How do you create new characters?!

 Here's a big problem I'm having: How do you put in a new charachter image? I've tried to change the extension on my bitmap file. Nada. So how do you change a charachter image. I've noticed that even crappy games have their own unique charachters. So please help.

I reckon people should have to write a test based on all the tutorials before they can post here  :)
If you had nothing left, would you risk it all to change everything?

the answer is also in the beginners faq, which everyone should read, its in one of the sticky threads within this subforum.

Sorry but all this sounds very  unfriendly .  
I know you don't mean to sound that way and this happens a lot but they don't know that so have a smile and think and point the right way to them ..  :-X
