need masive help on char

This is only my second char ever and i need some massive help. I intended him to look like an late 1800's early 1900's detective and he turned out modern looking.

Here's a quick paintover.
I kept it in style.



Gave him a top hat - nobody went out without a hat in Victorian times.
Gave him muttonchops.
Shortened his neck.
Took hands out of pockets and lengthened his coat tails.
Added some detail to the jacket.

Yeah, here's another one:


- Made the jacket longer.
- Added a top hat.
- Put his hands IN his pockets. Like them like that.
- Lowered his shoulders a little to make him seem less stiff.
- dragged the trousers in one pixel to make it seem like his hands are actually in the pockets and that they overlap the shoes.

 The first thing that pops into mind when I hear "detective from the late 1800's early 1900's" is someone wearing a hat, cape, and holding a cane. Perhaps you should try adding those to your character.

Yeah, and just to point out. I lowered some of the pixels of his shoulders to make them seem a little less stiff.

based on SteveMcCrea's hcar:

recolored the clothes.
greyed his hair.
lenghtened the coat even more.
took the red out of his lips.
20 colors. (including background)



maybe the coat is too long now.

edit: oops, really looks crap. use dart's ideas.

I made 2 different outfits for him which I will use interchangebly throughout the game

Good choices, I think...
I like the creased trousers.
I'd darken them to RGB = (99,84,79) with the crease at (70, 60, 60).
And lighten the lines separating his arms from his body.

but i would still reduce the hat height. or at least make it more round.

atm the hat looks too ?aristocratic? to me.

The short round hat reminds me of Watson.
The tall square hat reminds me of Holmes.
That was my thinking anyway.

Started by giving him suspenders and bowler hat. Got carried away and turned him into alex from a Clockwork Orange.
