Probably wrong, probably stupid, probably awful, but I need to know

Well, after that background blitz entry:

This was a lot of fun, and yes it has like 4 million flaws, but it was my first attempt at such style, and people actually liked it. Which is great.
So here are some few.

A title screen. I know it's a swastika, but please focus on the art side.

A room. Entrance of a train station.
I'd love to know if it's appealing, and if you would play a game like that. Also some edits or points would be more than welcome. Those are my first attempts so be gentle.

Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Calin Leafshade

they are beautifully atmospheric backgrounds man.

But I wonder if you'd be able to make a sprite 'fit' into that style.

They would work very well for a 1st person game though.

Anian

Didi you draw this over photos? The first pic seems to be in a bit of a different style to the 3rd one and different resolution.

Yeah, what C said,  might have trouble putting in sprites there.

I like the 2nd one, looks cool (art part ;) ).

Igor Hardy

It's a swastika!

But when I focus just on the art style I can see it's super-atmospheric.

DrewCCU

im not a fan of the first background (for the contest entry).

and the swastika was just a swastika in my eyes ... nothing special. (although it did look like a cool swastika ... if swastikas can be pronounced "cool")

but i do like the third one a lot.  However it looks too desaturated - which i understand is part of the style but what i guess the biggest problem for me is the light source. it seems like you want light to project through the doors into the room ... but i dont think theres enough contrast between what's being "hit" by the light and what's not ... it almost looks like the image is wrapped in cellophane ... if that makes any sense to you?

all in all - good art though.

I don't like the first bg either. And well a swastika is a swastika.

I doubt it, but is this an improvement to that Drew?

Swastika is not the issue.

I'm somewhat undecided on first bg and absolutely love the third.
HOWEVER, it's a bit too blurry.

With such realism, I'd expect a bit more detail. Door is very well done, but wall panels mix too much and overall feeling is like painting left into rainfall.

If feels like desktop wallpaper -- designed to blend in -- gives lots of ambience, but has no "face", no anything to particularly "look at"... That's what is missing! This isn't a wallpaper, it's not supposed to be faceless.

Add little details, shiny and sharp doorknob, thingy here and there and you have a perfect result. You have perfect canvas, now add content!

(I hope my point came through this messy brick of text)

Great points there InC!

I'll definitely work on what you said! Though I fear I'll probably not manage to.

Sorry for the double post.

...Oh god, it's so hard for me to pick one.

First

Second

Some update, and also Photobucker banned my swastika image.

Even though I prefer having "the real thing", I'd recommend censoring the swastika by, for example, replacing it by something familiar.

I'd propose a pink pony... with its eyes gouged out.

I fail to see ANY difference

Igor Hardy

I preferred the older, brighter version of the third screen.

Where has the big swastika gone to btw?

Dualnames

Banned by photobucket. Update on my previous double post, so guys can compare.

Chicky

Hey Dual, how's this?

Bit of CC, limited palette and a diffuse glow. Needs cleaning up a bit and is quite dark  :=

InCreator

Prettier, but much less practical. For a cutscene, at best.
Glow kills rest of the room, you cannot look elsewhere much.

If on original your eyes mostly scan right wall and surroundings, here - the light is only thing to see.

Chicky

Sorry?

Dualnames seemed to like it, why don't you make an edit and show us how it's done InC?

Dualnames

I liked some things on it. For certain I'd reduce the glow cause InC is right.
