Concept art for an upcoming game

I'm currently developing a game featuring two gangsters as protagonists (sort of like Sam&Max -style). I'm still in the script/plot phase, but today I had a feeling I should make some concept art for the game to set the mood for my imagination.

Here is top view of an apartment block. Similar scenes can be found in all great games, such as P:DA and Larry Vales 1.

And here is an indoor view.

These graphics are probably not used as such in the game, but with a little plot-forced modifications they might be. So, would you play a game looking like this?

Minimi

i play any adventure!! :P ... but yes, at first side the graphics look good, only bit empty ;D

Gonchi

Those screenshots look great, but like the guy with the Strong Sad face said, they're a bit empty.

A suggestion for the first picture would be adding some cracks to the roof edges, and maybe a little lake of rain water that didn't drain well (I know there's a word for that... can't remember what it is now). You could also add a bit of light to the buildings in the back, like, say a couple of windows are lit up and others aren't. Probably add a blinking light to the tower too. It's not much, but it really improves the picture a lot.

For the second one, I'm not sure what type of room you're trying to make, but a lamp hanging from the roof would be a good start. Perhaps a side table next to the door. You could add some blinds or curtains to the window, and if it's a living room, you could fit a couch and maybe a TV or an Audio system or something... dunno... whatever... it's your game… and I'm just an internet addict with too much time on his hands and not enough sites to fill it up with.

Minimi

1. yes its me strong said
2. why always cracks in the roof??
3. drainpipe is the word
4. who would leave their lights on, when its daylight??... no I suggest put some curtains for it, though, that doesnt make any sense also! :p

SLaMgRInDeR

they're realy good, but for the second one, the room and the walls are in a like tilted, strange style, and the waals are kind of either parralelltgrams or trapeziums, but the window is completely square.

I love the tweisty perspectives, so long as they remain tweisty thruout the game!

same here, i like it, but the window needs to fit with it. oh and if that window you can see in the first one is supposed to be the same one as in the second, you need to add curtains in the second or take the curtains out of the first.

To Minimi (Strong Sad face guy);

1. I thought so.

2. Because there really isn't anything else to add to a roof. Except a large H for Helicopter landings which I doubt this building would have... then again, I don't really know what kind of building it is. Anyway, adding cracks would make the rather plain looking roof slightly less plain. Besides, just about every roof has some cracks here or there.

3. Well... no. That's not the word I was looking for. Anyway... you know how after it rains there's always a patch of water on the street or on the sidewalk? Well, that's what I meant... or I think so anyway. I was pretty tired when I made the post.

4. Well... I'm pretty sure I suggested adding curtains to the picture somewhere... and I have lamps hanging from my roof and I keep them off during the day. That doesn't mean I take them down and then replace them when I want to turn them on. Anyway, if that was the case, and the lamps were taken down, shouldn't there be a hole with some wires hanging out? A lamp CAN be hanging from the roof without having to be on, and it would also mean he needs to place a light switch somewhere on the wall, which means he gets to fill up some more of the picture. There, we killed two birds with one stone, now we have a lamp and a switch. Let us celebrate with a glass of mountain dew!

Trapezoid

I really like the second picture. Surreal...
I'm currently developing a possible game idea about two semi-gangsters (more like anti-gangsters, actually), hope it's not too similar.

magintz

I agree with minimi the backgrounds do look a bit empty, try to liven them up with everyday objects such as.

1)litter, junk, cracks in walls, dirt, pigeons, antenna, roof shack thing etc...
2)Coffee tables, lamp shades, magazine rack, armchair?

could any of these suggestions help?

A part form that I like your style, keep up the good work :D
When I was a little kid we had a sand box. It was a quicksand box. I was an only child... eventually.

Puddle.

It's nice, was it made in a 3D engine?

Gonchi

Puddle! YES! That's the one!

You have my eternal gratitude... here, have a rice cracker.

Rincewind

Yeah, I certainly would. It's a nice, colourful style.
The second one is definately my favourite.

Hi there,

Just make sure when your warping raster planes you adjust the sharpness accordingly. On your second image - the warped ends have lost a little definition after being warped - and will require a sharpen (as the adjacent texture is extremely sharp).

Other than that - looking good as a couple of base images.

Wow, I've got more replies than I've thought!

Most of you seemed to think those bgs are a tad empty. Well, you are quite correct, they need objects and stuff. And the walls on the first pic need cracks, dirt and stuff. imho it also needs more colour, I just couldn't think where I'd put it :D

Trapezoid: my gangsters are sort of anti-gangsters too,  I don't think anyone would want to play a character who calmly kills and tortures people. But there's still a lot of space to be different ;D

That's a good point. I guess I should first make them hi-res and lower the resolution after warping. I can't think of other way to do that.

It's made with the Gimp, the king of all programs. I, uh, ahem, *cough* took a screenshot of the 6 day assassin and drew on top of that. Did anyone guess that? The "old masters" of 18th century learned to paint in a similar manner, so I thought it wouldn't be bad practise for me, either.

So, I'll be adding more stuff and junk to the bgs in the future. Thanks for great advices.
