There's some progress on my game, and I wanted to ask for your opinion on the mood/atmosphere of these screenies. The first image is a room-background, on wich a few objects are missing, as those are things to pickup ;) Second image is a frame of a cutscene in a (hopefully) scary basement.

The game will be 800x600, and the black border is held reserved for the GUI

I cannot discribe those without using the suffix "-gasm" to say the least.
Awegasmic looking. The grandfather clock needs some specular love though.

Da_Elf

does the software you use have GI? the lighting in the scenes needs a more realistic feel (unless your going for the 3d feel)

Stupot

The only thing missing from the living room is some kind of light source hanging from the ceiling.  I think some sort of little chandelier would work well with this room.  Of course it doesn't have to be switched on if you're worried about having to work the lighting out around it.

Bloody good BGs both of them.

I really like the details of the first picture. But something wonders me: There are two lamps in the scene, one in the corner and one on the table. But instead of coming from these, the light comes from somewhere above. Why not turn on the corner lamp?

Excellent detail, Minimi!

For first image, I have 4 suggestions/crits:

* More ambient light. If possible, use Final Gather or Global Illumination or simply some weak ambient lights to even contrast out a bit. Also, extra light behind window would give strong sense of realism here.

* Light is almost NEVER purely white. And for cozy room like this, white fluorescent is a crime! You should definetly use warmer light color. Add yellowish or red tone to the lights.

* Where's light source? It's cooler to use many small ones instead of one large one. Would help with contrast and too dark corners too.

* The blue couch looks totally misplaced. Paint it red or green or brown or something. It screams into my face in a room colored in mostly warm colors.

As for second image, it looks pretty cool. For crits, I simply doubt that those cellar(?) walls could be so clean and purely white. Some water damage, dirt and cracks would do alot.

P.S. On the first image, radiator looks a bit huge. I would scale it down to about 70% of its current size.

It looks like you've just placed everything randomly in the living room. Or at least you didn't think it through. Some placements doesn't make sense. Add some light sources. Move the radiator to under a window. That's where all mine are anyways. Move the plant so you won't have it in your face if you sit on the couch. Why is there a table in the corner of the room, and no chairs? Add some ambient light to your scenes.
The cut scene frame is pretty nice though. Put some shoes on the guy.

Minimi

Thanks for all your comments. I definatley have to study using lights in 3D more and more! I'm going to work on that! I'll try to make the lamps being the lightsource.

About placement of the items... it's not random, I actually thought about it, though I was even more worried about the table infront due to camera's. The table there is actually to fill the room, I wanted to place a TV on it, but I didn't. so that could be a good addition. About the blue couch, hell yeah, I'll make it red! :P

And the guy without shoes... that's supposed to be like that, it really has a reason ;)

I'll be working on some more stuff later, and as soon as I'm finished I'll update you with new backgrounds. I just needed your opinions on these ones, because as you can see, I tend to make mistakes :p

Whatever small flaws there are, these backgrounds look pretty gorgeous. May I ask what program you're using? I'm prepared to bet it's C4D...

I'm using Curious Labs: Poser Studio 6! Firefly Rendering engine

btw... i'd like to tell you offtopic... I just turned 21 years a few minutes ago!! Woohoo!!

It all looks lovely, but I have a quick thought. Try shooting/rendering your cutscenes with a widescreen aspect ratio (16:9). It'll force you to think more carefully about compositions and will look more cinematic.
