The other way is mentioned in the built-in hint system of the original game’s special edition. I quote:

Spoiler
What is the thing my aunt gave me?
â€" Have you tried examining it?
â€" Have you tried getting rid of it?
â€" You’ve probably noticed that it keeps turning up.
â€" If you leave it behind, it will pop up about a dozen moves later, sometimes on the groud where you are, sometimes in your inventory, and sometimes in your gown pocket. (The thing will only "follow" you when you are Arthur.)
â€" There’s something else that you probably haven’t noticed about the thing your aunt gave you.
â€" You can put things in it. In fact, you can put almost every takeable item into the thing at the same time.
â€" This is useful for transporting more objects than you can carry, but it isn’t ever necessary to do so.
â€" Because of these two properties (auto-return and containment) the thing your aunt gave you provides an alternate solution of one of the puzzles in the game.
â€" It’s a puzzle toward the very end of the game.
â€" It’s the puzzle of getting the flowerpot out of the whale.

How do I get the pot from the whale?
â€" There are two ways to do this.
â€" One way involves the Thumb.
â€" The other method involves the thing your aunt gave you which you don’t know what it is.
â€" To obtain the flowerpot using the thumb, just pick up the pot and hitchhike.
â€" For more details, see the question on getting out of the whale.
â€" To obtain the flowerpot using the aunt’s gift: the aunt’s gift has an unusual property you may not have discovered. See the question about the aunt’s gift.
â€" Just put the flowerpot inside the aunt’s gift and then wait until the whale splats. Within a few turns after leaving Dark, the aunt’s gift should reappear, containing the pot.

Awww, that's so cool. Shamefully to admit I wasn't aware of that.  :(
If however there's a next version of this, I will no matter what put it there. ;)

Oh but there will be a next version, since you promised a voice pack and some of us are still waiting  ;)

Well, I only knew it because I read those hints.

Edit:I found a list of all the hints here. Maybe you will find other things you missed.

Hey tzachs, sorry to keep you  (and everyone interested ) on the waiting line.

The whole problem lies with people being busy that's all. Calin is working hard on those lines, and I'm sure he'll eventually deliver them. I'm really not into changing another narrator again really. If Calin never manages, then no voice pack really. I'm sure he'll be able to find the time and slowly deliver them.

And I told my other voice-actors that unless that role is delivered, it'd be a shame to work on their lines for nothing. Cause it's a big percentage of the games lines, and its essential that this role is complete. Several minor roles have been delivered, and all roles are there apart from Eddie's, Ford's, Dent's and Narrator (Calin).

I've got almost all roles there, if I recall correctly, but lately I've been not working on HHGTG to be completely honest. I'm much more into darker games. I think comedy games really are a great genre but not one I've been good at. And definitely there will be a voice pack to this game at some point if all goes well, but surely not a sequel to this on my side.

EDIT: Also the game is featured on PC Master's (GREEK) Bonus Stage section of Issue August 2010, which I have in my hands. I don't have a scanner, but I'll find a way.

Bah, I read an 'adventure gaming' themed copy of that mag a while back and saw in the opening pages a response by one of the writers to the genre - something akin to "Never liked them, they are the equivelant to apes banging rocks together". Not to take away from a great achievement though, a great feat indeed! It's only that one moron that rubbed me the wrong way...

Calin Leafshade

I think apes banging rocks together would be kind of entertaining..

It's okay, I get your point. I don't like certain attitudes myself. The phrase by the way that point and click adventures are the equivalent of apes banging the rocks, was what Douglas Adams used to refer to the genre. So I can't really choose a side.
