Simply a background

Hi everyone, I wanted to show you this I draw. I was trying a different painting/shading technique from the ones I used before and it worked much better than I expected, so I was really satisfied with the result. Please take a look at it and tell me what you think.
It's a bedroom, the bed is not laid, the light comes from above (a light bulb or something that's unseen), somewhere in the middle of the room. I know it's kind of empty, it doesn't have any foreground objects yet, it's just the plain background.
So? Is it ok? I mean, the shading and colouring of the objects and those things you always criticize, :) what do you think of it?

OoooooOooooooooo.
Nice!  :)

I have a small idea though. To show that the room is not just two walls and really four with only two being seen, you could imagine what is on the other lower right wall and mirror it so to speak.  :P If you don't want to do that, at least give the mirror a little shine. The mirror looks like a flat blue surface with no depth for the time being. Know what I mean Joe?  ;)

It's very nice, but I think the walls need some more shading. I mean, look around your room; the areas close to the light source are brighter than the others. That would also help the player know where the lightsource is exactly.

Thanks for your comments. I redrew the picture keeping in mind the details you pointed out.
How does it look now? I don't know really if the walls shading is right, maybe I should shade the corner darker or something. This time I tried a darker colour for the walls to give the image a more realistic look.
I also added an image to the mirror, though what it shows it's not on the seen side of the room, mainly because then I should add small sprites of the characters moving up there as well. :) I drew the cupboard in the same style as the rest of the room, but I think I somehow pressed something I shouldn't have and erased the shades of the cupboard. When I noticed it I had already merged it with the rest of the scene so it was too late to fix it, and was tired enough so as not to draw it again. :P
So, what do you think about the picture now?

Well what do you think? Personally I am totally speechless. I think the additions of the wall shading (good advice that!) and the mirror reflection completely livened the entire space! I just wish I could perform the same advice that I give to others. I'm horrible at backgrounds..  :'(

However, I did not think about the fact that having a mirror would mean needing a reflection of sprites that walk about in the room! I will definitely keep this in mind for my own rooms.  :-*

I like the first one better personally. I like how it looks like pencil with watercolors. But I would really like to see a character.

Kairus

The first was done in pencil, indeed. Well, just the shading, then I scanned it and painted over it. But my scanner doesn't work properly and leaves a whiter line in the middle of the pictures, that's why I decided not to use it on the second picture and do all the work on the computer.

Awesome! The only thing that bugs me is that the walls are the same colour and texture as the floor.

Jongetje

I really like the picture, there is only one thing that bugs me. I have the feeling that the bed's shadow and the chair's shadow are impossible to come from one light source. Looking at the shadow under the bed, the light seems to come from the far right, but looking at the chair, the light source seems to come from above the chair.

Anyway, nice work.

Jongetje took the words right out of my mouth.
for a light source pick a place were it should be and place all shadows facing away from it. as if they are scared of it

If i've just confused you futher, try moving a lamp around an object and watching the shadows. my art teacher showed me that.

apert from that I like it, very neat room, like in a hotel just as you arrive!

Very nice...
For some reason that chair looks a little...odd. But that just be me...

Anyone remember the TV show "Bundy"? It looks just like their bedroom. Good work.
