Finally getting off my butt and practising my skills so hopefully at some point I can make a simple game.  First I want to get my general art skills up to scratch, once I get the front view sorted I will do a turn around and then hopefully have a go at some animations. Your wisdom would be appreciated  :)

Trihan

I'm by no means an expert but I will offer my two cents regardless:

First of all, good show for not doing a rigid, still pose. That's definitely a start.

Secondly, while it's useful for beginners, pillow shading really isn't a good idea. Especially if you get into the habit of doing it.

The all-green outfit looks a little garish as well, it's too bright (and takes all the focus) with a hardish outline. Compare it to the arms which are almost invisible on that background as the outline is pretty much the same colour as the rest of it.

The shoes look a bit squishy and misshapen as well, like he's wearing a pair of giant black marshmallows.

So in short, what I'd do first of all is try to think about where your shading's going to be coming from and put in shadow/highlights appropriately, shape the shoes a bit and recolour the outfit.

Ok, because I found some time I redrew him.
I must say the hands were the best things you did.
Always make correct lineart. Here is a tutorial that will help you understand this.

.
And as Trihan said learn to dither, not a pillow shading.

I made two of them actually. To both images I didn´t use the brownish color. Made all the colors darker  and increased the contrast to each color(except black  ;) and it´s gray highlight)

First: He is maybe a bit nerdier. Bigger glasses but shorter hair and not so muscular.

Second: Bigger hair, smaller glasses and muscular torso

Hope it helps! Happy pixeling.  ;D

Thanks that's a lot to think over, I'll have a work through that tutorial and give it another shot!

I thought a palette change was in order, so I made a quick edit. Skin colors and such are not so bright, and are also a bit less saturated. I worked from Lad's edit. Also softened some outlines and changed a thing here and there. It's just a simple edit, nothing pixel-perfect, but I hope it helps.

Wow thank you for suck detailed feedback.  This is my progress so far with the lineart. I saw that you'd made the face a bit bigger and rounder so I ran with that and made it even chunkier, ( matching my normal lineart style). Since it's generally a bit bigger anyway I took your leads and added some more detail and gave him a Chinese style top.

His arms are supposed to be swinging forward to balance out his feet but it looks off so I will probably redraw those.

The recolours have given me a lot to think about too and once I have ironed out the bugs with this I'll give him a colouring in.

Mazoliin

That's quite good, but there is some things that can be done.

The leg appeared a little to feminine for my taste. So I removed the curves and the "V" in the crotch.
Also raised the armpits. And no double pixels!
I find it good to change colour on the outline as this makes it clearer to see where everything start and ends.

Azure

The colours for the colours for the limbs is a really good idea, I did use it initially since I did a rough sketch for this sprite then did over in black. So you can't see it here.

Anyway,  doing some work on this. Decided to re-draw again because I'm still fighting my double pixely ways. He looks a bit chunkier but hopefully less jaggedy. But I wanted to start again so I get used to drawing characters this way.

Had a go with some colouring not done, I choose frontal lighting but I think I am straying into pillow shading.  ???

Thanks again to everyone for their time.

Evil

Played around with the stance to make him less boxy. Did some basic shading.

It's good that you know not to pillow shade, and what you did wasn't too bad, but you're starting to put shadows where they would be on the shape, rather than on the figure. Imagine where folds would be on your pants or on your shirt. You'll want to simplify that a bit, but think three dimensionally.

Not a lot of information on what this character should be. His arms looked a bit beefy, so I kind of hulked him up a bit. Face still looks a bit babyish. Again, not sure what this character's persona is. Wasn't too sure what was on the bandoleer either.
