Looking for some comments & criticism.

I'm not really happy with his pants, and I cannot for the life of me draw a beret. (Yeah, that's supposed to be a beret.) He's a futuristic smuggler in the employ of a military group; he's trying not to look too conspicuous, hence the beret and boots. Also, he's supposed to be a somewhat older guy - 40's - but I have no clue how to show that.

(This is actually the same pilot character I posted a long time ago - although he looks completely different now.)

[Edit: Ach, I noticed a few places where the outline/shading is interrupted... I thought I got them all, but apparentely not. In any case, imagine they're there until I can get a new version up.]

he looks like he is 20 and the barret and boots look like part of a uniform. Add wrinkles, grayish hair, and maybe some color

I like it. It's hard to draw it angled without it looking silly.

You did a good job already, he looks in his late 30s. :)

I did a quick paintover, I hope you don't mind:

- Angled the feet a bit. Works better than the dead-on view IMO.
- Tilted beret a bit more
- Darkened shading
- Added some (subtle) wrinkles to the eyes

QuoteAdd wrinkles, grayish hair

Yeah, do that.

I like it BUT....

His crease in his tousers at the knees makes it look like wrong - they look like action fiure joints - Shade the bottom sections of the leggs up to this line and the erase it - i think that that may look better - maybe you don't. Oh Well.
He looks militaristic. The whole wardrobe looks like a uniform.
I don't like the bag strap(??) because there's no shading on him from it.
Plus i notice you avoided his hands - You're gonna have to do them one day!!

All that aside (Which is only MY view) It's an alright pic. What's the game?
Eagles may fly high, but badgers don't get sucked into jet engines.

One thing nobody has mentioned yet; the man has no crotch! I had to rectify the situation, plus I shaped the arms and shoulders a little more. He looked slightly top-heavy. And also, his pants, they look ultra-tight or metallic or something, so I gave them a few specular highlights. Here's my take:

Anyway, just my opinion.

EDIT: Oh, and I stole strazer's paintover to do all of the above. :)

Ok, I had a go with it. I tried to add some lighter shades to it along with the dark ones. I had a go at adding depth to the boots with shadings and messed around with other minor things. Here's what I got:

- Edited boots with shading to give them more depth. I also changed the laces a little.
- Added a lighter shade, added shading and changed some shading.
- blended the pads out with the jacket.
- Messed with the shading some more to make it seem as if the clothes overlap a little more.
- Messed with the face a little.

Minor Changes
- I added a collar to his jacket.
- I added a shadow for the shoulder strap.
- Lowered the crotch area since it was really high. XD

What about giving his face a little expression? like angry, clever, serious of happy look? And feet, they're too straight. Move both a bit to the side, each to each, so even if he's supposed to stand like a solider, his feet could give him support for this, too.

Wow, thanks guys! Unfortunately I haven't had time to work on this again, but I will tonight and get an update posted.

A few responses:

QuoteHe looks militaristic. The whole wardrobe looks like a uniform.

Well, the jacket is something the military gives to its civillian people working with them, and he is a former military guy.

QuotePlus i notice you avoided his hands - You're gonna have to do them one day!!

:D Yeah, I know. But as a matter of fact, that's actually how I walk most of the time, albeit carrying a set of notebooks behind me. (He will show his hands when he walks, though... most of the time.)

QuoteWhat's the game?

It's called Payload, as in my signature. I won't say more at this time, until I get enough work done to feel comfortable putting up a thread in GIP.

QuoteWhat about giving his face a little expression?
He'll change expressions in the game. This is the base for those animations. (For some reason, I love making lots of little animations for characters, even though I'm a pretty sad animator...)

Just a very minor thing, but his knees look far too high to me. With boots that big, shouldn't the knees be about 2/3 of the way down his trousers, not 1/2 way? And, as has been said, he looks a little militaristic, especially if he's trying to be inconspicuous. Although, I suppose that depends on what everyone else looks like.
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

Redwall

Yeah, he's at a military base for the first part of the game, which is why the military stuff helps him look inconspicuous. Sorry if that wasn't clear before.

And I've updated the first post with a new version.
