Hi! I haven't had much experience in coloring in portraits. The style I'm aiming for is that classic 90s adventure game look. Probably more Sierra than anything. Does this look alright? Anything look odd?

It's based off a black & white sketch that was done by someone helping with the game.

Thanks for any comments!

Hey! I like it, it's looking good. Not much to critique actually ;D I think you got the style down quite nicely.

gameboy

I second that! Looks great.

Well 3 things, but not so much a critics as opinions - she kind of looks angry/slightly evil. And the 3 things that'll fix that (unless she is supposed to be angry/evil):
- her lower lip is uneven in thickness (and lips are a bit uneven in width, when we look at the symmetry of the face) - right now she looks like she's bitting her lips. Yes, in a 3/4 view some distrotion does happen, but this is like a 1/4 view, so the distortion wouldn't not be so severe, if at all (hair, on the other hand, could use a little less symmetry, maybe remove a 1-2 px edge of the hair on the left side).
- you might wanna raise the middle part of her eyebrows, just a tad - it'll make her look less mad
-her pupils are uneven, and you might wanna try moving them a bit more in the center of the eyes (height position wise, not width)

Everything else, even without "corrections", looks really nice.
I don't want the world, I just want your half

cat

She looks angry and smugly. If she is the villain in the game - perfekt job!

Corby

Thanks! Well, I'll stick to this style then.

I agree, there is some smugness/anger in her face. She's actually the protangonist, so she should shouldn't look liike a villian. She's supposed to be serious though, so I'll give her a 15% reduction in anger with the help of Anian's advice. :)

Matti

I think it looks very nice altogether. But there's something strange with the anti-aliasing going on. Sometimes it's missing, sometimes it looks weird. You should work on that some more.

I made some rough lines to show the important parts.

Snake

I think it looks completely awesome. The only thing I don't like is that she looks like the main character in the NBC show, Chase.

I can't stand that woman.
Grim: "You're making me want to quit smoking... stop it!;)"
miguel: "I second Grim, stop this nonsense! I love my cigarettes!"

Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens

As Matti says, work on the aliasing a bit and you should have a great portrait.  It reminds me of some of the TSR roleplaying portraits from the 90's, so you're definitely on to something!

Tenacious Stu

Really good, I think if you were going for a serious look, you nailed it. I also really like the frosty border!  ;D

Corby

Thanks!

Fixed some anti-aliasing here.

Also, I wonder if just more of a smile would help with her look less angry. I tried the raising of the eyebrows as well for comparison below. I could also use the raising eyebrows for her speech animation later.

Slight color loss from the animated gif.

Thanks! I was actually studying Eye of the Beholder and Lands of Lore for this.

Matti

The little smile definitely helps a lot! Now she looks serious, but not angry. I can't decide on the eyebrows though, I like both versions.

cat

Don't raise the eyebrows completely, just the inner half or third. the outer part should not be raised unless for a view where you really want to raise the eyebrow for a surprised expression or something.

Make a google image search for eyebrow, this may help.

Corby

Thanks for all the help!

I'll save the higher brows for animated expressions.

Cheers!

loominous

Her semi closed eyelids and slight cross-eyedness gives her a bit of a stoned look.

By opening up the eyelids a bit more and offsetting one of the eyes, as well as adding a pixel or two at the corners of the month, she becomes a bit more natural, though also more generic.

Nice retro style!
Looking for a writer

StillInThe90s

I think the original version was fine, apart from the anti-alasing.
The new happy mouth makes her look slightly harelipped, in my opinion.

Sughly

I think loominous' looks really good. I was breezing through and was about to suggest opening the eyes a little to get rid of the 'evil look'. These adjustments are spot on in my opinion.

Corby

Thanks Loominus, I'll try adjusting those eyes a bit.
