Nelly Cootalot II: The Fowl Fleet

The Story
Pirate heroine Nelly Cootalot is on the trail of Baron Widebeard, from the South Seas to the icy north. The nefarious Baron has kidnapped a fleet of birds and hypnotised them to do his bidding. What is he planning? Can he be stopped? In what way is a frozen volcano involved? These questions may or may not be answered as Nelly uncovers the secret of William Bloodbeard's final voyage.

This game is a sequel to Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! It will be a commercial release, bigger than the original with richer graphics, more remote islands to visit and many outlandish characters to meet. It will also be both pointier and clickier.

In this game, Nelly will heroically:
  • Race aristocrats for fun and profit
  • Be immortalised in folk song
  • Join the Merchant Navy *shudder*
  • Pilot an airship.
  • Uncover Bloodbeard's Lost Treasure
  • Take advantage of a short-sighted old man
  • Lie to strangers with no consequences

Crowdfunding Campaign
In order to complete this game, I am throwing myself bodily upon the crowdfunding bandwagon. The campaign is now live: Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet Kickstarter! I'm now working on a playable demo, so watch out for updates on Nelly's website, and by following Nelly on Twitter and Facebook.

History
I released the original Nelly game in 2007, if the word 'original' can be applied to a pirate-themed adventure game. Back then no one on the AGS forums could grow a beard and 640x480 was considered hi-res. These days the forums are thronged with facial hair, and 640x480 is still considered hi-res.

Since 2007 I have been gradually working on this sequel, beset by jobs and distracting noises. Now I feel like I have reached the point of no return. I'm hoping a crowdfunding campaign will give me the push I need to complete the game, and stop having to think up nautical puns on the bus.

Please let me know your thoughts!

Haggis

This looks absolutely stonking (good way)!

Love the detail and the speech bubbles look great. Is that a tree or a mast in the first pic?

CaptainD

This looks very, very, very good!  I remember playing the original game several years ago.

miguel

This does look fantastic. The first one had a very professional feel like no other AGS title back then. And those screenshots look awesome!
Good luck with this!
Working on a RON game!!!!!

Stupot

Looks beautiful, Ali. And the website equally so. Good luck mate.

LTGiants2000

Amazing Graphics, I must say...wow. This looks very promising!

Grim

Are you making use of that lovely parallax/smooth scrolling module you'd made for the first game?

cat

Looking great! Is there going to be a soundtrack as great as the first game's one? Also, hooray for voice acting!

Armageddon

Snarky

Gosh!

Keep working and take my money!

Love the graphics. Though we've seen some WIP art over the years, it's clear that these screens are much more polished. The crown of that palm tree in the first screen is so cool! (There are more screens on the web page, for those who didn't visit yet.) There's no way we can talk you out of that shadow effect around the corners, is there?

And of course, the writing, which just in this announcement beats that of many games. There are too many promising AGS projects out there to say that this is the one I'm looking forward to the most, but secretly it is.

They look absolutely gorgeous, Ali!
Is there any chance of seeing some short in-game footage, or isn't it at that stage yet?
Much energy for this ambitious project!

Igor Hardy

Great to see some new stuff and hear you're still working hard on the game. I was worried because of not finding any Nelly news at the forums for a while (besides the cameo in appearance in AdventureX 2012 logo).

Ali

Thanks for the feedback! To answer your questions:

It's a mast supporting a cable car in the screen above.

Are you making use of that lovely parallax/smooth scrolling module you'd made for the first game?

Yes, I'm using the smooth scrolling module. And I'm working on tweaking it to create a seasickness inducing undulation for when you're on a ship.

No! But you will be able to disable it in the menu. I love the way the vignette works on scrolling backgrounds, but perhaps it's too strong on the beach screen...

That stage is not far off. I'm hoping to release a short demo in the not-too-distant future.

Fantastic Ali! This all feels mighty adventure-y!

Eagerly awaiting the demo to see this nice pics "in motion" - looks pretty cool  :cheesy:

Grundislav

Looking really nice!  Glad this is progressing and will see the light of day.

Ilyich

It would be stating the obvious to say that the art design is utterly splendid, but it so is! Beautiful, detailed, unique. And I like how it retains many of the cool visual quirks of the first game, while seriously improving upon every aspect. It would be wrong not to charge people for a game that looks like that. :) Best of luck with the game and it's forthcoming money-grabbing campaign, looking forward to both! :D

veryweirdguy

This looks great! I remember loving the first one (might even have to play it again in anticipation of this!) Good work, hope your campaign goes well (I will most certainly contribute if I can!)

DBoyWheeler

Wow!  So far so good on this!  Good luck with this sequel!

Cool! The original was a lot of fun. Pirates are awesome! AAARRR!! Maybe throw in a cameo by Ocean Spirit Denis as some sort of Easter egg?

Looking forward to this.
Only problem is that my own lifetime project also features airships and vast amounts of lying to strangers with no consequences.

The same moment I had this seemingly brilliant idea for a pirate game, you've posted the news of Nelly sequel. I guess I can be glad Nelly II is (more or less) approaching completion ;)

So true :)

For me, Nelly is one of the faces of AGS. I have very fond memories of playing Spoonbeaks Ahoy!. Also, I'm a fool for all things marine, so this is going to be a must play x 2.

EDIT: What's the resolution? Judging from these screenshots it must be hi-res (640x480 :D ) at least?

Great official stuff, nice one Ali! Only took you a year and 3 months to get your shit together ;) But I'm glad you have announced it. It's looked great and felt very promising ever since 'wobbling interior' demo. Rachel voice acting FTW!!

Ghost

I. Am. In. Love. With those screenshots. Really, really unique and sweet. Did you drop the "sailor outfit", though- the one from the demo?

I'm afraid it's unintentional! Any references you spot to Monkey Island are accidental plagiarism, pure and simple.

Quote from: StillInThe90s on Sun 03/03/2013 01:15:13

It means the success or failure of the crowdfunding campaign will influence whether I can do voice acting or not. I really hope I will be able to voice the game, though.

Quote from: Kasander on Sun 03/03/2013 02:45:19

It's a shockingly large 800x600 pixels (though the backdrops are 800x650). That was pretty big when I started the game, honestly! Since the backgrounds are mostly complete, I think it's too late to go HD on this one!

The characters are 3D, but cel shaded. I still like the way they look in true 3d (see below), but everyone I spoke to felt the cel shaded look worked better. And I think they were right!

Voice acting for the original game is a stretch goal. The Fowl Fleet will definitely be voiced if we meet our target. Thanks for pointing out the confusion!

cat

Ah, thanks for clarifying (I should have read it more carefully). In this case I'll back it, of course!

Maybe you should add the voiceacting to the features section, too?

Peder 🚀

Backed, I might up my pledge too if my finances allow it before the end :).

I think you can use a credit card OR a debit card, if that helps? Kickstarter doesn't support Paypal, unfortunately. But if the campaign gets near its goal I'll consider adding a Paypal option.

Eric

Are UK-based Kickstarters not done through Amazon as well? I'm going to be backing this ASAP. Loved the first game, and the second one looks lovely. I'll see about steering some attention from my current KS campaign to you as well sometime during the next few weeks!

Today is the real-life Nelly's birthday! So if you've been waiting for an opportunity to share this campaign with your wealthy Uncle - this might be it!

Nelly's Birthday Update!

The campaign looks healthy, but I'm not going to start buying monocles and top hats (yet). I must say, I didn't expect to be competing with all my childhood heroes in the form of Armikrok, Massive Chalice and Vampyre Story!

Ha ha, yeah wth is with all the adventure game kickstarters, plus there's bundles with adventure games as well?! But still, good luck.

Oh, and happy brithday to RL Nelly.

Indeed! Happy birthday to Nelly!

I was just saying the other day that there should be an external site that was a schedule of forthcoming Kickstarters. It would be easier to plan both your budget as a backer, and release dates as a campaign runner.

Looks absolutely great! I really love the BG artwork in this game... very original and pretty. Also, love how you kept the look/style of the first game, while changing it up enough to make it look better and distinguish the two. I surely need to buy/play this game. Great job mate! Though I have been sort of "lurking" the forum for a while (namely when something goes wrong w/ AGS and I need help) I had never made an account on the forum... so this is my first post... In-case your wondering, "who the hell is this guy?"

Anyway, keep it up man... great stuff indeed.

Ali

Thanks again for the nice comments and pledges!

I thought you might be interested in The Latest Update which is an illustrated tour of the game's locations. Ben - we'll go into more detail about budget breakdown when (and if) stretch goals come into play. In general though, we're going for the bare minimum to finish the game.

We've recently had some twitter support from Revolution Software (Broken Sword), Ragnar Tornquist (Dreamfall) and Duncan Jones (Director of Moon and Source Code) as well as several generous AGSers. Which is lovely, thanks!

Cool, thanks Ali.

I'm impressed by all the gaming legends, but getting some Duncan Jones attention is really cool! Did you tell him his dad was great in The Nomad Soul?

Snarky

While it's doing decently well, and looks set to reach its goal, I really feel like this campaign would deserve to be at ten times its current sum. I guess it's more niche than I imagined. I hope the hype pays off!

Crimson Wizard

Okay, I witnessed a part of gameplay while looking into technical problem, and it looks really cool. I won't reveal anything though :P

Stupot

Here's my prediction. I think the numbers will remain fairly level for the next week or two, and it might start looking a bit close in the last week, but then there will be a big surge in the last few days and could well reach 20-25 grand.

Unfortunately, I can't afford to back right now, but I have been trying to help spread the word. I will certainly buy the game when it is released though.

Thanks muchly, chums! I really appreciate people spreading the word!

@Snarky: I agree, I am worth so much more aren't I?

@Ben: I didn't mention Nomad Soul! Is it good? I've been wondering about playing it... I Duncan Jones woul'd give us a chance because it's a retro game, and I went to the same film school as him (not at the same time though, otherwise I'd definitely totally be as successful as he is probably).

@Crimson Wizard: Thanks! And thanks for helping me get the demo to a nearly-releasable state.

Hello! In the Latest Update I've release a playable demo of Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet. It's a very short taster of the game.

Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet Demo

Let me know what you think!

- Al

selmiak

funny stuff.
but are you serious? 600MB for this really short demo?
also when switching the tags on the box nelly keeps on walking against the box for some time before doing the thing.
Other than that I like it, funny already but a bit very short ;)

Ali

The unzipped file-size is because the sprites aren't compressed. While I'm trying to work on the game's performance I thought it best to disable compression. It is a bit chunky, but there's not much in there which isn't in the game - no extra rooms or characters I promise!

I hope it wasn't too short. More of the game is currently playable, but it's missing several animations and key actions. I thought it better to release a polished little taster like this, rather than a longer pre-alpha full of placeholders.

Thanks for spotting the weird walky thing!

kaput

The server all agser.me sites are hosted on is currently having some issues, hopefully it will be back online soon. I'm however uploading the demo to AGSA so just in case it happens again it will still be available on AGSA.

cat

Nice demo! But please make an option in the game to disable the ship going up and down, I really got seasick!

Ali

Hello!

Just a reminder that we've entered our final week currently at 91% funded. Thanks to Peder for mirroring the demo. And Cat - rest assured that the seasickness will be optional!

If you're interested in the development side of things, I've been interviewed by the loveable guys at BigSushi.fm: http://bigsushi.fm/episode-78-alasdair-beckett-king/

Eric

I am disgusted with the entire world that this isn't funded yet. I upped my pledge yesterday and will probably kick in some add-ons before all is said and done.

Stupot

I have a feeling it will be all right as far as the main goal is concerned. There is almost always a surge in the last few days. But it might be worth urging backers to up their pledge as Eric has done.  If only a handful of people do that each day, it will be enough to drag Nelly over the line.

Great news for a landlubber like me :)

Darth Mandarb

I'm shocked too.  I thought this project would blow through the initial goal!  I upped my pledge as well and will kick in a bit extra if/when I can.  There's always (as had been said) a surge in pledges in the last few days as most of the hold-outs will then contribute (which, given how Kickstarter works, I've never understood!  You don't get charged if the project doesn't reach its goal!)

Good luck!!

Eric

Darth: At 48 hours, everyone who has clicked a "remind me" button gets a notification from KS that the campaign is almost over. This usually leads to a big bump in pledges at the end.

I'll try PayPal.

Congratulations, Ali! It deserved to go much higher, but it's a respectable amount nevertheless.

Question: In a situation like this, where the campaign has reached its goal, is it more beneficial for you to have people back it through PayPal than Kickstarter?

Ali

It's preferable for me to deal with Kickstarter backers, because it's easier to keep track of reward fulfilment and updates that way. On the other hand, PayPal fees are slightly less than Kickstarter fees, so it's not a tragedy if someone switches.

Here's hoping CW finds a way to make it work!

I know, right?!

Greg Squire

Congratulations!  Looking forward to playing the finished game.

Secret Fawful

Awesome! I'm really glad to hear it did so well! I loved the first game. If I wasn't a broke bum I would have contributed in a heartbeat.

Hehe, that was my mistake, my card had just a few cents less on it than neccesary :)
Backed!

Surdy

Good job Ali ;)

I hope we could work together soon.

Wondering why there is a post about Nelly on the vidionare starting page. Is nelly 2 done with ags or with visionaire?

Ali

It's made with AGS. It seems that Visionaire are civilised enough to post about adventure games made in other engines.

Snarky

Well, that's made a fool of me, then. I could have sworn you said somewhere you were switching engine, and kept insisting on this piece of misinformation throughout Mittens. :-[

Ali

I haven't sworn not to switch engine, but I certainly haven't made the choice to switch. At the moment I'm looking for the best way to make the game available across multiple platforms without having to reinvent the wheel. Hopefully AGS will stay at the centre of that.

Tosek

But, if you are talking about multi-platform: I thought using high-res (nelly 2 is using which resolution?) could be a problem porting to small mobil devices. Or am I wrong?

Ali

Absolutely. That is one among many issues I'm looking at. If you have any other questions, please PM me so we don't clog this thread up with a conversation!

No worries! By the time Nelly II gets released, mobile devices will actually be a laser shot directly in your eyes, with a resolution of 102426*50358 ;)
