Hai guyse, 'member dis game?

Alright, before I get clubbed to death with a steel pole engraved with the forum rules: I know this game already had / has a GiP thread, which isn't even locked right now... but it was cluttered with information that was inaccurate, outdated or just plain wrong (like my numerous claims to have "fixed the walljumps", which still are a little wonky). Feel free to lock and/or delete this thread if I'm wrong, though.

Anway.

Originally an entry in TIGSource's bootleg demake competition, this is exactly that: A 2D-"remake" of Mirror's Edge. Basically, it's a 2D Jump'n'Run with a (sorta) momentum-based movement system, meaning that it's more realistic than the original Mario games, but a lot more arcade-y than the original Prince of Persia. Moves include running at different speeds, jumping (duh), sliding, climbing and possibly some more. Score points by finishing a level fast or collecting inexplicably floating mail.

Screenshots:

Noteable changes:
* Renewed graphics, 100% less stolen and not quite as likely to cause eye cancer!
* Stable concrete - no more falling through the ground!
* Actually possible walljumps: Now people who AREN'T Jesus can finish the game too!
* Player character floats in general vicinty of ladders when climbing!
* Much more stable on the "back end" - instead of spit and twigs, it's now clingfilm and pieces of plastic!
* Feeble attempts to restore crushed expectations!

Character sprites courtesy of Ben304, who is awesome. Original idea and sounds by BaronCid from the TIGSource forums. Everything else by me.

So... any comments?

Great to know you're still working on it!

I really like the idea but Borne Games is already developing Mirrors Edge 2D with help from EA.

Check it out here
(the link leads to a playable beta)

Thanks for the link. I gave that beta a quick playthrough... while it bears a few similarities, it's pretty different from what I'm making. It's sort of hard to explain... basically, ME 2D seems to be more "faithful" an adaption, in that it's quite a bit "fancier" (or "less minimalistic" if you prefer) than Corner's Shiny. Just bear with me here; the games don't make each other redundant, and you'll see why once this is released.

Also, I/we don't have support from EA. Depending on your point of view, that may or may not be a disadvantage.  ;)

I played thrue this game when you had submitted it to the contest and I remember thinking:
'Hmm.. if this were to be given more time it could actually be a great game'

Then I fell down thrue the ground like three times...

But I'm glad to see you're still working on it ;D Looking forward to it!

ALPHATT

No Problem Akatosh. I'm eagerly waiting for this one :)

I'm glad to see you're still working on this. I always thought this project has potential.

Akatosh

And I'm glad to see interest in this hasn't waned as much as I feared. Thanks guys, I'll try to keep up a steadier pace from now on.  :)

YAY! a new akatoshian release! And they even have legs!  ::)
"I've... seen things you people wouldn't believe. Destroyed pigeon nests on the roof of the toolshed. I watched dead mice glitter in the dark, near the rain gutter trap.
All those moments... will be lost... in time, like tears... in... rain."

Ah, man, this made me chuckle.

I have to say, I look forward to being able to wall jump without having to manipulate the flow of time in order to hit the controls at the right time! And, the new backgrounds look really good, much nicer than the old, less clean, stolen ones.

Pity about the character sprites but ;)

Bamp!

Ok, so I lied about the steady progress... seems like I'll be sticking with my trusty old "long-periods-of-sloth-with-irregular-27-hour-workathons-in-between" schedule. Still, the game is advancing. I'm working out the last major bugs, mostly related to ladders and wall corners and will be starting the polish soon. The two levels have been revamped both graphically and in terms of layout, and I'm planning to add some more; threeish for now, maybe more later. Also, more cutscenes with even worse English!

Yeah... for some reason, I thought making the "floor" area a mere five pixels high would be enough...  :P

DOUBLE POAST BAMP!

Just letting everyone know this is still alive. Last month was rather slow, but I'm making progress. Levels three and four are coming along nicely, and the help screen has been revamped to be... well... actually helpful. Plus, more cutscenes with some bootleggy charme to them.

So... stay (semi-)tuned!

ThreeOhFour

:O Someone set us up the bomb!

Nice :D
