Is it just me, or is this entry horribly broken?

Do you mean mine? What do you mean by broken?

NsMn

All I hear is strange noise. Is that the "Midi drums" you mentioned? I don't really hear any melody either.

Oh jesus, i just downloaded it now. No idea how that happened :/

I'll fix it ASAP.

Edit: Ok, it's fixed, new link is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dezjjmztazn.

Nikolas

Another few days people! Let's hear your bad guys roaring!

If anyone wants a (small) extension, better speak up now, or shut up forever! ;)

And, btw, how would you feel about public voting, like the Background Blitz? It feels almost 'unfair' to have the winner judge everytime? Lemme know...

Dualnames

I'm fine with anything Nikolas! It's your choice.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Viking

The good things about public voting are that it lets the people have a voice, and it dilutes the biases of the previous winner.  The bad things are that sometimes people who are voting do not have sufficient discernment to make a knowledgeable choice, and that sometimes not enough people vote to make it a truly democratic process.  (I'm glad I'm not a politician. ;) )  Pick your poison!

Nikolas: your track is pretty awesome, man! It sounds like it could be on the Painkiller soundtrack! :D I didn't know you were into hard rock... To be honest, I'd always thought that you were very classical-oriented and didn't care that much for metal and the like. Dunno why, maybe 'cos I (and not only I) consider you one of the best composers on AGS.

Phemar: Daaaamn, man, that's some wicked-ass metal. It sounds like it could work for some Melodic Death band... It kind of reminds me of Children of Bodom. The only complaint I have is that it's not mixed... The volume levels thus make small crackling sounds and there's one point where there's just too much bass (around 0:56-1:00). I would recommend doing what I do: record each instrument separately with Audacity, then change the volume levels on the tracks. I usually record everything very loud and then mix down so that you can actually turn up the volumes if you want to listen louder and speakers don't explode. That minor criticism aside, you're really giving me a run for my money in the heavy metal department! :D

Regarding voting or not-voting, I'm ok with both, but I believe that not-voting will end the competition quicker :P. Also, if we're going with voting, all the participants should also vote (of course, not for themselves) lest we run into the brick wall that is too few votes. I'll definitely use the power of democracy when the voting phase begins ;).

Nikolas

Shiver: Thanks ^_^. I'm into a lot of thing, although I am rather classically oriented in general. I (was) am classically trained, and this shows most of the times.

About voting: TBH I do prefer it, but the problem is that usually fewer voters than participants seem to appear afterwards... In the CGEmpire days it was the voting part that was most confusing, but also most rewarding. I had come up with a very ellaborate system of points to 'award' voters (an extra vote for those members who would vote), and also a rule which would preclude participants voting for their entry, and 2 votes for each member to use as they seemed fit and all these stuff.

All these seem uneccessary in this competition, but voting it is, I think! either way, voting will run for a couple of days only, not a too long time... ;)

Let's see if anyone else comes up with an entry before tomorrow and then we'll start the voting process... ;)

Also, thanks for all the interest and the entries to this comp! It has been, thus far, a great competition!

Le Woltaire

I am entering quickly.
It's just for accordeon...

Could be either a Russian communist final enemy who throws unlimited red books.
Or a French revolutionist final enemy who shots lots of baguettes...

daremes

Hi guys,

It seems I've missed the deadline :(
But I try it anyway:
http://soundcloud.com/daremes/finalboss-ags

It's just a short'n'silly tune about arcade-like fight against a goofy final boss. No blood.PG 11. :)

This is my first post ever. I love the forum and I'm happy to see so many talented guys here!

Nikolas

No worries, daremes. Nobody had voted, so I've added your piece to the list of the pieces. Nice entry, btw ^_^. Very electronic(a). ;)

Best of luck to all!

daremes

Thanks, Nikolas. How do I vote? Shall I send you PM or post it right here?
Btw. I've just heard your piece "Int. Music I." and it's absolutely brilliant. (Chamber Music Contest)

NsMn

Even though it didn't quite fit the theme - I really liked the ambience set in End Of The Line.

Therefore, my vote goes to Viking!

Nikolas

daremes: Thanks for your comment about Int. Music I. Yeah, just post here. It's not worth it going to PM and anonymous voting and NsMn did above my post. ;)

Dualnames

It was the bloody reason why I asked him to compose two songs for HHGTG,and yes,my vote goes to ShiverMeSideways
Very close to getting my vote were Viking and Nikolas(also totally unexpected track from you! :D).
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Viking

Wow, lots of great entries!

  • ShiverMeSideways: Great, lots of atmosphere, very aggressive, definitely sounds like a bad guy; but not a whole lot of variation, esp. towards the end, and rather heavy on the cymbals
  • MMMorshew: Great harmony -- love the constant Bb-E tritone, nice atmosphere; not sure how well it fits a showdown with the final bad guy, a bit repetitive
  • Dualnames: Nice atmosphere; not sure how well it fits the theme, very repetitive (esp. the E, F in the bass)
  • Nikolas: Great, very aggressive, definitely fits the theme, nice effects; pretty repetitive, would probably give me a headache if looped indefinitely
  • Phemar: Nice -- metal seems to be very popular this time :); fits the theme; basically sound, but not much to differentiate it
  • Le Woltaire: Unique as always; great atmosphere, sounds quite majestic in places; sounds more like the prelude to fighting the bad guy rather than the actual fight itself, to my subjective ears; would probably be more effective on the organ than the accordion; some parts sound like they would need two hands on the keyboard, and some sustained passages seem to be longer than a single bellows opening/closing could last -- i.e. I'm not sure it's playable, but then I know next to nothing about accordion playing :)
  • Daremar: Wonderful, great mood, very different from the other entries, my six-year-old loved it; a bit repetitive, too short, probably would have gotten my vote if it were longer. :)

I'm going to have to go with MMMorshew, but some of the others were very close!

ShiverMeSideways

My vote goes to Phemar, because although the other entries are certainly interesting and interpret the theme quite liberally, none of them I'd use for one of my boss fights. I'm tackling this from a game designer's perspective. My final boss wouldn't be sneaky or communist, he'd be fierce and mean. I would've voted for Nikolas, 'cos his song actually sounds like boss fight music from the game Painkiller, but I can't, 'cos he made the thread. So yeah, definitely Phemar.

Phemar

@Shivermesideways
Thanks for the kind words about my track! Yea I've thought of recording each track separately, and at one point even recording each drum separately, but at the end of the day I'm just waaaaay too lazy!! Regarding your track, I like the way it's constructed, and it has a very cool old school metal sound, which I dig because it's the kind of music I grew up listening to. The intro riff reminded me a bit of No Leaf Clover by Metallica, and I thought maybe the midi parts sounded a bit too midi at times, but besides that I think it's a really cool song! Congrats.

@MMMorshew
Cool track, reminded me of the kind of music I'd hear during a level of doom. Ambient, starts off slow with more instruments coming in later. Nice work on the old school video game sound.

@Viking
This track is quite awesome, I won't lie. I can definitely see it working as the final track in an adventure game during the laast puzzle. I love the suspense you've built while at the same staying ambient!

@Dualnames
Wow this piece is ambient. I can see it working in an adventure game inside a cave or something. I'm not quite sure if it's suited for a final boss, but otherwise good work.

@Nikolas
Instant flashbacks to the arcade! I can see this working in some fighter game like Mortal Kombat or something. I love the whole pump-up vibe you've built. Really action-packed and full of life!

@Phemar
Holy crap... I never thought I'd encounter something as awesome as this. You're probably the best musician/composer I've ever heard. Keep up the good work!!

@Le Woltaire
I really love the sound of the accordion so I quite liked your track. Though as I said to others I'm not quite sure if it works as final boss  music. Still cool, although it did feel a little too 'punctuated' at times with all the staccato notes going on.

@Daremes
Nice short tune. I wouldn't quite put as a final boss tune in a game, but I can see it working for a cute little platformer or something. Nice work.

Now... To make a decision! I seem to be in a toss up between ShiverMeSideways and Viking...

But I think I'll go with ... ShiverMeSideways!

daremes

And my vote goes to...MMMorshew. It's killer old-school MIDI tune, it's catchy and it suits the mood.
It wasn't easy to choose, because I really liked "Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Trall" by Dualnames. It's my cup of tea but it doesn't work for final bad guy situation. I would vote for Nikolas, he's pro, it's catchy, its production value beats the others and I like electro-blast around 0:30, but since he's announcer of this contest I don't vote for him. Actually, Viking's tune is brilliant and sophisticated and I don't even know why I didn't vote for him!?
