So here´s the 3:rd version of the cartoonish background, with the maincharacter :D Still not sure about the shading of the tree etc....

Andail

It's nice. Neat and clean comicbook scene.
The perspective on the roof of the barn has gone haywire, but it doesn't really matter. Also, the grass is a bit monotone; break it up with details and a bit of shading.

A Barn Runner fan game in the works? ;)

Jokes aside, I like this background very much. To give some actual value to this post, I'll second Andail's suggestion that maybe you could add a hint of grassy texture to the light green foreground. Also the tree might look better (less flat) if the leafy part (foliage?) cast shadows on the top parts of the trunk.

InCreator

Add shadows to trees and other things too.
Grass really does need some extra lumps and detail overall. Maybe a second shade?

Barn would use some more detail, such as spiderwebs or tools hanged onto wall or more cracks or whatever. Too much empty, boring area on sides.

Monk

aye... the shadows will make that baby more awesome! keep up the good stuff!!

JuuJuu

I love it! I always loved the cartoony styles!

My favorite are the trees in the very background, very nice!

But I would have to agree with the other people, just a few shadows, mostly from the tree, and the barn.
Also maybe fix the roof of the closest barn. It's a bit curvy in the back and looks like is it sinking down. Maybe draw more to it.

But I must say again : love it.

thanks guys :) I´ve tried to shade grass before but it never looks good...maybe someone here could help me to shade the grass a little? just to give me some pointers :D

well first decide where you'd want the sun, and then provide shadows accordingly behind the trees and the barns using a shade darker color. and with the same color just provide some jagged-ish lines though the grass.

i just thew this together, it's a small section.

not the greatest, nor probably most accurate, but it'll give you an idea of kinda what to do

Mr Flibble

As well as what Ed did, I'd suggest throwing in some even darker shadows on the grass behind the doors, to the side of the barn, and at the base of the tree to add some more depth to what I think is a superb background.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

JuuJuu

the characters neck is a bit thick.

But other then that, very cartoony! Matches the background quite well~ good job

Questionable

I think the way he (face and jacket) is shaded makes him look weird... it's like you tried to hand make a gradient, which is unneccesary. Also I think that you can remove the cheek-bone definition... it looks a bit like a tumor. Other than that, it's good.
All my trophies have disappeared... FINALLY! I'm free!

And here´s yet another picture i´ve been working with

In this new picture, all surfaces are roughly filled and shaded but the house. The walls are very detailed and I think it is in contrast with the rest of the picture. Maybe use bigger stones (?) for the wall?

On the opposite, I'd like to see some more shading on the grass.

I couldn't help but notice how small that door is on the left.
Also I didn't like how the base of the building where the left door is, is almost in a straight line with the horizon.

I'm just curious - those backgrounds look like a lot of work. How long does it take to get one done / postable? (you might as well keep it secret  :) )

Could it be, that the picture composition is nearly the same as in your first background (big building left, landscape and a tree on the right) ? You might try diversify your upcoming pics a little.

Mouth for war

hehe yeah i noticed that the buildings on both pictures are to the left...that happened by mistake i guess...wasn't my intention...it just happened hehe. Yeah it does take some time...the stones on the wall was the killer on this one hehe.  i have saved a lot of time by not doing any details with the grass etc. just some simple stuff will be added to the grass. and i choosed a style i'm pretty comfortable with i think that´s very important. and when you know how you want it it get´s faster and faster to do it i guess...I made an attic 2 days ago...and...it was done in like one hour or so :)
