Hi i just wanted to show you the background i've made so far and ask what you think about it

And here's another

It gives me the impression of an unfinished background, which is not exactly clear from your post.

There are things still missing, in my opinion, but I can't tell if it is because you forgot, or didn't know, or because you're not there yet.

There are no details. I would love to see many more black (out)lines everywhere.
The clouds are empty, although the colouring is there.
There are no shadows.
The trees are way to simple and with no details as well.
The colouring needs variation.

Note that by details I mean the way you did the right tree trunk in the corner, for example. many black lines and different colouring in every part of the trunk (more or less).

Anyway, my feeling is that you still didn't have time to do the things I mentioned.

It seems really really great and well done.

One idea would be to make the bmp into png, or jpg and post it here with image tags [ img ] without the spaces. :)

It looks to me almost as if it's been cut-and-pasted together from somewhere else ... As Nikolas says the bulk of the trees - and most of the rest of the background -  are lacking in detail (although, I like them that way - it's a nice, clean style), while other parts (the tree trunk, the Well, the riverbank and the rock in the lower left corner) have far more detailing and so don't quite fit (the Well in paticular make me think of the Asterix books, for some reason). They also seem to have JPG artifacting, which the rest of the image doesn't. And the far tree looks like a different style than the nearer one ('darker version of the body colour' outlines and details on the trunk, vs black outines and a 'flat' trunk).

None of these style are bad, I just think you should pick one and stick with it.
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

ok i'll try and fix that...i just wanted to try out that cartoonish style with not so many details but i saved some stuff with more details because i wasn't sure which style i wanted to use hehe

I kinda like it.... It's nice and simple.... I think it might need a few more brighter colors though. The colors seem kinda dull but I think it has lots of promise.... You should pick one thing in your picture at a time and keep working on adding more and more detail to that one thing and keep up the process..... Not that I really know anything about art though.....

I kind a like the style in the tree in front and partially on the top of the well. So I would go with that style. Some parts look exactly like they have been scanned from a comic book. Those should be painted over or, like some parts seem to be, smoothed with smart blur. But this would then require to manually fix the line art.
So I would go with the style you used on the tree. 3-tone shading with outlines. And when you make your sprites with same style they'll fit right in.

KillerKlown

Hey it looks really nice but you should stick to one style though, I like the less detail style :D keep up the good work

It looks great...sort of like a Disney/Cartoon look.  If I were playing an adventure game with these graphics, especially an amateur one, I would not find anything wrong with these graphics.  They're not detailed, but that was probably what you were going for.

Problems?  None particularly.  You might consider adding some clouds or something to the background of the second pic, sort of like in the first background.  The well in particular does stand out in the picture, just a bit more detailed than the surroundings.

Also, consider what in your background is going to be animated.  You may have already thought about this, but even if the background looks good, walking through a static picture in-game is not so great.  For example in the first picture, it looks like there are some bees in front of the hive; if those aren't animated in the game, it might look a bit strange.  You might also consider having a slight movement animation for the water.  In the second...smoke from the chimney?  Of course, this is just for the final game; the backgrounds as they stand, again, are great.

Buckethead

these BG's remind me of a comic... cant remember the name though (damn that sounded cliche...)

Andail

It looks a lot like a simplified versions of any of the french/belgian comics from the 60's and 70's. Like Peyo or Uderzo, for instance.

Mouth for war

Yep! the comiclook is the style i like ;)

One thing I notice is that there not enough saturation. The greens are too drab and the browns are too dull. The blues are too grey, and the golds are too boring.

I think the screens are from Asterix and Obelix series. ;)

You mean like, the car in the second one looks exactly like the one Asterix used to drive? ;)

Das Plans

Hi there!

Don't get me wrong, please - these backgrounds look mighty great. But (here it comes ...) they remind me of several comics, too.
For example the well and the river bank in the first one - they look a lot like the stuff from "Asterix and Obelix". Most of the other elements remind me of Disney-drawings. Now, is that goo or bad? Well ... These pictures somehow remind me of composite backgrounds, generated by some "make your own game in three days"-software ... except for that car, which seems oddly out of place. But, overall, I like the style. Cartoon-style is always to my liking. If you can manage, to fit your characters into these backgrounds, everything's fine ... And I wouldn't care for more detailing, either.

I guess, that was not helpful at all.Ã,  ;D

What I wanted to say is: I like the style, but it lacks personality, because I always ask myself "Where have I seen that before". But I think, that would by my personal problem ...?Ã,   ;)

Mouth for war

No the screens are NOT from asterix comics hehe even if you think so...thanks for giving me critic..it helps

Proletarian

But they are from...? It's funny how some parts of the pictures seem drawn by a professional artist, but the others are made in a way different and amateurish way. By saying that I don't mean they'd suck or anything. Composition is nice and things that you've drawn by yourself are nice too. And I think most of people would appreciate if you drew your backrounds as whole yourself. It's the own style that makes an artist, you know.

But tell me if I've understood wrong. If those certain parts are drawn by yourself and the rest are just raw sketches, let me know :P. And in that case, it'd be better to finish those pictures ;)
