Howdy. This here is my first background of a cow barn.

1x:

2x:

I'm not too sure about the lighting around the candles and window. Is is too much? Too little? Also, the edges around the cows look choppy, and the crate at the bottom right seems out of place.

And about the room itself; it seems plain. I think I need to add more items to it, but since I'm not a farmer, I have no idea what I should put inside of a cow barn. I can't put any electrical items in it because the game takes place in the early 1900's.

Any help is appreciated.

The sleeping cow doesn't look like he's lieing down, try to refrain from using the 'Z' unless it's a cartoomy game.

I don't know, but the pixels on the wall look funny as if they're going in the wrong direction, and the candleholder looks a little too bright. But otherwise very good work!

You may want to show more of the sleeping cow's udder, so that it's facing us more, giving a better impression of the cow actually lying down, and not just crouching or something. I dunno.

Other than that, I personally like it.

Beautiful shading and lighting.  As for more items, just add mabye a pitchfork or a barrel of corn kernals

All in all it's pretty good.

It needs some shadow casting.  There are three bright light sources visible and some sharp lighting effects, but there's no shadows.

There's some decent shading (the hay) but nothing is casting shadows.

Might want to play around with it!

You could add scythes, harness, rope, rakes, shovels, hay bails, buckets, hammer, saws, etc.

The box in the bottom corner wouldn't look out of place if you added some shading to the backside of it, and made it cast shadows.

Good start though!

Perv!

I like the lighting and the cows - they're CUTE!
Maybe a bit more definition to the crate in the foreground, and make the walls a bit less blurry. Plus some props as Darth said.
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II

Well, here's my second attempt at the barn:

- added a rake at the bottom left hand corner and bag near the crate
- tried to add shadows to parts of the background, but I don't feel that they turned out well. =/
- darkened the crate at the bottom
- sharpened the back wall a bit
- redrew the sleeping cow

... I think that's all. Any more c & c would once again be appreciated.

much better. Add something to the top left corner space for some added kick.

I have to say that i really love this background.  To me, it has a wonderful personality.

It reminds me of Harvest Moon (a farming sim RPG thats been on the consoles)

Wonderful work Dart!!

I'm gonna whip out a word i don't use much, but here goes....CUTE

Funny that you should mention that game... Harvest Moon was the reason I chose my adventure game to be about farming in the first place :). In fact, my character is modeled after Jack (but with some tweaks here and there).

I'm getting Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life next month. I'll pick up some ideas about what farming items to put in my game when I play it.

Pet Terry

Really nice, very moody, but I don't like the perspective. You may want to look here ( http://user.tninet.se/~vqb114l/ilb/tutorials/pers.htm ) how to fix it. Overall nice job, keep it up.

I think Petteri is right about some perspective issues.  Though they don't bother me at all with this piece.

I did a quick (really quick) paint-over to better explain my 'shadows' obessesion :)

* you have 3 light sources so getting shadows right is tricky.  This isn't really all that accurate!

Feel free to use/discard as you wish.

I think it would be safe to get rid of the candles in this picture. Why would some1 light candles in the middle of the day and leave them in a wooden barn full of dry hay?

Dart

Thanks, Darth. :-D I have problems with shadows. I'll be sure to use yours and give you credit.

And LostTraveler...  er... I really don't have an answer for you. -_- I think I'll only keep those candles lighted when it's nighttime in the game.

And perspective-wise... even with the tutorial, I wouldn't know how to change it, so I'll just stick with this.

Like the new sleeping cow much better than before. Looks much more natural.
