There! Like I said it's first 3f picture by me, so it's very amateur 3d-picture...

So I want some critics. What is good or what is bad in this picture... If you hate it say straight...

I can put pictures of that battery in other views!

Thanks :)

Darth Mandarb

For a first attempt it's not bad at all.

I think the texture map is nice, but the bottom part looks like plastic and it should look more metallic.  And maybe make the main body of the battery a little more on the shiney side.

Minimi

nice picture. I can see you used some basic objects like a cilinder and torus. Did you made this with 3D Studio Max? Because its looks like a 3ds render. You should adjust the light casting of the object, to make it more realistic as dart already said ;) Though nice ;)

I used free program called anim8or...

I used only one cylinder and modified it...!

Thanks...

EDIT: Oops! I just noticed that I have put that skin upwards... Minus is plus and plus is minus... I will correct that and shading............

TheYak

I was gonna mention the minus thing.

Personally, the way I would've gone about doing the end would be to create discs and bevel them.  Much of the surrounding metallic area is often rather flat.  Or ...  I would create a disc or two for the base of where it forms the top of the batter to enable me to do the "groove" towards the rom.  Then, I would create a cylinder for the "probe" end of the battery, leaving it a small distance from the rest and then chamfer it to a central circle to give it a more realistic look.  Overall, quite good really, and a very excellent first attempt.  I suppose I should get off my ass and show you what I mean but a battery fails to capture my interest enough..  sorry. :)

There are two things the metal parts of the battery need to stop them looking like plastic:

1. Specular - this refers to the highlights on the surface, in this picture they're white because of the white light source. Metal specular is generally smaller and has a harder edge than plastic. I don't know how advanced your renderer is so I'm not sure if you'll be able to correct this.
2. Environment mapping - metal looks shiny because it reflects the area around it. When modelling an entire scene you don't need to worry about this, because there's plenty to reflect. However, since you've got an object in the middle of nothing, you need to apply an image (it can be anything, really; something like black and grey trees against a white sky could work well) as an environment map to the metal texture.

Other than that, really well done. The label looks spot on; an excellent first attempt.

Kwark

just a little detail: there's no perspective. It makes the battery look as though the end with the "+"is wider than the front. This could also have something to do with the fact that the curve in the label is sharper on the front end than on the far end.

Ginny

Nice work, I like the label and the font very much :).
The metal parts look a bit plasticy as was mentioned.
There isn't much else except for what Kwark mentioned.

Mind giving us a link to the program? I might try it out. :)

Archangel: Anim8or doesn't support environment mapping. He'd have to do it manually. It's pretty complicated and time consuming.
x0z: for the 'probe' end try to do less beveling and more insetting. right now it looks sort of soft and plasticy.

New version, I think it's still too no-shiny...

Wich one is better?

EDIT: By the way, now it has perspective!

Minimi

euhm, i really wonder why you are posting your battery here? are you going to use it in a game? I can also post all my 3dworks.. but thats not where this forum is about. It's about asking help to improve your game based on art and animation, not just a simple 3d render, wich ofcourse looks fun, but there are other fora on the internet to show it.

About your updated pic... it's still not real, still plastic. It should be photorealistic to be good, i guess...

Archangel (aka SoupDragon)

Actually, minime, it's quite common for people to post not-strictly-game-related stuff here for crit. If someone's breaking the rules, I think you can trust a mod to sort it out, yes? ;)

It doesn't say only game related stuff... But I am sorry!

And Minimi Anim8or is free simple program... It's not so easy to make perfect first 3d-picture! :P

Darth Mandarb

I like the second one better, because it's getting closer to looking more photorealistic.

The top looks more metallic (though still a little plasticy).

I think that the lack of reflection on the body of the battery is all that's missing.  If you can't do that in anim8tor you could try simulating it on the texture in whatever paint proggy you use.

Looks good, Xoz! A lot better than my first 3D try! ;)

I just wanted to add that metallic and plastic surfaces often tend to reflect more when the angle at which we look at their surface is small. I think that property is called 'falloff' in 3D applications. At least in 3D Studio MAX. Check it out if you ever use a program that has it.

For this battery, it would mean that the left and right edges would have a bit of purple in them.

Another thing that would add to the metallic look would be making the surface less apt for receiving light. As in, retaining the original brightness, no matter the light.

Here's an example of it: http://www.neiparts.com/specials/images/batt/energizer_aa.jpg .

See how the black and white parts don't have any tints? They're pretty much the same color all over. And even despite that, it looks round.

You can also see an example of the falloff thing on the right side of the black surface and on the very top. See how it reflects the surface that is further away but doesn't reflect anything that is on the camera's side: you can't see your own face when you look at it, but you can see the wall that's behind the battery.

PS. On your current image, the reflection should be basically all white with very sharp edge.

I'd also like to state that this forum is not only for art that will be seen in a game. This is a board for getting better at art. Often you want to be good at art when you start making the game. Game-specific art is not as flexible. You can't change the style if you've already done half of the images. And if you get better at art halfway, you won't feel inspired to utilize the old style anymore to keep the backgrounds consistent. I think this was an issue for Rodekill when he started making Rodekill 2.

Thanks... I know those materials sucks, but I will try to make them look better! ;D

But here's the another 3d-file!

AXE Deodorant!

Ginny

Nice! I like the new version of the battery.
The deodorant is great, only thing that bothers me is the cover/cap/wahtever it's called. I think it needs more higlight because it looks a bit flat, plus it blends into the bottle a bit too much, like they're inseperable. Not sure how to fix that problem though. It might get better with more higlights. :)
