It's had a facelift!

take a look and let me know what you think, portfolios a bit empty at present, but its coming along.

Looks good. Clean and professional.

The only gripe I have about it - and this is a personal preference - is that when I'm browsing the portfolio, I'm blindly clicking around without really knowing what's going to pop up. Even an image <alt> tag with some minor comment about what it is (photography? game graphic? etc) might be helpful. The little squares are good for figuring mediums out at a glance, but extremely vague without a context for it.

Then again it's purely a preference. It's easy to navigate and easy on the eyes.

I don't know a lot about websites but:

1. For some reason, when I try to click on the images of the p o r t o f o l i o the new window does not stay open. I don't know why. This is probably my fault and not yours or you sites' but just to be on the safe side...

2. When you enter the site, you go immediately to the portofolio section? Shouldn't you first say something like welcome, or something similar?

Other than that I like the layout a lot. The colours a lot. The generall feel a lot.
Generally I like sites that don't use the whole page but are limited.

Good job!

1. The window should stay open? Might be a fault with your browser.

2. Good question, but i really feel that it works best when the work is there to see as soon as you arrive. The site is a portfolio first and foremost, so i want the portfolio section to be the main section and the 1st thing seen.

JeebusSez-

Not a bad idea, but beleive it or not (most of you probably wont lol) the idea with the cropped thumbnails is that i dont want people to know what they're going to see until they've opened it. If people can see or know in advance what it is, then they may not even open the page at all. Just my spin on it :)

Looks good. Maybe a bit empty :P

Gah! I seriously love your style! Gonna play this game! ;D

Very nicely done website. Great source code you got there! Also I like it to not know what will pop up, so keep that! I guess this website does exactly what it must, nothing more or less, and that's terrific!

I think visually your website is very pleasing, nice. However, I think you should have some kind of a heading on the page to tell the visitor where (s)he is. When I went to your page, I thought it was the opening page and the links were menu items to sub-pages, when in reality it was the portfolio (with links to images only.)

If I didn't know it was your website, I would've left immediately, because I leave every website on general principle, where the menu items do not clearly depict the target (either by text/tooltip or by a clear pictogram.) I then realized that the menu is on the bottom and the page is not an opening page.

I don't have a problem with starting in the portfolio (after all, you want to show off your artwork), just make it a bit more clear that it's the portfolio.

Otherwise, I like it a lot. :)

Hey Dan!
First of all, it looks great! I like its minimalistic, clean look. classy :)

The only minor critic.. i think you'd be better off with 2 separated sub categories. One for photography and one for drawings.. it can be all on one page (as it is now) except separated. Here's an example
(don't mind the font, color, composition.. it's just to illustrate what i had in mind).

Oh, and i love pop ups! if it's not a secret, can you tell me, what to do, so it's just a window without usual explorer junk?

It's all the source code; look in the JavaScript definitions and the <a> tags, namely the onClicks. What's interesting is that Dan used one big map overlay and just defined regions to do the links, unless Dreamweaver mystically magically does that for you; I would've been lazy and just linked for each image :P

And just a warning versus popup windows, more aggressive popup killers might eat your windows.

He-Man

Hi there.
Your page is very nice and has a very clean design. Mybe a little empty but I guess that will change later on.
HOwever, when opening the colourman image the window is too small and you can't read the bottom line. I havn't checked all the other pictures but they didn't seem to have that problem.
Cheers

DanClarke

Igor: In all hoensty the site was initially designed in exactly the structure you speak of, but as i went on i decided i wanted people to have to explore and see everything that i can do, rather than just choosing what they'd like to see. It's an element of exploration and experimentation, akin to a lot of the work i do.

And with regards to your question, i use macromedia dreamweaver, which gives checkbox options for things like addressbars and resize handles etc  when creating new windows that open.

He-man, ill be sorting this problem soon, it's just a case of adding an option for resize handles on my pop ups.

ill be updating the site in the next few days, complete with the launch of The Legend of the Lost Lagoon's very own minisite! :)
