Hi to all...

I am looking for the way to make the gradients of the early 90´s games. Do you remember the skies on Monkey Island 1? I´ve been told that there is a specific tool in deluxe paint to make them, but... what about Pain Shop Pro? Is there something similar?

Thank you.

Edit: Lol! PAIN shop pro! Is it a kind of Bondage shop? :)

Sorry about the misspelling.

try the program Corel Painter 8 . You can make it with it very easy. Though I dunno about psp

BOYD1981

there are gradient fills in PSP, you have to hold down the left mouse button on the colour square for a while and a little menu will pop up, then you select Gradient then click the coloured square again, which will bring up a toolbar, there are a few presets, the Sunset one is quite nice, but you can make them yourself...
one thing i do when i make low colour gradients is decide roughly how many colours i want, then i pick the two colours, then i'll create a new image that has the dimensions of the ammount of colours i want (16x16 for 16 colours etc) then fill it, and then i have my 16 colours gradient and then use them in the image, hope helps...

Maybe it depends on which version of PSP you have. Normally you can click a little black arrow on the color to the right hand side then choose either Solid, Gradient, Pattern or Null.

n3tgraph

damnit I can't remember which filter to use

Hollister Man

It is in the Adjustments category, right under Image > Mode

Well... I know to use gradients... But the problem is that 16 milion colours that´s not the "monkey island" digitallizations we know... I think the trick must be in choosing a 6 or 7 colour pallete for making the gradient...

BTW... Is there a way to download Deluxe paint in a "legal" way?

P.S. My PSP is 5.1.

Synthetique... I use noise for making the change of colours in gradients not so noticeable... I don´t think it´s the use I want.   :(

Pessi

I just tried it with PSP and the closest I could get was the following.

1. Make the gradient.
2. Add noise - 10 to 20 units (can't remember if it was percents or something else. :P)
3. Colors -> Decrease Color Depth -> X Colors. It lets you choose the amount of colors, depending on the colors in the gradient, choose 20 to 30.

It's not the same pattern as in Monkey Island 1, but it definitely is closer than with millions of colors.

I also tried it with Photoshop and the result was very close to DPaint's one, which surprised me. Not that it would help this matter, but anyway.

Dpaint's not abandonware? Well, that explains why it was so hard to find. :)

TheDude

I think the POSTERIZE effect is exactly what you'll be needing, so basically you want a gradient without the thousandsssss of colours.

Do a gradient somewhere, select it then go to Colours>>Posterize then change the Levels value to around 6 or whatever looks ok. Hopefully this is what you wanted.

TheDude

Ahh, try Pessi's way first, probably works better!

Nacho

It is very close Pessi... It isn´t still what I´m looking for, but that will work, because, as I am just trying to make the  similar style, not a copy.

I´ll try to post screenshots about what I´m looking for, and what did I get with Pessi´s procedure.

MrColossal

i have a tutorial on how to do it in photoshop, maybe it can help since they are close to one another

Ben

I think the best way is just to use Deluxe Paint. I'm not sure if it's abandonware or not, but I'm pretty sure it's not sold anymore, so I wouldn't feel guilty about downloading it. I can't seem to find a place to download it either, but I could provide a copy..
