Critique on Character Posture/Coloring

I have an idea sitting around about a western action/adventure game, but before I got in over my head (as I tend to do) I decided to make a small game to get reacquainted with the AGS engine.  So I started working on the main character and hit a wall; I don't like the stance, I'm generally disappointed by the lack of detail in the character as a whole, and I'm drawing a blank as to what to colors I should fill him with.

Something I'd like to point out, I know that the thumbs are placed incorrectly and the hands are probably way too large, but I wanted to give the feeling that the arms themselves would be more counterproductive than anything in achieving whatever objective was set before the main character, which is why he has such a large mouth.  Though I'd love to read comments on how to better portray this.

Stance - Looks a little problematic: both arms overlap the torso, which makes it a bit confusing. I had to look at it for a few seconds before I understood what it was.

Detail - There's already quite enough detail for a pixel character. If you add any more and attempt to animate it, you might come across quite a mess.

Colors - Leave him binary and make the backgrounds in shades of gray.

I think i agree he's so detailed that colours would just confuse the issue

Earl, I'm always impressed by your work. This is a cool character and I got what you were going for right away.

I saw the animation in my head right away. Him (it) rotating his hips to move his feet with his arms dragging behind. The arms looked too short for this to work well, so I lengthened them out. The feet were really complicated, so I simpled them down to make the arms more obvious. Added some color for kicks. Color works pretty well actually, but looks best on really pastel background colors.

It's still a little hard to see exactly what is deformity is, but once animated it will obvious.

PS: You're missing a black line by his eye!
