Cameo appearances in each others' games...yeah?

I just had the neatest idea. What if some AGSers used other AGSers' characters in their games in cameo appearances? (Besides RON games, cecause that's implicitly expected). I mean like regular games...  Like I could have some AGSers' characters in my game in a bar sceneas extras in cameo roles, and I could lend my characters to others for the same use. It could also be a form of advertising, scratching each others' backs and so forth. If it were done enough (not to the point of overkill), it could be interesting, no? What do you guys think?

I was just pondering this, and it could be interesting.

One problem, however, is differing styles. But, let's say my game is pre-rendered 3D (which it is), and John Doe's game is classic 2D painted style. I could have one of John's characters in my game and in my art style, and he could have one of mine in his own style. Eh?

yeh, that'd be a good idea, kinda like my idea of using actors instead of game characters, so like instead of using a character, you create actors and use them as the characters, i've always wanted to see that applied in commercial games, like the guy who plays Max Payne in Max Payne 2 could be in another different game as an entirely different character, i think it'd be kinda neat...

Boyd- neat idea, but not likely to happen too frequently.  First of all, most commerical game companies compete against each other so its not likely they would advertise other games' "actors".

Now the likelihood of a game developer using their game's actors in more than one series is hindered by the fact that those developers usually don't make many games in a given time.  For instance Rockstar (one of the most successful) has GTA, State of Emergency, Red Dead Revolver, and a few others.  Most developers are not that fortunate (or wealthy) to have that many series.

I was actually going to have cameo appearances by other AGS characters in a game I was making (Tom Mato's Grand Wing-Ding). The act with the cameos took place in the depths of a computer hard-drive, where all the characters from uninstalled games were forced to live. I actually got permission to use quite a few characters.
As you mentioned, Moebius, differing styles did prove to be something of a problem. It wasn't so much differing art styles as it was differing resolutions. It proved difficult to put characters from a 640x400 game into a 320x200 game. Of course, that whole project fell through anyway, so I never got around to solving those problems.
It still is an interesting concept. And I found that most game creators are rather co-operative about letting you use their charactors for cameos.

Layabout

Who framed Robert redford contained a whole section dedicated to a lovable character created by the Lord SCID.

And...

Rodekill had a traffic cop who beared an uncanny resemblance to Larry Vales.

So it's not a new idea. But it's still fun.

Captain Mostly

Both Rob Blanc and Richard Longhurst make cameo appearances in Larry Vales games.

Andail

I heard Tulle did a very prominent guest starring in Vegetable Patch Extreme Turbo

Captain Mostly

No, seriously! Rob blanc is in Larry Vales 1 (on the t-shirt of the side kick guy who's name I forget) and then in the second one, the same guy is wearing a Richard Longhurst t-shirt. I SWEAR it!

I remember because I said to Phil: "Hey! Can I book an ad slot on the t-shirt of that character in LV2?"

and he said "no"

So I had to... bribe him...

TerranRich

Yeah, I kinda wanted to have a few AGS characters (maybe Vales with Phil's permission, and others) in a bar/club scene in my game. AGSers at least would recognize some of them and it would be like an in-joke with all of us. :P

All I can think of whenever you mention cameos and bar scenes is the scene in the club from Snatcher (Sega/Mega CD version), where all the characters are from Konami games. Gillian makes a funny comment about being really annoyed that he couldn't jump off the stairs in Castlevania (Which is actually a bit of foreshadowing, if you've played through the game).

Don't forget, AQ2 demo had a cameo of Granny Zombiekiller, Pirate fry, and Dr. Ohio Mercurus.

A cameo is more funny when not expected...using them too much, would ruin their novelty.

Las Naranjas

My favourite cameo was the reappearence of a character from BASS in Broken Sword, especially since the character made perfect sense in context, so it didn't feel out of place, even though the two games are "worlds" apart.

Hey, Las, which character from BaSS was that?
