In this sequence my main character draws a gun and fires it.Ã,  I put a lot of time into it and was looking for some feedback.Ã,  :-\

I'm concerned that his arms get skinnier as he points the gun.
Is this a problem?

DanClarke

he needs to make an action stance when he fires, perhaps he should take half a step back, as if to brace for the backfire of the pistol. Its pretty cool apart from that.

Minimi

Yes, it does look cool, just some c&c to make it even better.

I don't know what style your game is, but you don't need to tell pang, because I guess all people understand that he shoots. You could say the line "pang!", as message in AGS.

Second the same as Danclarke. Try to make him take a pose with his legs. I don't know how you drawed the characters, but if you used layers, like I draw them, then just simple redraw the legs and reposition everything else.

And last thing, is that when you fire a gun, you shock alittle right after the shot, so you could let him shock alittle back, at the moment of the shot.

But it is really one nice animation! Keep up the good work! Yes, animating takes lots of time! :(

Good work!

Maybe you could add a short pause when he reaches for his gun (when the hand is in the coat), and make the gun smoking after firing longer.

EDIT:
Here's what I ment.

-created a pause when he reaches into his coat
-added a recoild when he shoots
-removed the bang letters
-added lighting when he shoots
-animated the smoke

I hope this helps you.

LGM

There's no recoil when he shoots.

And yes, he should make a stance. Nobody shoots with their legs together.

Other than that, it's what everyone else said.
You. Me. Denny's.

Esseb

Depends on the effect. The animation reminds me of the scene from Raiders where Indy unexpectedly shoots the sword wielding guy like it was an every day occurence. If that's not the intended effect I would start over with the animation.

He does put the gun back in his pocket too fast so change that, and add the recoil suggested by others.

Blane

;D Great! But here are my suggestions:

He draws his gun with more of a flash, like he just pulls it out to shoot his enemy

                    -OR-
Slowly, menacingly, draw his gun, as though he's evil and saying "I might have to kill you "snicker snicker"..."

              -AND-
If you choose Idea 1, then might I suggest the gun to slightly pull back (Not much) vibrate, and when he draw it the guy's legs spread out sortof?

              -OR-
If you chose using my Idea 2, then may I suggest the slight pullback and vibration of the gun, and a small satisfied smile of staisfaction???

TELL ME WHAT YA THINK!

The Faction

I've taken some of the suggestions and added a recoil. Also he spreads his legs before firing now

Let me know if this is better.
My next step will proabably be adding a lighting effect as Damien suggests.
Thanks

Phemar

It looks as though his he drops his gun back in his pocket, instead of putting it there. The stance he goes into now doesn't really better, the old one was better.

I really like the animation. While i agree with suggestions about his pose, it's also important to know how realistic do you want animations in your game to be anyway. Judging by the style of character, i'd say your animation is very suiting. The viewer knows what's going on and that's the most important.

I did 2 suggestions how to make his pose more realistic (one hand shoting and 2 hand shooting), but such change in his pose would require quite complex animation, to make it look believable... It depends if you want to bother...

Haddas

I think he needs to have a shooting face! y'know, he needs to make a face while shooting!

DragonRose

Haddas: He is! His eyes narrow when the gun comes out.
Sssshhhh!!! No sex please, we're British!!- Pumaman

Haddas

Yeah. But I mean more of a grin! I know his eyes narrow, but it isn't enough for me. It just doesn't turn me on like it used to.

Eggie

Try making him lift his leg before it goes forward rather than just have it sliding out.

The Faction

I've edited the animation again.Ã,  I added a lighting effect as the gun is fired and changed his legs so the sliding effect is reduced. Also his facial expression was tweaked in the frame that the gun fires.

So is this an improvement or should i just use my original?
Thanks.

TheSaint

uh, u'll hate me but he should simultaneously grasp the jacket with left hand and start backing left leg a bit, then reach with his right arm and draw gun. not fast not slow, then straighten the arm and after that ur animation is allrite, u can get it back by puttin all images in reversed order.

cheers,
TheSaint

I think your first animation is better than the others because there would need to be more movement for it to look good with the foot step, so I'd stick with that.

I was bored so I made this little animation maybe just to kick start your animation for later animations [if he shoots his gun all the time this animation I made probably wouldn't be the best choice cause it's so dramatic]

Colossol,

your animation is really mesmerizing...it looks as though all the body parts have weight, really good.  can you tell me how you go about making an animation?  do you use any software?

TheSaint

nice animation i agree Colossal, but i still think thats character, from a position he is in at start, will rather step back and draw gun, just try to do what u draw and ull c my point.

I think one thing that makes Mr C's animation so good is the overkill (is this the correct term?).

If you look at the arm especially, it goes a little lower than the final position before snapping back up. This makes it rigid & 'bouncy' in a way, & you'll notice the whole body bounces in the same way a little.

Also, the lines drawn back from the arm as it lowers shows the speed at which it is moving.

The main thing with such an animation is exaggeration. Of course a arm & body would never move exactly like this, but it is what the viewer expects, so it works well.

These are the features which make it such a good animation.

Oh, and also, the body position contributes to this. It demands respect, sucka!

EDIT: Wow. My 500th post may have actually been useful to someone.
