Shaman's hut

Here's another background for my current project Caribbean Mysteries.

This time it's the interior of Burga the Shaman. I have been struggling with the voodoo-chair for awhile and I'm not sure if seems right. I used the Voodoo-lady's chair from MI3 as a reference for angle but like I said I'm not sure.

I also suspects that the fridge doesn't look proper but I don't know how to fix that. Also, I'm not sure about the look of the books in the shelf.

In case you wonder about the hook in the wall, there's going to be a voodoo-mask hang on it which will have importance in the game.

So... let me hear what you think about this. Bring on the C & C!

Yeah, it's Murray. Guybrush's frase in MI3 "You know, you would look great with a melting candle on your forehead" inspired me to make a in-joke for this background which is appropriate for the shaman's hut. Before you you ask: No, you can't talk to Murray in this game, he's fake.

Babar

If the chair is facing that way, it should be in the right corner. Also, its perspective (and that of the fridge) seem slightly off. Maybe you could also make the chair a bit wider?

Here's a new version of it. I know it looks unfinished but I just want to make sure that I'm going into the right direction.

What I have changed: The fridge and the chair.

What I have added: Some pattern that shows the hut's are made of dried up leafs and grass and also some wood to hold it together.

Now, I have a question to you guys: When the grass reaches towards middle of the room should the change perspective so we look right on them and then change direction when it goes to the right wall it will be opposite direction or should the grass point to right all the way through?

AndersM

looks better after the update, now you can see that it's a hut.  As you sugest by yourselve, the  I think that it would look best if the gras changes 'perspective' as it reaches the middle  of the wall. And the refridgerator should have more rounded edges, I think.

fovmester

Look at the voodoo-poster. It doesn't look like it's ON the wall. The perspective is wrong. Line the lower part up with the bottom of the wall and it'll look better (if not entirely correct).

Plus, you should add some shading to everything.  That always makes backgrounds look better.

You have a great base-image here. Keep working on it!

Your going the right way! Cool poster!  8)

-maybe some smoke over the pot
-those smilie faces on a band, somtimes i don't know if it is stuck on the wall or it is hanging(it looks flat, try to add some depth
-what is holding murray on the table, right now i would think it would fall backwards
-The chair looks really flat, maybe add some depth in it
-the cable cord: <EDIT> for the Refrigirator
*it loosk really thin, please fix that
*it doesn't follows the size of the ither things in the room, the cable cord and the thing it is connected on the wall looks really small, please fix this
-The vase:
*it looks really flat, try add some depth
    *the shadow looks fnny

well i think this is it ::)
anyway keep up the good work

<EDIT>
i am talking about the corde connected to the refrigirator

Goél: The Voodoo-pot doesn't contain any hot liquids so what's the point for having smoke there? Besides, in MI3 the Voodoo-lady's Voodoo-pot never had smoke.

How do I add the depths to the vase?

Here's a newer version. As you can see it's not finished because making the grass over the whole wall takes a lot of time.

I have made some changes on the chair so it looks more 3D and I also added some detail on it. I also put a woodenholder to keep "Murray" from falling backwards.

I also fix the fridge. I will fix the cord to the fridge soon.

Developer: I will fix some earth effects when most of the background is done.

Babar

The fridge and shelf still have the perspective wrong. From the look of the chair, the vanishing point is in the centre, but the fridge and shelf make it as if the vanishing point is to the right. Other than that, maybe the pot should be in the centre (on the round carpet thing), as it looks important. You should also mix up the grass on the wall so that it looks more natural, and not so uniform

First of all...If you're set on the christmass light dolls, I think you should at least change them to ghastly faces instead of happy faces, given the dark nature of some of the other objects in your scene.

Secondly...what are the light sources?  Is it just the dolls?  You should make the shadows consistent from the light source(s), and cast shadows on the walls of the hut as well.  And if those happy faces are the only light sources, their colorful glows should be setting the color of everything else i nthe scene.

Mats Berglinn

Stuh505:
Those are not Christmas-lights, they're tiki-lanterns.

For the lightsource, I was going to have a lamp in the cieling but then decided that the tiki-lanterns could work as lights.

I don't want to change the look of their faces because of this reason: Burga is a nice shaman, not a spooky one. He's one of the good guys, not the bad guys. If I make the scenery darker than it will make Burga seem evil, which he ISN'T.

Goél: Thanks.

I just did a quick editedÃ,  on the fridge using photoshop and the skew tool. It still isn't right but I think the fridge should run the same angle as the wall behind it. As for the bookshelf I'm not sure on that one.

BlackMan890

why not mirror the bookshelf? i mean, right now you see the right side of the bookshelf, but i think you ar suposed to see the left side of the bookshelf

No.

iIf they are lights, then why are they casting white light instead of green/yellow/red/blue light?

Anyway, I don't think that just because your character is good doesn't mean he must have dangling smily faces.  Character's can, and should, have more dimension than that.  It could be fun if the character was a bit spooky...perhaps a little scary...but still good...think of the shaman in Dark Crystal

The perspective on the fridge is much worse in that edit

Mats Berglinn

Sorry stuh, but no. I won't change the personality of Burga. It's locked, so forget it! He is a bit like the voodoo-lady in the Monkey Island games: calm, wise, clever at voodoo and have some sense of humor.

This is how he looks:

If the perspective of the fridge in the edit is not right, then how should it look like to look right? The same goes with the bookshelf.
