Retrovertigo (or: The Handsomest AGS Game On The Planet?)

Mr Bungle

Hi.

Before I begin to speak about my forthcoming game, let me introduce myself.

My name is Ben. I live right on the bottom tip of Africa, on the KwaZulu Natal coastline, near Durban. I came across AGS entirely by accident one day, and decided to check it out, since The Curse Of Monkey Island (along with the others in the series) ranks as one of my favourite games of all time.

So, having now played through both Larry Vales games, 5 Days A Stranger, 7 Days A Skeptic, Pleurghburg and the entire Reality-On-The-Norm series, to name a few, I decided to take it upon myself to create something for the community.

I'm going to plug this game now.

The graphics will be something to write home about... Hey, I don't need humility on my side - I'm a graphic designer! You play the cynical character, Allan Davies, and control him on his walkabouts around London. Essentially, this game will be a thriller, filled with black comedy. I won't give away any of the plot as yet; but rather, I'll give you a slight teaser - a screenshot from the first room from the game. Everything, from the iconbar to the inventory, will contain no sample graphics or animations. unfortunately, when the game is finished, I may not be able to upload it for quite some time, since I'm on a 28k connection line in this telecomm-backwardian country. The CD-ROM version will have a killer soundtrack too - as long as I can get the appropriate licencing - so it'll serve as a means of exposure for some of South Africa's best hardcore, metal, punk and alternative bands around.

So, here's the teaser (if it doesn't work, there could be a problem with the DeviantArt server):

Cheers.

<Mr-Bungle> Thank you. I appreciate this comment.

Glad to hear Africa's in the run. That screenshot is really something. Looks like a great game incoming.
Studies show that 50% of the people do not know they form half of the society.

Eggie

Hey! I love that screenshot. But you really shouldn't hotlink from deviantart. Just post a link to the page.

Vel

That looks and sounds great. However, are you going to sell the game? Or upload it from somewhere else(not your place)?

I agree, lookin' good, man!   I can't wait to see more about this.

Just to clarify, though, zor is from South Africa.  He has made quite a few games, though he doesn't come to the Forums anymore.

PS:  What's a Retrovertigo?    :P

Oh, and one last thing:  My last name's Davies!   *dances*

auhsor

Looks awesome. You are right, the graphics look sweet :D Lets hope that you can make the story engaging, and create great puzzles to go with the awsomness of the graphics.

Isn't Alan Davies the guy that plays Jonathan Creek?

Looks great! You know, the whole background style is fantastic and I'd love to play a game like that. I especially, for some reason, like the lamps on the walls. Also, and I'm sorry to critisize but the character doesn't seem to quite fit in with the detail and style of the background... it's still good though, don't get me wrong.

Mr Bungle

Okay. So that's the chap. Kinoko, I'd actually agree with you on that count... only that the problems come in thousandfold barrages, when animating very complex characters. Allan actually looks a lot better when walking, or carrying out a particular animation, in full screen mode, no less, than he does in that image.

I need to find this Zor character.

"Retrovertigo" is the name of one of the eclectic (death metal/jazz/funk/tango, etc) band Mr Bungle's more accessible songs. Read the lyrics: they're moderately appropriate in context. It's probably going to be the intro track to the game.

I may, however, scrap the title for something better at a later time. So, it's more a case of Codename: Retrovertigo for now.

That sounds like a disease. I know.

Hehe I like the flipping of graphics in the room background (lanterns, walls, etc.), I love symmetry!

Looking forward to this game.

qptain Nemo

Seems nice and interesting. But one advice: if you are gonna to make thriller & black comedy, then try to make it interesting, not only original and funny. Good luck!

UP

Looks just amazing. I'm really hoping you'll finish this some day... Some day as soon as possible.

You have been trained well. Not many n00bs plays these games, and then they ask things like what does this := smiley mean? :P

Mr Bungle

Thanks, all.

netmonkey: Pretty well the only acclaimed AGS games, which I have not played, are those in the Rob Blanc series. The link is broken.

Just because you're all so cool, I've decided to employ some Flash animation skills to make FMV animated cutscenes for the game. Look out, this is going to be good (although in due course I may release the game on AGS Home before having added the cutscenes, the full thing will be released probably not too long afterwards).

Mr Bungle

This is just a quick update. := With sideburns.

So, Codename: Retrovertigo has been almost two weeks in the making now. And what with me having to contend with end-of-year exams and the like, I'm damn well chuffed with myself on the progress I've made so far.

Right now, the game includes:

1 character (Allan);
3 rooms;
1 map screen (Tube Map);
Cool GUI graphics;
Some farking great graphics;

And that's about it.

It seems like a lot less, when one lists it that way, but hey, at least it's completely bug free! (so far.)

looks pretty good, but i think youre making a bit of a bold statement by saying things like 'the handsomest AGS game' and 'the graphics will be something to write home about', i mean im a designer too, but i dont blow my own trumpet by suggesting that my game will look amazing.

I think its better to be modest about your work than to wank off over it.

Amen...Take a look around and I'm sure you'll see many games done just as well....
