Oceanspirit Dennis and the Wandering Hamster (JRPG Sprites)

So I wanted to keep my spriting arm fresh, and I had recently discovered that OHRRPGCE is still actively in development. It being my favorite RPG program, I decided to make some OSD sprites.



Walkabout/Standing/Stepping/Attack A/Attack B/Use Item/Hurt/Weak/Dead

So, how are these? Anything I can do to improve them? And most importantly, are they Dennis?

BTW, Radiant is in need of some OSD sprites for his MAGS game. Would you mind if he used these? OSD is open source, after all.

Well, if he wants them, he can have them, so long as they remain open source. x3 I'd hoped to get some critique on them first, though, so they're as good as can be before someone uses them. x3

As I said, they have a very consoley feel to them, and especially considering the size, the amount of detail is pretty good. I'd love to see a full walkcycle, by the way!

Sorry to dig this up again, but I had some free time so I made some more sprites in this series:



Life Partner Ray is done, and a new character joins Dennis on his quest - a blue mage! Logic dictates in any self respecting JRPG that any user of monster magic has to be a beast man. And what better way to learn a spell than to be hit with it? That way you can catch more than just rabies from fighting wild animals.

I tried to make the portraits look at least a little serious, because that'll make it all the sweeter when Dennis comes out with barely intelligable ramblings.

What do you all think of these?

I did kinda miss the whole OSD thing though. I caught the start, when OSD was a piss-take of Squaresoft fanboy character design, but I took another hiatus after that point

....because OSD was a funny joke, and many of the sequels turned into 'that guy who won't stop telling the same joke'.

So, having established my complete lack of knowledge on the subject matter;

* Shouldn't Dennis be wearing cargo pants? I'd always assumed he dressed like a colorblind moron who collides with hot topic.

* I don't know if this is what you were aiming for, but Life Partner Ray just reminds me of Elton John.

* The blue mage;-  Given that it's OSD, I guess we should be glad he doesn't learn moves via bestiality....

I plan to! Unfortunately the art is practically the only part of a game I can do competently, and short of replaying all of the games, I'm not sure I remember all the things in the OSD universe, like the name of Dennis' sword and spells, or what Hansel is supposed to look like. Is that kind of stuff mutable between games? I kind of wish there was an OSD bible I could look at. I know I'm taking this too seriously for what is a silly JRPG parody, but I'd like to be consistent with the rest of the OSD series. x3

Oceanspirit Dennis has very loose and shaky continuity. I wouldn't worry too much about getting all the details right. But here are a few bullet points that most people seem to agree on:

* Dennis is the love child of Cloud Strife and Batman. He does not speak English very well. He is (often) gay.

* He has a twin brother named Kurt. (One of them may be an evil twin. Or possibly both).

* The name of Dennis' sword is (sometimes) the EmoBlade. The name of his ship is The Fancy Man.

* The names of his spells are many, and the sound effects and spell effects change depending on who is doing the game. The basic ones are Heal, Venom Spear, Burning Fury, Death Glare, and Soul Mower. If you want to add more (many people have), feel free to do so.

* Dennis is a Ninja-Pirate-Detective. He has also been a Viking-Chemist.

* He sometimes lives in The City and sometimes lives on Butt Cheek Islands.

* He once visited the legendary Foot Hills (shake screen)

* Ray is (usually) a pimp. He is the great love of Dennis' life and has tried to kill him once or twice.

* Hansel is Dennis' arch enemy (usually). Hansel is a big player in the world of fashion. He is rich and has many ninjas to do his dirty work.

There you go. Now you know as much about OSD as anyone. Go off and create some games.  8)

But you can't be consistent with that great spritework! You will violate canon by providing GREAT sprites!!!! 

Seriously: As Ponch said, continuity is shaky at best, so I really wouldn't worry about it too much. It's like RON with a much smaller cast, and technically even killing characters is nothing to be afraid of: Dennis has been dead, time-travelling, transported into a dimention where he's displayed on splitscreen, and a girl.
I daresay you can make up anything, and chances are good that people will accept (and LIKE) it!

Dennis knows about Hansel. He doesn't know about Square Penis -- that particular villain operates in secret, behind the scenes.

woaah! :o Sweet sprites, man. The battle sprites remind me of Romancing Saga 3, which is really cool.

Also Dennis recently learned the "Ovary Peeler" spell for his battle against Karen.

He has not yet battled Karen.
