Walkcycle Down and Still Frame-Idle

There's something wrong, besides the fact that he's not bouncing (I can't make him do that... Whenever I do, it seems really broken and crappy) Sorry, but I'm not all techno-geeked up. I can't give you a higher res pic of the walkcycle. Every time I try, I just wind up ruining it (I have to increase the size of every frame independently, and since I can't do that perfectly it jumps all over the place)... I hope this is cool. It's the first piece of art I've tried putting in the critics lounge...

I'll try to get back with a side view tomorrow. I really suck at up cycles, though...

For those of you who played the first ESPER game, is this an improvement? He looks better, I think, but is he usable or should I just stick with the old one? Also, I would really prefer all the clothes that are on him that are grey were black, I just have no idea how to do that without making it look... umm... bad.... I thought about using the old "blue highlights like in Superman's hair" technique, but that made it look like he was wearing really loose spandex.Ã,  Ã, :o

PS: I suck at this. Could one of the mods please edit this post so it doesn't look like it was sneezed out of the nose of a being called the Great Green Arkelseizure?

You need to make his upper body turn left and right as he walks. It looks strange that his arms are moving and yet his chest is staying perfectly still.

The charachter looks great, I cant give much advice on walkcycles as I havent really done one yet. All I can think of is watch how other people walk to get a referance to how he should walk.

In your walkcycle, his arms move in phase with his legs (his right arm forward as his right leg moves forward, etc.). However, in reality people walk with their arms in counter-phase to their legs (your right arm moves forward as your left leg moves forward, etc.). That's the main reason why it looks wrong.

It looks pretty good otherwise, though.

What Snarky said.

Plus, he's too stiff, make him loosen up a bit as he walks, other wise he looks like he's a robot or something.
Watch, I just killed this topic...

And of course, not just the arms but also his shoulders need to move as he walks. Basically, in a walk-cycle, leave as few things static as you can. It's more work, but it'll look better and after all, you're gonna be using it throughout your game.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm off for the next two days, and I only have internet at work. By the time I get back, I should have completed side and up walkcycles to go along with this, and maybe fixed this one up a bit.

Not necessarily true. There are lots of people who walk like esper's character. It's called ambling. Not as common as being left-handed, but still quite common. However, what I think looks wrong is that he is moving his arms so close to his body. It's almost as if he is stroking his hips.
Diversity is divine!

Thanks all. I changed the way the shoulders work, and made the front of his shirt shift left and right as he walks. I'm also almost done with the side walkcycle, but I'm on my work computer right now and can't get it uploaded. And if anyone wants to do an up cycle, that would be great: I don't even know where to begin on that :(

You know something? I think that the sprite, comparing to the BG on the other critics thread seems to me a bit too cartoonish. NO--- It's too "clean", not cartoonish...

Anyway I know you're probably looking for walkcycle advice and not for the sprite itself, but it just struck me when I saw the BG.

I have to strongly object. Walking with your hands in phase to your legs is very rare, and will look extremely odd in any walking animation. Regardless of the percentage of ambling people, just avoid it like the plague if you want a credible walk cycle.
