Hi, I was hoping to get a little C&C with this sprite.  I'm better at backgrounds, so drawing sprites is a little frustrating for me...any advice would certainly be welcome.  Just to give you some background, this kid is from a poor home, he's a bit mentally handicapped, and can't talk.  I always imagined him as a sort of hump-back type, but this is the best version I've come up with yet.

thanks,

Logan

First, let me start off by saying I love your art style a lot. I really like this sprite, but there seem to be a few, little issues with anatomy. Unless I'm reading it wrong and his arms are bent, it looks like his hands fall at his waist, which would make them way too short. Make his elbows rest where his sleeve ends and lengthen his arm so that his fingertips fall mid-thigh and that anatomy issue will be dealt with. If his arms are bent, I would suggest emphasising where his elbows bend by adding a darker shade there, so people don't think his arms are just short.

Other than that, I wouldn't want you to change a thing. It fits your background style very well. I like it.

IMO the body looks way to cylinder style:
The shoulder too high and the chest to round.
Makes it look like a cylinder. (as mentioned)

The lighting is also to from the top...

I dont know the anatomy of your character but  normaly the characters chest will cast a shadow over the middle of the body causing it to be a little darker and the belly to be shaded lightly again.

PS GREAT STYLE!

Hm, add more detail to the hair, like there is in the rest of the pic, and maybe extend his arms a little.

It looks good to me. I thought, that he had his hands crossed behind his back, but then you shouldn't see parts of it. Since I like this pose, I would suggest letting the hands vanish completely behind his back. Other than that it gives a very good atmosphere.

Thanks for the all the help everyone!  His arms have been a problem, but I'll work on it tonight.  I'll also play around with everyone's suggestions.

I appreciate it,

I think his pants are to strait and round. They seem to conform to his legs. And he doesnt really have any knees.

Here is a paintover I did to give you some ideas.

1.  I found that you use far too many similar shades, reducing these somewhat will make sprite design faster and better looking for you

2.  Gave him a hump that resulted in a stunted left arm

3.  flared his pants and made them a bit short

4.  Made him a little heavy.  I've known alot of really, really cool mentally challenged kids and they never worry about their weight (aren't they the lucky ones).

5.  Changed his shoes to a lighter color

6.  Since his head is tilted down, swiped some hair over one eye.

I kept the contrast low because of your style, but I would recommend greater contrast for the sprites so they stand out better.

Also, please post just the sprite without a background in future if you want help, it makes edits much easier.  Thanks!

Hope you find this useful.

Yea. all my mentally challenged friends are kinda weighty too.

Anarcho

thanks for the paintover Prog, though I did some reworking myself before rechecking this post.  Here's what I've done thus far, and I'm pretty satisfied with it.

I know I probably should draw him a bit more overweight, but I kinda like him this way.  As for the contrasting, it really blends well with my backgrounds I think:

Thanks for the help & I'm going to play around with your suggestions.

You need more contrast, less saturation, I think. Give it a better-lit vibe. I didn't mess with anything much.

Did you put more contrast on the boy, than you did the background?  he looks really good.

EDIT: Oh, I zoomed in and saw what you did.  I like your changes!
