Sam.

im trying to emulate Yahtzees style in the Days games. I basically started from scratch with a screen dump as a reference, any tips?

Bye bye thankyou I love you.

What's the point of trying to emulate his style? His style is basically a way to disguise programmer art. If you're going to emulate a style, you should spend time imitating better graphics instead.

your motive doesn't interest me, really. If you want to do this, do this.

The foom is functional, I would however suggest a non-gray noise gradient on the walls, makes the place look dirty but not good-dirty.The furniture need a lot of work, and try to shade down with more saturation-killed shades. There's no subsurface scattering going on in furniture to make darker shades more burned.

Less saturation on these neon orange shelves!

But emulate?  >:(
That's not a way to go. Correct thing to do would be...
Improve!!!  :D

hehe. buloght is doing his master's degree in programming and look at his art in his kludden game. so i dont know what you mean by "programmer art"? i think yathee's style is really well done.

BB didn't say that good programmers are automatically bad at creating gfx.

OT:
The ground's shading looks odd, and you should give some thickness to the shelves.

well, i didnt say he did. some people could just interpret it like that. i was just saying some programmers are excellent at art. so i wanna know what "programmer art" means. i havent heard the term before, and im just wondering if it is some sort of graphics term im not aware of.

It's a well-known games industry term for a piece of artwork made by a programmer, to stand in for artwork that an artist hasn't supplied yet, to allow him to get on with programming. It's generally bloody awful.

thanks steve. i understand. although, i dont think yatchee's art is awful.Ã, thinking about how u explained it, i dont really think yatchee's art falls under this term at all. :D
again, not everyone around here (like me) knows every game term.

Anyways... Zooty, go for any style you like(cuz I don't care). I think you should change the color of the furniture like mentioned above, and I would make the room less empty. In 7DAS, Yahtzee puts vents and other stuff and I makes it look less empty, not that I would put vents, but at least something.

BTW: If you're trying to emulate Yahtzee style, I say you're very close.
Cool stuff I found out: Men are four times more likely to be struck by lightning than women.  Wow, really? [dirty joke] Maybe this has to do with the fact that us men have "lightning rods"? [/dirty joke]

Nice one Zoot. There's just one thing I'd like to point out. In Yahtzee's backgrounds the vanishing point is higher. So that the ceiling can't be seen from the inside at all.

IMO it's great start to a functional bg.

It needs a bit more detailing. The door looks pretty bare, and that couch (?) on the left looks too plain. The panel near the door lacks a bit of volume. As somebody mentioned, shading should be consistent (I'm referring to the door and the wall)

But it's pretty much usable as it is.

I don't have anything against emulating somebody else's style. I developed my own from simplified emulation of DOTT bgs. Emulating is only a starting point.

In actual fact, I quite like Yatzhee's style. I think it's extremely functional. It allows you to create lots of reasonable-looking bg's without too much effort.

I personally think it's the right way to go if you want to get your games finished and if you don't fancy yourself as a great artist.

But that's just my opinion.

Sam.

that was the exact reason im trying to emulate his style, im not really trying to improve my art skills, i have alot of ideas for games and want to get them finished without the art being shitty. I think yahtzee did it well, and its a style i think i can match, with a little effort and practise.

I applaud your idea Zooty. Keeping it simple is the way to go for us mortals.

Well, heck, Yahtzee's style reminds me of the old LucasArts style as it is... I'd say that's what big brother is really emulating. Just sayin'.

And there's nothing wrong with that. In a way it's actually kinna cool. You know, all retro an' junk. I say go with it.

But I also have to chime in about those shelves. Too bright, IMHO.
