from concept picture to functional background

Here's my try:

I used Photoshop CS and it took a couple of hours. Basically I tried not to concentrate on details but on the big picture. Didn't succeed so well in the perspective as it's not very calming to look at. Looks like the buildings were on downhill. Oh well, it was good practice.

By the way, Eric, when will you get yours finished? I can't wait.

That's great Pessi! I need to learn how to colour with my wacom and your progress shots will help, block in the main colours first and all that...

the green trees in the background are just flat green and they kinda stop at the tower with the hook...

Wow, I gotta work in this thread, but not now...lol...My problem is composition, making good looking background layouts before the "pixel art" ever really begins.

Now someone should make eric's BG animated! Great work (I'd just spray paint the grass with a scatter brush in photosoap with the saturation and brightness randomized, then lighten and darken areas as you see fit.)

actually, the deadline was the end of april, so...
of course everybody can still have a go at the sketch, but this thread isn't needed anymore, since I'm gonna make a gallery of the bg:s we've got so far.
