So - well - here's my latest BG. It's supposed to be a garages block which is very common in my neighborhood. And this BG will possibly be used in my next game.
Well -- here it is:

So - the main problems:
-It looks way too empty. What kinda details should I add?
-The grass in the front sucks a lot. What should I do with it?
-The shading - I tried to do it mostly pixel-by-pixel. Does it looks good?
-The colors.
-Also, this BG has very low funcionality, but I think that's allright.

And if you think of anything else, then just let me know.;)

Thanks.

it is quite nice in fact. good colour choices, maybe a bit too dark, but that might be my moniter. as for extra details, well grass and weeds sprouting from pavement and in the grass. a big sign for the business, some debris(chip or crisp bags, pop cans and othe junk) all in all though quite nice :D

No, it seems dark to me as well...

Gameboy: What time of day is it? Cause the shadows indicate something like 12:00...

Other than that, everything is fine. Not to empty, although a bin or a light or something could benefit the picture.

But overall very nice. Youy have a very consistent style in your BGs and they work lovely!

Afflict

some oil on the ground heh.

other than that just some junk.. as mentioned
and maybe a toolbox.

Gameboys sprites are useually dark i remember a background blits not so long ago...

gameboy

Thanks, everyone.
The reason why it looks too dark may be because I've got very bad monitor and I don't see the graphics like you do because of that.

Adding some details such as trash and other stuff is not bad idea. I'll see what I come up with.

Oh, and the time was supposed to be morning... or something like that.
But anyways I will make it lighter.

DutchMarco

Add some texture to the asphalt and the grass. They're too much like smooth surfaces but in reality they're more, euhm, "textured". Well "coarser" might be a more useful word. Add some flowers in the grass, you have some by the side but put them all over. Shade the garage walls, the colour isn't supposed to be that uniform. Dare I use the word "gradient"?

Finally, the road in the background looks like it's slanted toward the viewer. It should look flatter and the road stripes should be vaguer.

I hope this helps. If I soudn too critical it's because I've been playing DOTT again and man, any work that any one of us mortals do on the BGs is doomed by comparison!

(but do keep up hope, it *is* a very nice BG)

gameboy

Thanks,
did some changes.

Here:

So I:
-changed it a little bit lighter
-made the shadows longer, to make it look more like morning
-changed the car a little bit
-added some junk
-added some oil. Does it look like oil?
-added one more flower...

Well, DutchMarco, that is also good point to add textures on the plain areas. Dammit, got not very much time, but I hope to do it soon. :)

Mordalles

that looks really cool.
however, im more excited by the fact that your game is already 92% finished!  ;)

Looking good, but it lacks contrast, and that hurts the eye in my opinion.Ã,  Right now, the lightest spot in your image is a 40% grey, and that makes it hard for the eye to find the details.
I tried lighting it up for you. It might be too light, losing some of the mood, but i wanted to show you what i mean. Hope this helps.

gameboy

OK, I get what you mean. So the BG lacks contrast. It really is a problem. And this problem exists with most of my BGs.
I tried to do something here. Dunno, is it much better, but the sky and the asphalt are more lighter.

I think the asphalt is fine now, but I still don't like the sky. Not sure, what to do with it.

Quotehowever, I'm more excited by the fact that your game is already 92% finished!

The game is almost finished, especially graphically. The only thing I need to do with it is some boooring scripting... and I find making graphics much more entertaining, so I'm already drawing graphics for another game..
I hate scripting. :P
Anyway, really glad to see you're intrested in my game :)

Afflict

I like the lighting on homeworld the only problem is the lighting will probably be inconsistant with the rest of your game...

Alternativle you can say its for the guys playing the game in mid morning hours to save our eyes.. ;)

I'd actually say this is a step backwards. It's a good example of what could be done. I don't think thats as nice as his original it's far too messy for my tastes. I like what gameboy posted originally, I'd suggest adding something like a shed/bush or tree to the foreground grass. Heck, maybe even just a simple "Do Not Walk On The Grass" sign. Other than that, I like :)

gameboy

Well, have to say, I kinda like InCreator's paintover. And I get what he meant with it. That the boring plain areas could use some textures.
Which means to me - to get back to work.
