What do you guys think:

It seems to stand out a bit for the reason that the original background was handdrawn and my edit was done with a mouse.

Any edits and c & c is welcome.

Looks like you've taken the original sign, and done a (nearest neighbour) resize.
Looks out of place as the added bit has ignored the lighting of the original background. We all know from mi2 what that building is, and how small it is. We're familar with what it is in 2, and this will seem very alien to the player.

The original also has very little straight lines, the top sign is a square and looks really out of place.

Can't read whats on the sign (if you didnt know what the original was) due to the resize, rather than a redraw in the same style. I've no idea what the front smaller sign is.

Actually the big sign isnt a box, its bended. And as for what it says, you can LOOK at the sign in the game. Well if anyone can do a quick edit to show me how i can make it blend in with the background please feel free to do so.

ok, so half of the top and bottom is one pixel lower than the other half. It still very much sticks out because of the shape, perspective, colour and lighting.

Even if the user can look in the game, if the dialogue and object description is, lets say lacking, they wont.

It just sounds like your being lazy, and highlights that you can not emulate the style of the game to do a quite simple sign.

Peter Thomas

I'd be reluctant to say he can't emulate the style of the game, and I don't even think I'd say he's being lazy. Yes, the perspective is off, the lighting isn't quite right etc, but he's made an effort.

I think the most dangerous thing you're doing, Tanker, is just whacking NEW things on OLD backgrounds. People have played these games, and we don't take nicely to changes unless you have an absolutely FAN-FRIGGING-TASTIC reason for doing so. As far as I can see, that sign serves absolutely no purpose, except to say "hey - look at me! I'm a new sign. Aren't I cool", which opens you up to a LOT of criticism from people who'll say "it wasn't broken, why did you try to fix it?"

I don't want to be cynical, since I think a lot of other people are doing a fine job of that (;)), but if you DO make changes, Tanker, make sure they fit the style EXACTLY, and that you have a ground-breaking reason for them. Otherwise this will just be another fangame people will turn their backs on.

All the best...

What fan games do people turn their backs on? What games at all do people turn their backs on?

Anyway, what program are you using Tanker?

I think the biggest problem right now (apart from lighting n stuff) is the black outline around your edits. You should really remove it.
For the big sign, it almost looks like a message box :)

Then I'd try to add the shadow cast by the sign.
Although it's difficult to pinpoint the lightsource's location.
It looks like it's inside the hut, yet the inner roof is completely illuminated.
The lighting suggests the lightsource being on the doorstep...

The "project" is on hold, never mind i even started this topic.
