IK, i spent some time animating today, and something i noticed was that i'm not overly keen on the hat that Gloria wears, and it's also a humongous pain in the ass in terms of animating. Gloria comes from pretty much a present day period, so i don't think the hat is really fitting in that sense either. So i've come up with a new version of hers truly. I know some of you are going to prefer the old one, but i actually think he looks cuter with her hair down!:

P.S: I'm also toying with the idea of changing the shirt colour.

EDIT:

EDIT 2:

EDIT 3:

tidied up the shirt + shorts, and moved her head back slightly, it appeared a little craned.

Shes a total babe. :=

Erm.. well. I do like the hair down, and agree on dropping the hat... but then again, there should be something that identifies with her. Maybe not.

The white shirt, I think, works just fine.

She has gotten cuter. What did you do?Ã,  ;)
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

I like it. I think it give it a much nicer look. Maybe the hat can make a cameo somewhere in her room or something... ;)

Um, not to be picky, but the clothes remind me of Ben Jordan's old outfit... :D

Have you tried messing with a ponytail or a head band? Althogh I like this one, I always like to suggest some ideas. Perhaps the shirt color can be based on what kind of person gloria is, I don't know about the character as much as you do.

However, I always figured that she got the hat from soneone like her grandpa gave it to her or something. Kind of like uh... Link in Zelda: The Wind Waker.

DanClarke

Lol ok guys, easy on the babe comments, we've decided on a final age, she's 14[/i].

Kweepa

Her hair is a bit octagonal at the back.
I like the ponytail (edit 2)  - that could be because the octagonalness is minimised.
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II

loominous

Not what you asked for, but something that bothered me:

I always liked that hat. It's true that she looks cuter without it, but she looses much of her originality, and I find too cute/attractive protagonists a problem, similar to how flawless personalities usually equals boring.

That avatar you've got could work well as coverart in it's simplicity, which I think is a good indicator of a solid design. I doubt that these modified looks would suffice in that situation.

Since you seem unhappy with the old one I suggest that keep looking for a new design that has the good qualities of the original and as well as satisfy your new demands.
Looking for a writer

Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens

I made a few different versions (and cleaned up the sprite in case someone else wants to play with a non-blown up version).

Evil

I loved that hat. :(

But if you must go with the pony tail then go with something like Prog's. It's much more girly, and much less "sexy" as the current style.

sergiocornaga

Why not have various outfits? Your game would be viewed as truly professional.

ildu

SergioCornaga: Most likely because the animations would be an even bigger pain in the butt.

I, too, loved the hat. It gave it a very original look. It also added kind of a Spirited Away fantasy feel to the whole game. Now she looks just too ordinary. And as someone said, it makes you wonder why she has such an odd hat that looks too large for her. It makes you think maybe her grandfather gave it to her, which then deepens the relationship and the whole story a lot.

Gregjazz

I like hairstyle in edit 2 the best. Keep up the good work!

mätzyboy

I agree with Evil that the hat added to her personality. But if the hat has to go, the hat has to go...

In that case edit nr. 2 with loominous changes in posture would be the best alternative in my opinion!

DanClarke

Thanks for the feedbacl guys, i prefer the hair down tbh, but i'll keep going until i find something.

Prog: I like your edits (1 of them looks scarily like my g/f lol) but i think the styles might be a little too mature for a 14 year old.

Loominous: You're certainly right about the posture change and ill look into that, bar the legs in your edit, i think theyre a little too skinny.

I'll keep going until i find something that stands out a little more.

Snarky

Oh man, without the hat I don't see any reason to play this game.  ;)

But seriously. The hat rocked. I will mourn its absence. Hey, maybe someone can provide a hatpatch to modify the sprites and restore the headgear!

DoorKnobHandle

You have so many great looking sprites, it'd be a shame to have to go with only one.
If I'd be you, I would make her change her appearance several times in the game. That would make her a more believable character and it would show off all those great sprites. You could even go as far as having the way she looks dependent on the situation she is in. Do you have a scene where she has to act mature and grown-up? Then let her hair and the rest of her body seem more mature (like in prog's edit). Or does she seem immature, childish and young in a scene? Then let her wear that hat, that makes her look younger.

It's an interesting idea, and a few people have mentioned it. As said, the workload for creating full animations with different clothing would be too much in  asingle game, but there's always part two, so i guess she can have a change of clothes for the 2nd part when it does eventually arise.

Well, there's always the possibility to get help for the animation part also. Actually while thinking about it, there are at least ten people who do animation once a week (I'm talking about the animation comp). I'm sure that someone (more than one actually) will want to help you.

Imagine that you, yourself, did 4 different versions! You must have time to do like another... [(2x8)x4]...64 different versions for an animated sprite with 8 positions for up, down etc...

Shit! That's a lot of workload. Find work!

Anyway check the animation competitions and then see... how it goes.

I can't believe that I'm here only 4 months and allready giving advice to a guy who is here 1 and a half year!  :-\

Darth Mandarb

You know ... if just the colors of her shirt/pants were to change.  It would be a change of clothes and not require any re-animating, just color replacing.

I own 4 pair of shorts that are all the same, just different colors, and about 30 t-shirts like that.

Just a suggestion :)

Nikolas

You know, I can imagine, a bunch of AGSers playing TLOTLL and wainting for her to take of her hat :'(, or change clothes and then applause and having tears in their eyes...

I think that here, you have very strong feelings from everyone to do this. To have different clothes (and maybe to keep her hat?)

Of course it is up to you, don't forget that. And either way it is great!

Ill look into the possibilty of her changing at some point, but im not gonna go ott with it, it doesnt really add anything to the game, and i dont want people to be distracted from the main game beause they spen an hour clicking 'use wardrobe'.
