This is my first attempt at making my own background, so I need some advice before I continue if I'm doing something wrong ...

I think the lamp looks a little bit odd, but I don't know how to draw it any better.
Also, I think the room looks bare. If so, what should I add?
Did I overdo the texturing? (every single thing is textured)

Feel free to suggest anything at all. It's all vector so it's no problem to change things.

You might try to redo the lamp in a painting program, (Pixia for Freebies!).  That is, assuming that you drew it by hand - which it looks like.  It's sometimes easier to get uniform shapes.

Your textures look good - the floor and the walls could do with some seamless textures, but the room items look great.

Hope that helps.

Jay

How's this?
I gave the floor and walls seamless textures, straightened out the lamp, gave the nighttable legs (to get rid of the cardboard-box look), and antialiased it all.

DCillusion

Much Better!  The Seamless textures change the whole appearance of the room.

The Texture of the floor is too big (think of the tree you would need for this!), you have to adjust the textures on the side walls according to the perspective.

Although this may sound harsh, textures are evil. They help in no way. Please try and make your own textures or maybe use flat colours. But please don't use textures.

you might want to give more depth to the bedpost. It looks a bit too flat to be supporting those balls. Also, beds generally have a lower bedpost as well, under the feet. About the light given off the lamp, generally the light directly under the lamp is very sharp, and not as "glowy" as you have made it. And the bedside table does not seem to conform to the perspective. It is wider at the top than at the bottom. However, this may be because it was placed crookedly. Perhaps you should move it closer to the bed, and up against the wall, as that seems a more common place (eg, you can reach out and turn off the lamp from bed)

NICE WORK!

Whenever I like something I want to play with it - so I gave it a go and added some stuff. Mostly I made large portions of thewhole image darker to give it a more misterious look (besides I doubt such a small lamp could light a room of ca. 20 m² so bright). I also added some "waving" and bulging to the wallpapers since I imagined this to be an old room (looks like something my grandma spent het youth in)

I also was not too accurate but I think it get over some ideas. Discard anyhing you don't like!

Thanks for all the advice.

What I did was:
- added depth to the bedpost
- fixed the glowy look under the lamp to be solid
- moved the table closer to the wall and bed
- added shadows (they're straight, i know, but thats a limitation of my program... it doesn't look too bad, does it?)
- made the lamp's light more centralized
- gave the metal lamp texture
- removed the pillowcase texture
- made the wallpaper smaller
- partitioned the wood floor
... and probably some other things I forgot that I did.

Albert: I wasn't intending for it to be an old room, what should I change to make it more modern looking?

Alec: I don't think textures are evil, they've improved the look of the room a lot actually. What's so bad about them?

Babar: I'm not sure what you meant about the bedside table being wider at the top. It looks okay to me, and it passes the vanishing point test. What should I change?

Babar

Great edit. If the table reaches the vanishing point, I guess it is OK. From a casual look I thought it was out of perspective. Sorry  :-[ . Another thing I noticed, that I should have mentioned before, is the lampshade is not in perspective. You should be able to see a bit of the top, but the view is straight on from the side. Other than that, I can't see anything wrong with it.

The shadow of the bed on on the wall looks like the wall would be the floor.

The bed side table is too far away from the bed.
Don't put outlines in, this makes it look better.
Somethings in the room have outlines, others don't (like the pillow against the bed spread).
The lamp looks 2dish.
Sorry to be so blunt and all.

I fixed lamp perspective (I think).
I also removed the bed's shadow from the wall completely. Because the end of the bed is right in the center, the vanishing point is nearly a straight line, so it's hard to make it look right. No shadow is less distracting, I think.
I removed some of the outlines and made others blend in better. I tried removing all outlines, but it looked like crap.
Lastly, the bedside table isn't against the bed so that the player can see the bed better, and I plan for the player to be able to get in it too, so I want it distanced so I can animate it better.
Besides, I don't think most people playing will really notice the distance. But if it does look bad I will try and figure something out.

Raider

Maybe put it on the other side of the bed.
Or it could be there for a perpose.
Good work by the way.
