Advice needed on web hosting.

Hi guys, I know many people ask this sort of thing regularly, but I don't now much about web hosting / getting domain names and I could use a little advice.

I'm based in the UK and need a small amount of space, and three .co.uk domains. The idea is that each domain refers to different projects, but they all link to pages within one space.

What I'm uncertain about is how much that would cost (I hope cheap-ish) and how much bandwidth I'd need. To begin in with, the pages would be very simple, with a few small images. At a later date I might want to stream video, or allow people to download video/audio clips. I'm not certain what kind of options I'd need to allow that.

I really don't know anything about this sort of thing. I'd appreciate any information / suggestions you might be able to make.

I cannot give you names of companies, I don't know them.

I personally am with hostfolio.com, which at the time I got the hosting was a good deal and ver ydecent at their customer service.

You need to consider seriously how much badnwith you will 'waste'. I deal with mp3s, if you deal with video it will proably be larger than mp3s. Think about the future.

Now on the 3 domain names leading to one, I guess it could be done this way:
Register the 3 different names and the first two just have a link to the 3rd one. The 3rd will be the actuall site. Hope it makes sense.

But wait for the others to come and help further. I'm rather ignorant when it comes to these kind of things...

Ali

Thanks, Nikolas. I should clarify though, that the .co.uks shouldn't all lead to the same page. One of them would lead to a main index, but the others would lead to their own pages within the domain.

Nikolas

ok, then make the link to the first two pages, lead wherever you want them to lead. No problem... :)

Join the AGS server. Would be cheaper than any other option, if you wanted three separate domains but only one set of hosting costs.

You can easily get what you want using an .htaccess file, I run both yelloweyedstudio.com and eagma.org off the same server...

For instance the .htaccess file in the root of Yelloweyedstudio

Options +FollowSymLinks

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} eagma.org
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !eagma.org/
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ eagma.org/$1 [L]

Anyone that uses eagma.org as the url is automatically redirected to the eagma.org subfolder in the main webspace.

You can also get cheap domains with 123reg.co.uk, you could have an unlimited amount all pointing to the same server. And with unlimited bandwidtch and space, AGA's under £40pa deal is pretty damn good!

Ali

Thanks for the information guys,

Alynn, I appreciate that code, but it's way beyond my understanding!

m0ds, thanks for that link, I'll check it out!

AGA, please excuse my ignorance. What exactly is the AGS server, and how can I find out more about it?

Thanks again,

Ali.

ali, check http://americangirlscouts.org/ to see who and what our server is.
we are running a dedicated server for our domains and some other stuff, like irc and cs. i don't exactly know how much we charge for hosting, i think it's around 60 euros/year without and 65 with a domain. for that you get virtually unlimited space and no limits in downloads/uploads per month.
... it's quite easy being the best.

Could someone give me the exact price for joining the AGS server??

How does it work with control panels? do you get that when joining?

(sorry for "stealing" your topic Ali, but I needs a good place to host my website :P.)

but I guess you probably would be interested in knowing the exact prices aswell :P.

AGA

It's 60 Eur per year, or £40, or $75 US, with a domain. Subtract a bit if you want to handle your own domains. Add a bit if you pay via PayPal, since we incur charges for that.

This comes with all the stuff you'd expect from a professional host, FTP, databases, control panel and all. The bandwidth is unlimited, and although there is no set space limit, you'll get as much as you need, within reason (up to a few GB). Anything else you need to know?

All you really have to do is replace each instance of eagma.org with whatever your domains are in the first 2 lines... The last line of eagma.org you rename to whatever subfolder your other site sits in... for convienience I named the subfolder eagma.org...

dasjoe

..and hope mod_rewrite is on, and that the server is apache ;)

Well yeah there is that I thought I had mentioned that... but looking back... I realized I hadn't...  oops...
