Dark office bg

My first background, it's supposed to be the messy office of a P.I. (who is saving on his electricity bill, hence the darkness). I realise I still have to add the dropped shadows, so I'll add them later...

Any comments?

Thanks.

Drey.

Wow, that is very nice, I can think of but one ding, the glass bottle and cup look TOO transparent, like they are half invisible, rather then transparent. IMHO

Very nice background ^_^ Is that table with the glass, bottle and ashtray an important part in the bg? If not, it might be nice to bring that part to the background(of the background ;)) by desaturating and darkening it.
You could also put some texture on a whole bunch of things, unless  you want to keep it clean.
Oh and the overal could maybe be a bit darker, whatever you want.

Looks cute!

One thing that leapt at me was the lighting coming from the blinds. Where it meets the desk the lighting should change angles as its hitting a vertical surface as opposed to the horzontal floor.. Aparty from that it's a unique style and it looks cool, keep it up!

This is a really cool bg. I would so love to play a game with graphics like this.

I agree, though, with the people who said the bottles look ethereal and the light from the blinds (which looks awesome) should be vertical where it hits the desk.

<tiny nitpick> The curled up part of the rightmost paper on the bulletin board seems large compared to the overall size of the paper. Because it's right in the center of the bg it keeps drawing my attention. </tiny nitpick>

To open the composition, I would place a part of the window sticking out of the left side.

Great bg, I'm looking foward to see it finished.

Very nice, I like it! ^_^
It's a small nitpick, but is the bulletin board a bit skewed? (I know it's crooked, but it seems bit parallelogram-ish).  That could definitely just be me, though ^_^

You guys like handing out credit for free?

Quick paintover...

I tried to meet some of your suggestions, so...
- made the bottle and stuff less etheral
- made the 'blind-light' hit the desk in upward direction
- made the overall picture a tiny bit darker

Luckily the whole setting of the story is kinda dark, 'cause I'm as colourblind as an ox.

As for textures, I try to avoid them as much as possible. They easily become too digital.

The rest of your much admired comments will be taken care of, like tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice.

Someone posted a link to the Color Schemer someplace, and it's my new fiance. I didn't think there was anything wrong with your color choices but you might get some use out of it anyway. It's the coolest thing ever.

Great background, not much to improve, but it would profit a lot from corrected perspective:

Hey nice BG
You can't really see it in your new versions and the paint overs but the ash tray looks like its sitting at a wrong angle to the table. I don't know if I'm right but it kinda stuck out to me.
Other wise I love it!

KhrisMUC: I think thqat you're the first person to notice that perspective is soooo off...

But for some reason I personally don't seem to mind that much. I mean it creates a somewhat more clostephobic feeling maybe... But you are right. Perspective is off a lot.

Ali

I'm not sure perspective is that much of a problem:

It's only significantly off around the top left corner of the room, and I don't think it spoils the image. The style reminds me of an Amiga game about a murder on a boat. I can't remember the name though...

My only suggestion would be that you think about the contrast in the room. It's quite dim, rather than dark. Noir films used dark darks and a small amount of very light lights.

On the other hand the gently contrast and sepia tones are quite charming, just more Hercule Poirot than Sam Spade.
