I have the sierra style with background selected but it still shows it like LucusArts style.  Does it automatically go to that when you make options in the dialogue?

Also, it looks bad because the dialogue does not appear above the characters heads so it looks like all the text is in the middle of the screen or way off away from the character.  They are different colors and all, but it still looks really funny.  Is there a way to fix this?

on your general settings pane, there is the dialog area. do you have the dialog choice selected for speech style: lucasarts style... cause that could definitly be your problem.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

Nope, it's set to sierra style w/background.  I even used the command to make the speech style the same gui as the text box.  But I don't mind the lucasarts style if the text would be displayed more over the characters.  Sometimes one character will say something and it will be over the other one just because of the way it's lined up.  I've tried aligning it to the left and the center but it looks off either way.

That's probably because LA style text appears above the characters rather than the portraits.
I have no idea how to solve your problem though. Sorry.

Have you defined talking views for the characters?

talking views?  You mean the colors?

On the "Characters" there will be a number of boxes that you use to define which view is the characters Walking Animation, Talking Animation, etc. Have you defined anything in that? If you leave it as 0, the text will only come up as Lucasarts style. Try changing it to any view that exists (1, most likely) and it should come up with a background.
