansion. Maniac Mansion.
That's our dream (or game?)
With a few other suggestions, you'll maybe get there in the end!
Wow, thanks for the quick help! :D
It really is hard to understand!
Ok, I just finished MMD!! I'm ready to translate this, hahaha :D
I can't wait! I loved DOTT
Mister L, in case you want another set of ears on it, here's my take:
In the family genes
(There is) a glimmer of a dream
To bravely sail uncharted seas
Taking chances ooh yeah (the ...)
the highs and lows we'll take the lot.
and right before our eyes
we'll find happiness and peace of mind.
Maniac Mansion, Maniac Mansion
The Eddison family dream
Maniac Mansion, Maniac Mansion
that's (so ideal)
Let us know if you ever find out the official version, would be nice to know who was most accurate. ;D
Help is always welcome! :D
Maybe we should try to locate the singer (if she's still in the business) ;D
I heard the very last line as "that's our theme."

Just so you know, in the Maniac Mansion universe, the TV series was made after the events of Maniac Mansion. It's mentioned in DoTT. But now that I've listened to the theme, it'd be brilliant if you could work it in somehow, maybe as the end credits theme. But if you're planning on having it be the opening theme instead of the PC of NES version's opening theme, or putting it somewhere else... if you handle it well, and juxtapose it with the twisted setting, it could turn out to be pure comedic genius!
So, have you guys been able to pick back up on things?
Hi there, we're back from the TED! ;D

The trailer's looking great! I only have one concern. Some of the dialog (especially in the beginning) stays on screen for an extenuated amount of time. Will this be the case with the final game? I feel like I'd go crazy!
Seriously though, Maniac Mansion and Zak Mckracken are the only two Lucasfilm/LucasArts (point & click) games I've never played through (though I've owned both for years.) With your game, I'm looking forward to completing Maniac Mansion for the first time. Then, I'll go back and play the original.

No, in the game you can always skip the text on one mouseclick. ;)
Just one word: F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C :o
Unglaublich cool und schön, gab mir sofort das gleiche Gefühl wie die ursprüngliche Version.
Cool new characters, can't wait to see the whole story and play the game!
You really captured very well the atmosphere of BOTH maniac mansion (with that B movies feeling) AND Day of the T. (with those funny graphics and silly humor).
The graphics are gorgeous and the dialogs are witty.
That is really really really HIGH quality. Well done. Fantastic.
While Maniac Mansion is one of my favorite games, I have to say I wasn't very hyped about this. Shame on me. This video really proves this is like Maniac Mansion but also plus. You've got a hardcore fan, sir.
So good! Love the trailer!
Looks awesome!
Like grim said, I also found myself clicking on the trailer in the hope to skip to the next line of text.
Might be a good idea to shorten the time the text appears on screen in the trailer. This will also help to make the trailer shorter, 7.5 minutes is way above the average trailer length (which is ~2 minutes as far as I know).
Awesome stuff!
There's a little contrast between the revised MM characters and the borrowed-from-DOTT characters, but it's not too offensive.
The backgrounds look perfect!
Agree with others here, it looks awesome. The backgrounds are spot on! :o
Looks awesome - and sounds awesome, too! Is that actual ingame music? Either way, it's great. I really laughed at some of the humorous dialogue and the movie-like taglines (great idea, btw). The new-old characters stand out a little as less caricatural compared to the DOTT characters - but I guess it works, no need to make hot girls look more distorted like, say, Laverne.
All in all, an AWESOME job!
AUSGEZEICHNET!

This tune is nice, but it's really an overused free-domain tune. I believe it's actually used in toonstruck, for example.
And Maniac Mansion deserves kick-ass, original tunes! (considering how many musicians athere ar ein the forums, I'd recommand posting your MIDI in the Critics Lounge I'm sure within hours there will be plenty of amazing new versions)
I really like the look of this game, I will admit. The trailer was done in the best way imaginable to get me interested; parodying B-movies is always great. I kind of wish the Edisons hadn't been blue, as this reflects the NES version of Maniac Mansion, but I think I understand why you went this direction. The best of luck with this!

Why I dislike the NES version and most things associated. (http://www.crockford.com/wrrrld/maniac.html)
Jepp, the NES-version had many cuts was was heavily censored, but the blue color for the edisons was first used in the enhanced version for PC, Amiga and Atari ST.
I first played MM on the C-64 but I really like the more creepy blue color now - feels a bit like "The Munsters". ;D
We also think, that this color has something do to with all the radioactivity in the mansion or/and the presence of the Meteor. We'll keep it that way. 8)
That trailer was fantastic, I love the mansion's new look, it's so spot on between B horror movies and Chuck Jones that all that's missing is Scooby-Doo.
I am sooooooo hyped, keep up the good work! :D
Personal opinion: Maniac Mansion was a good game, but I think we already have enough re-makes, de-makes and fan-makes to last several lifetimes. I can see this project has potential but a lot of it seems wasted on makin remakes when it could be directed at creating original games.
Sorry for being so negative...

No problem - it's your opinion. :)
But we have so many new and funny ideas to bring MM back to life, maybe you'll think different about it when our work is done! 8)
Another thing to consider is that if they were to release the characters as .cha files afterward (many of the sprites were borrowed from the CL or DoTT, anyway) they could be used for the maniac mansion mania series, or indeed, for a fan sequel or spin-off. As some of the sprites used are modified versions of ones I made I'd personally like to see something like that happen and would even consider making a fan game of sorts, myself.

I assume you've already played MM, and the game was quite hardcore considering how strange some puzzles were (with very limited clues), and considering the time limit.
I think a remake could make the game much less frustrating, by clarifying or developing some stuff, like it seems they did in the trailer, and a bit the way AGDi did with the King's Quest series.
Do you guys happen to have any Dr. Fred .gif's from the game?
Um, what for? ???
The ingame-animations are in *.png, would be no problem zu transform them to gif - but why? :-\

This project looks fantastic, and it's something I've often dreamed of seeing or even making myself since I first played the games back in middle school. You guys have done an outstanding job meeting the high artistic standards set by DOTT.
As far as music, since the original PC version didn't have much, might I recommend basing your score on the NES version, which, for all of its problems, had quite a bit of very nice music?
This YouTube account has a lot of it up for listening:

And some MIDIs are here, which may be useful for you or whoever ends up doing the music, as you can fiddle with them or use the notes as the basis for something more complex:

The music is great. I started laughing at how closely it resembles DOTT. If I may offer a suggestion, though, I'd make the melody louder. During my first listen, I couldn't even hear the resemblance between the original MM theme and this. The second time, I could just barely make it out.
Hi, Mister L. How has the progress been going?
I'd like to play DOTT-style than MM Deluxe! Thanks)
Love MM! I first played it on a C64 and didn't finish it. I played it for countless hours though. When did they change the evil characters to look blue or green? I remember seeing this game on Nintendo and they were tinted along with no hamster in the micro - I really thought that was a slap in the face. Hope you will keep it as close to the roots as possible.
That being said - Looks like you are doing a heck of a job. I really dig the dott draw style. The vids look amazing.
Hey when all is done would you think of making a Zak remake?
Anything new going on with the production? Update?
Just a quick update:
We're still working on the project - at the moment it's going kinda slow, but the game is alive and kicking! 8)
Oh, by the way. Here's a new background to admire: ;)

Hey folks, here is a small life sign from our projcet! :)
We're all very busy with our real life issues and the work is going slow - but we're still at it! 8)
Check out our website, for some screens we had to throw away, cause they were no longer up to standards.

[hint]Wish I could see the new ones compared to the outdated ones[/hint] ;)
I have a feeling I'm not the first person to say this, but that trailer is a thing of beauty. PLEASE keep it up! I've been playing adventure games since I was a kid and still haven't gotten all the way through Maniac Mansion, but now I'm SUPER excited to play it again.
So, Mister L, how's the progress been going?
moderator
Dr. Spengler - You didn't technically break the rules (in 2 days you would have) so I'm not layin' down the law here... but this is (just going back a few pages) the 7th time you've dug this thread up to ask for a status update. How about sending a PM to the author next time or just let him/her update this thread it when they're ready to? :)
fan
Since it's been dug up anyway ... I wouldn't mind an update on the progress either!
Whoops. :o
Well, thanks for the interest guys. I wish we could update this thread more often.
We're still making progress, but it goes veeeeeery slow at the moment. :-[
Our new main problem is: Our lead-animator hasn't got the time anymore to complete the last walk-animations of the remaining 2 characters.
So if there is anyone out there who can handle cartoon-animations in the "day of the tentacle style" - please let us know! :-*

Great remake! I hope you all work wisely on the puzzles, as the Deluxe one had some fails as Ron Gilbert said (he played it and found a nice remake, but with that problem).
What about translating? I may help with Spanish translation :)
I'll be happy to help you out with those walk animations, MisterL. Since a couple of the characters you use were taken right from my DoTT template it should be no problem!
Could you post a Dr. Fred GIF or animation?
This looks amazing. You have already been offered, but let me know if you still need any help translating the game into spanish (from the english version) or proof-reading it.

You have already asked this on several occasions. And it has been replied to.

Do you guys have any more Dr. Fred pics available, or maybe any new Nurse Edna pics from the game? Also, has Dr. Fred been fully animated, yet?
Quote from: Mister L on Mon 10/05/2010 20:28:50Well, Dr. Fred looks almost completly like in Dott. We changed the skincolor (back) to blue, the animation will also be the same.

Will you
please stop digging up this thread. Your enthusiasm is admirable but for those of us waiting for word on this game it's annoying to see it show up on page 1 only to find out it's just another Dr. Spengler bump. You aren't breaking the rules, so I'm not going all moderator here (other than trying to keep this thread less cluttered), I'm just asking! See? I asked it like 3 posts above;

i can't serve you with Dr. Freds currently state, but there is short interview up here -> http://jcwigriff.com/2012/03/23/interview-with-edison-interactive-about-maniac-mansion-remake/

Nurse Edna is currently under construction again. 8)
I know it's an old topic but for people who haven't checked the site in recent times. They have uploaded a new screenshot on their website (Oct 18th was the update). Nice use of the flashlight there. Hopefully, Mister L/anyone on the project can help shed some light on how the project is coming along (seeing how the last update was on late March)
Enjoy
**sigh** Just when I thought people finally understood...
nads - do not do this again.
Mister L - if/when YOU feel like updating this thread let me know and I'll unlock it!

Hi Folks!
The project was not doing well the last few month, but now we're "Back from the Ted" and the past two weeks were very productive.
We added a bunch of (quite funny) character animations to the game - but it's still much more to do! (http://www.maniac-mansion-mania.de/forum/Smileys/mmm-smileys/undecided.gif)
We could need more help in the animations department.
Maybe there is someone out there who want's to work really hard for free? - Let us know! (http://www.maniac-mansion-mania.de/forum/Smileys/mmm-smileys/grin.gif)
Great news - best of luck for this wonderful project!
Great news! :)
WOnderful to hear :)
We just added sprite number
5000 into "Night of the Meteor" and since our adventure remake has seven playable characters many, many sprites must follow!
We could still use some help with all the wonderfull animations this game deserves! (http://www.maniac-mansion-mania.de/forum/Smileys/mmm-smileys/kiss.gif)
If anyone wants to join our team, feel free to drop us a note.
Congrats! I am looking forward to this. I Wish I could help, but the only thing I could offer is Italian Translation and to tell you the truth... I wouldn't have much time for that. If you are desperate though, let me know.
Hey folks, we're still in business!
We've just imported the 6,666th sprite - and it's just sick ;)
Check out our website to see...
...well extactly the same! :-D

This is good news!!! Love that this project is still going!
Bt
is the pleasure given by the game proportional to the number of sprites the game contains? Nope. It's exponential in your case :D
NOW HURRY UP AND FINISH THAT GAME.
PS: sorry I never got to finish the hamster animation. But I was very proud to see that you showcased the microwave on the website 8-)

No problem. By the way: The hamster was sitting helpless in the microwave yesterday, it was slowly breathing and it kept looking at me with his big sad eyes...

Are you saying that someone did finish that animation? :D If yes, so cool!
I've just sent a "microwave exploding" animation to Mister L. I hope nobody did the same animation in the mean time!
Good to hear that, keep up the good work.
Just out of interested, is sprite number 6666 more like 20% of what you are aiming for, or like 50% or even like 90% or the sprites needed?

It's already 125% The Number Of Teh Beast! (laugh)
Glad to see this is still in the making. Can't wait for it to see the light of day (I have set up a triple exorcism already, just in case. You WON'T need 666.666.666 sprites, right?)

We can't give you a number. But we're propably still far away from 90% :( There are lots of animations that still have to be done (and since we have seven playable characters many animations have to be done seven times ).
I even can't tell you if we've already reached the 50% mark for animation work (I hope so - but I've no idea how complex some of the stuff will turn out that's lying ahead of us).
But while there are still tons of animations lying ahead of us - most of the background work is done.

So great to hear you guys are making headway!
That 'illegal' screenshot , several posts above, fuels my imagination and gives me the same tingly pleasure
as staring at the back of those game boxes back in the days!
The game is making progress, at the moment there are 8128 sprites in the game.
Since most of the animations have to be done seven times (one version for each kid) there is still much work to do in the animation department. So we're always looking for help with animations.
To fasten thinks up we also could use somebody who is interested in creating a cutscene (such as the Edsel flying away, the house exploding, ... something that can be created separately and independent from the rest of the game) that will require animation, background and scripting work.
So if anyone reading this can spare some time and is interested, just write me a PM. Thanks!

This looks absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!
I've seen many people do a recreation retro-style of an old game but I have NEVER seen anyone attempt to update an old-school game and bump it up to the level of its sequel!!!
Seriously guys...If this gets finished...You MUST find a way to directly send it to Lucas himself!!!
He was always the guy with the big LUCAS stamp that had to be on
everything until it made it through to the final production, so you gotta KNOW he played and replayed DOTT until it was just right...
You guys just may be able to get him to reopen LucasArts Adventure Games for this one release...
If only you could break into Skywalker Ranch somehow:

Umm... Actually, I'm fairly certain I've heard/read in interviews of various former LucasArts employees that George Lucas had virtually nothing to do with the gaming department, possibly barring some Star Wars titles. I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt George Lucas has ever played DOTT for even a minute in his life. Hell, he probably wouldn't even know what it was if you mentioned it to him. Perhaps I'm just being cynical, I don't know.
On a side note, a LA employee mentioned in an interview shortly after the shutdown that they actually had been working on an enhanced DOTT (like the Monkey Island remakes), and that it was well-underway.

I was going to make a similar comment. From what I've read, Lucas would stop by once in a great while, but was mostly hands off. Stephen Spielberg was more involved with dropping by to see what was going on and to see what games were in production. I believe that there was some game design related decisions that had to go to Lucas himself for ultimate approval - like the fact that Indy could die in the Indy adventure games. Lucas probably had very little if nothing to do with DOTT as it was not connected to any of his film material such as Star Wars or Indiana Jones.
Spielberg is the one who played adventure games, not Lucas.

Good... now we can go back to talking about this game in production...

There had been some progess, but not as much as it had been in the first half of this year. Around 500 more sprites have found their way into the game since last update. Most work was bugfixing and working on details.
There is still much more help needed in the animation department. Some guys have contributed some amazing animation work - but especially animation work is very slow at the moment.
fischkopf - please read the forum rules before digging up any more threads!
The characterization of personages to the DOT style are clean.
I look at them and i think: this is how it would be! Amazing!
DOnT sTOP!
Just have two word to say about this.
Gorgeous

We had a small update recently on our website:

As always, we could use more help with the animations... ;)

"Don't forget the stamps!"
I was just checking here for news a few hours back :)
Awesome it's still in production and progressing!
Glad to see this is still going.
Great to know this is still being worked on. :cheesy:
Maniac Mansion is my all-time favourite game
Keep up the good work, Mister L & I will help you with a translation ;)
