Soo... here's a nightclub. A simple one.
What I would need, is some designing ideas, like stuff to add everywhere to make place nicer and cozier (sp?).

The stuff on the left is a DJ-station and 2 speakers - unfinished since some parts will be added as animated objects, such as speaker parts and a DJ himself :D
Also, wires and cables are missing yet...

The bar counter has lack of detail aswell, but besides bar stools, I have no more ideas what to use to make it more "populated'.

Also, the place will be swarming with dancing NPC's
I planned to try to make these lights (above bar counter) flash with different colors and sending light rays towards dance zone, but I'm sure it'll be helluva scriptage again until I get it to work. Large objects and hardcore transparency use, etc... :(

So, help me think!

Chicky

needs some crap me thinks. Empty bottles, glasses etc. Stains from drinks would be cool, maybe some underwear would be fun. You could possibley add a floor platform where people dance, then maybe some strobe ceeling lights.

nice background btw, i really admire your skill.

Ali

This is a great example of well used gradients - though I think the back wall becomes too dark around the door. Maybe a hilight on the doorframe would help stop it becoming lost in the darkness. I'd suggest posters on the wall advertising bands/special offers. Posters are always entertaining, and you could have funny fake band names.

I would recommend changing the cash register on the bar counter, as it looks out-dated. Modern clubs tend to have a touch screen register behind the bar (facing the customers). I would put coasters on the counter, more backlit bottles behind the bar, some neon signs, and a few posters on the wall (advertising liquor or music).

and some tables in the foreground? There should be SOMEWHERE that anti-socials like me can eat/drink in peace

Now, with his very own game: Alien Time Zone

Evil

It all looks good except for the lights above the bar. The ones in then foreground have a nice dark fade but the ones in the background don't.  But I think it could all be fixed if you adjusted the far section. From the bookcase over looks like a paint over in a fangame. It looks very out of place.

if its a nightclub then i suggest you have the ground covered in crap  ;)

nice bg, my only suggestion would be to give thew lighting a blue tinge, it seems that those neon strips should really dictate the colour in the room. I just did a quick colour balance in PS to give you a rough idea:

AndersM

The bar itself should probably be taler, now it looks more like a desk or something. A bar normaly reaches a person to a spot between chest and navel.

The cash register looks good to me.

The thing above the bar with the lights on should probably be lower (if it's supposed to be one of those over-bar-cabinets containing glas and things)

There should probably be some stools infront of the bar, and a 'foot rail' or something.  You could pust some 'neon art' on the walls (stars, vodka/beer/whiskey names or something)

That's all i can think of by now

It looks great, InCreator!  I love the use of lights/shading you have in the picture.

I was wondering, would you mind if I used it as a sort of template to make a similar room?  I've been trying to sketch a night club looking room for months.

Acutally, I made simpler geometry quickly in 3ds max to have some kind of reference with correct perspective, since sketching a nightclub is indeed mission impossible.

So yes, you may use it.

And thanks for suggestions, people. I got lot's of ideas and I have it almost ready now.

Well, this is where I sin. I bump and double-post.  :o

Actually, I just wanted to show what happened after 8 versions and 4 days of headach-ey thinking and aligning...

I decided to keep it simple and dark.
And DanClarke's idea was superb!!!

- Despite chicky's and Thebrat's idea of crap everywhere, I tried it in 2 versions and wasn't quite happy with it. :( Stains and stuff would be pointless to do either, since final version is so dark. Some bottles and things will be of course added, but later and as objects (some puzzle ideas here ;) ).

- big brother suggested a touch-panel register, but since I'm not a frequent club goer, I have no idea how should one look like... nor will many players later. I also have no idea of what word "coaster" means and google image search resulted only rollercoasters .D

- About more neon signs - I think I have enough neon! There's some other rooms with neon too, so I don't want to overdo it.

- The counter height is made according to sprite sizes. It fits almost perfectly.

- It's a dancefloor mostly here, so tables are at the other side of the room, which isn't seen on this bg

- I have absolutely no idea what Evil said!!! :(

- Posters were nice idea and I used them.

- Volumetric light from counter lights was actually last-second-before-save-idea-flash. But they cover problems nicely and also fake more detail
** Yay! writes it up into his bg detail fake list

Well, that's it. If I get this room filled with people dancing, loudspeakers bumping and DJ rocking all in sync with background music, I'd say that this will be a helluva good job for a...
a...
...cutscene.

Yes. I draw game-critical bg's in 3 hours or so, but end up messing a whole week with a room that'll be displayed only few seconds...
what a moron. Well, nothing's solidly fixed here, not even story, so we'll see.

It looks great, InCreator.

I especially love the subtle lights above the bar--very effective mood lighting.

And thanks for the ideas--my game has three night club rooms, and I was going insane trying to figure out how to do it.  So thanks for showing it's possible, love.

I love every detail you've put in it, really nice work, i wish i could draw that kind of background in 3 hours! Damn you ;)

Btw, is there a dedicated thread/site where we can get some info about that game you're making?

Candle

Looks good , just maybe a beer sign or two would look good .

A coaster is a small cardboard bit (usually circular) that you can put your drink on.

As for a modern cash register, look here:

I think club owners found it was a bit too tempting to leave the till on the bar itself, especially during busy nights when the bartender is running back and forth.

No?
I will not put a thread into games in production forum.

I did it with "Trippin'!"
Trippin' is on hold for unknown time.
People send me PM's asking when they can play the game.
I feel guilty.

No.

But since I'm unable to keep my happiness of having another bg done... in secret, most of Henri 6 bg's are somewhere around in Critics Lounge.

Helm

It's awesome how, by following the advice in this thread you now have a background that's ten times better than the original. Good work.

Minor nitpick: the beams of light, the more they stray from the originating source, should blur out, creating more of a 'fog' effect towards the counter than straight lights. Think a room full of people smoking. Just a little bit, don't overdo it.
