Duke Nukem

Anybody remember Duke Nukem?  Those games were awesome.  I remember playing the shareware versions of the first and second one many, many years ago.

I recently got back into the game, and now own the full versions of Duke 1, 2, and Duke3D, which by the way, is a spectacular FPS, for its time.

Duke's over-the-top, egocentric character is totally hilarious, and makes the games fun to play, even in the most frustrating parts.

The cool thing is, you can actually buy a lot of these old games from 3DRealms.  Nice to see some companies haven't forgotten their classics.

Just wanted to see if anybody else ever played these games, and if they still do.  Hope this thread doesn't get locked by our lockaholic moderators.

I was more into the down-to-earth FPS's, but the only thing around like that was Wolfenstein. Duke Nukem was a bit too much for me. But, it set the bar for a lot of games after it. Still one of the great pioneers of gaming.

Those Hitler exoskeletons and zombies were pretty damn well down to earth.

Was Duke Nukem 3D the one that got all the bad media 'cos of the adult bookstores?

Not to mention the floppy tits with tassels.

Believe it or not, this was the first FPS I ever owned. I never did beat it.  :-[ I think I lost interest because the 2nd and 3rd missions were kind of repetitive, whereas the 1st mission had some really great levels. But I did play in some awesome deathmatches in college.

I actually loaded this onto my computer recently and used some OpenSource program to make it run in XP (I think it may also improve the graphics a bit). But after having played Unreal and Half-Life, I couldn't get back into it.

Anyone think Duke Nukem Forever will ever actually be finished?

Yeah, but the downside is you can't just grab them off an abandonware site.  :)

This might be interesting for some, I know I've put it to good use:

Duke3d was awesome, it was the last (and one of the only) FPS I ever liked. The reason I liked it so much is that it happened in real places (city settings) with real weapons (mostly) so you could identify with it. Unlike all those Quake and Unreal crap series where you go around in boring rooms that look like nothing. I also played many many ad-ons and mods, my favorite was Platoon, a total conversion in which you played a soldier doing missions in Vietnam, super super cool.
What about the sequel Duke4ever?  It has been in production for ever? 9 years already to be exact - since 1997. Are they ever gonna release it?   Probably. They said this month that the game is in its polishing stage. Christmas 2007 release maybe? I wish. 10 years developing game sure is A LOT, and expectations will be that big.
What about the movie?  again it's been talked about for years. Probably it won't be done, and I'm not sorry since movies about video games are always crap. But they might be interested in it again if duke4ever succeeds.

This game had a special place in my childhood memories.

I only played the time travelling PS2 version where it was third person. "A time to kill" was it called that? I could google it, but I don't care. Actually, maybe that was on PSone? It was so long ago I can't remember. (Nor be bothered to google it)

I did like that game a lot though! And that game got me into Stabbing Westward, who are ace.

veryweirdguy

Yeah, it was a PSone game called "A Time To Kill". There was another third person one called "Land Of The Babes" I think, but I never played it.

Time to Kill was pretty fun though, and I don't play many third person adventures (well, of that style, you know what I mean).

I played the original two platformers a lot as a child, they were great. My dad showed my 3D when it came out also, and I loved it, having only been used to Doom and wanting more by that time.

Everyone's given up hope on Forever though, right?

Land of the babes was ass.
Time to Kill rocked, and it got me into Stabbing Westward as well.

ManicMatt

Cool, got you into SW too!

I actually used google for this "land of the babes", and I think I did have that game, and it sucked so much that I can't even remember playing it.

I was looking at the fun made out of Duke Nukem forever:

"Gamers have subsituted Forever in place of several names, calling it Never, Whenever [19], If Ever [21], Taking Forever, and Neverever"

Well i got a new one! (New to me anyway) The initials are DNF: Did Not Finish!

I'm good.  8)

Gord, I totally forgot about that version....

And what I loved about the N64 version, and whichever similar version it was copied from, was that you could throw things through the portals in multiplayer. You can not do this in Halo and I hate it.  I would love to be able to throw grenades through the portals but it won't work, where as in DN you could throw the pipe bombs through and totally mess with people waiting for you to run in after someone.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

2ma2

I must say I have NEVER played the first two installments, and judge my Duke Nukem-fever solely on DN:3D. And I love it. From playing the Demo at a friends house to downloading it 7 years later of a warez site (yes I know.. boo me..).I never completed it though, but by golly I liked it. Ok, the pr0n is somewhat over the top, but in a young pubescent lad, that struck a chord. But it is the attitude that got me going. Duke is THE Duke and I would crave DN:F a hell-uva lot more than any Doom sequel.

ManicMatt

I remember a moment in Duke Nukem where he fights a boss and then threatens he's going to kill him and then piss on his corpse. And then he does. *Ziip!* *psssshhhh!* *Zip*

I laughed so much!

Nostradamus

Actually the exact thing is duke sayin "I'm gonna take your head off and shit down your neck", and then he takes his pants off and does just that.
That's obviously a Full Metal Jacket rip-off but it was a great moment.

2ma2 and any other others who didn't finish it: ever heard of cheats?

Raggit

Flukezy:  Yeah, it caught a lot of heat from feminist organizations because of the way it depicted women, not only in the adult bookstores, but in the other levels where aliens had captured them.  But there's no real nudity, that I ever encountered.

I downloaded the shareware version of Duke3d, and got hooked instantly.  I played through it in a couple days, and then bought the full version, new in box, off eBay.

If you buy the full version of Duke3d, it also includes the original two Duke Nukems on the disc.

Anybody ever played Duke Nukem: The Manhattan Project?   I have the demo, and can't decide whether or not I wanna buy it.
